Just lost a $300 knife with USPS...

I'm going to ask some people that live around my apartment. Unfortunately my immediate next door neighbor and I aren't exactly the best of buds. I can't really do much until Mon/Tues though, when USPS will review my claim.
Sorry man. I shipped and sold a $60 game and they lost it. I have yet to get my cash back. The shipping system is BS sometimes. hope you find the knife.

I always have to sign for my knives that are insured delivery. Are you sure you didn't get one of those pink cards that says they attempted delivery and you can pick up the knife at the PO on Monday?

That's just it. There was no slip, just delivery confirmation on both the tracking site and when I called them and gave the number, they confirmed that the package had the status of "Delivered"

If the guy accidentally tagged package as "delivered" he'd still leave a slip behind, wouldn't he? No slip was left. No slip and no package. No anything.

Since it is shown as delivered, USPS insurance will not cover the loss, as it doesnt cover theft of a delivered package.

So, was it insured or not?
I'd wait till Monday or Tuesday to panic, I've had several phantom deliveries that showed "delivered" two days before they were.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Losing a very expensive knife in the mail is one of my biggest fears. so far i have been blessed with good luck from the shipping gods. i'm dreading the day my luck runs out. now i have gone and gotten myself all nervous about the custom i have coming to me soon..... good luck and i hope you find it

This is what I think as well.

I'm hoping that it was a mistake on the deliveryman's side. I'm SoL if it wasn't.

Make sure he shipped it to the correct address. I've had packages marked delivered then discovered they went to the wrong address. I was able to recover one of them by going to the other address and speaking with a homeowner.

This probably isn't what happened but just to make sure.

I have had packages say delivered on the tracking before I receive them. Hopefully this is what is going on in your case, I feel your pain.

I just wanted to add the following.

I like many others in this thread have had tracking info say delivered when it actually hadn't been delivered. The package would usually show up a day or two later.

My USPS is pathetic in general. Then again UPS is pretty bad for me too. They delivered a suppressor and just left it on the front doorstep. USPS did the same thing earlier in the week. Its amazing to me the things that shipping companies will just leave unattended on your front doorstep.

I've tracked packages that were flagged as "delivered" before I received them and they've showed up the next day.

If your knife was stolen from the US Mail, it is a federal offense. Call the postal inspectors...they are better than the FBI.

I've heard stories of rifles, handguns, even thousands of rounds of ammunition being left on doorsteps... sometimes the wrong doorstep.

If the condo residents all use a community garbage dumpster I would make regular vists to that dumpster to see if the shipping box were there (if it were shipped in a box). If it is, and if the package was in fact adressed incorrectly, the label on the package may show that. At the very least, if you find the box you will know for certain that the package was in fact delivered and that someone stole it.

If you can find the packaging, I would put up notices around the condo with big bold letters that say "STOLEN PROPERTY", a title like that will grab attention. Then I would go on to explain that a USPS package was stolen from your doorstep, that you have recovered the empty packaging from the dumpster, and that if the property is not returned that you will file a theft report with the police and give them the package so they can retrieve fingerprints. Maybe this will scare the thief into annonymously returning the property, maybe not. I wouldn't say in the notice that it was a knife that was stolen, your nieghbors don't need to know what the property was, the thief will know.

I don't mean to be a jerk, but I don't see how this was the sellers fault. When a person buys something, it is either up to them to specify the shipping method and shipping details or, by not specifying, they are by default agreeing to leave those details up to the seller. Either way, the buyer is responsible for deciding how the package is shipped. And if the package is not shipped according to the buyers instructions, then the buyer has a justifiable grievance if something goes wrong.

If I recall correctly, shipping companies offer the option of picking up your package from their shipping office (to avoid situations like this). But you have to request this option. Also, you have the option of requiring a signiture for delivery, of course if the package is delivered to the wrong address than this offers little protection against theft. But the signature of the person who signed for the package would be on file.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Unfortunately this may prove to be a very expensive and painful learning experience.

Some options are ask each of the 20 families if they mistakenly taken it , describe the package , report it to the police , check every door of the house, see if USPS had someone sign for if , More then likely your local post office is holding it for you and you were given a reciet to pick it up. It will show up , same thing happened to me then 4 days later it showed up at the senders house, so he resent it via another currier

Is it still considered theft of mail if someone steals a package left on your doorstep? Would USPS investigate this as a criminal matter? This might get your neighbors to reconsider.

I always have packages delivered to my office, that way someone is always there to receive them.

Bake a tray of brownies infused with 24 Ex-Lax tablets. Put the brownies in a shipping box and set it in front of your door. When the package is stolen and you hear the toilet flushing all night, you'll know where your knife is.
