Just Ordered the Cara Cara

hvydrop,
You seem to think that $23 for a G-10 Cara Cara is a bit overpriced for a knife of this level of quality. What knives have you bought for $23 that were made with better materials? What knife for $23 was put together better? I am just curious because I would love to know where you can get knives better than the Cara Cara for less. It sounds like you really know where to shop and you really know your stuff.

The Cara Cara G10 is a great knife for the money. I bought it of curiosity and was pleased when I got it; it’s a lot of knife, fits god in my hand and it’s really sharp.

Its probably better than most of the knifes in that price range, and I wouldn’t be surprised if some more expansive knifes would be beaten in comparison.

If you don’t like knifes made outside USA, don’t buy them.

Well troops the Cara Cara arrived today. I promptly handed the package to my wife to wrap for my father's day present. You see when you are into weapons and such, it's best to do the buying for yourself. I will post pics of the new Cara Cara and the new Mini-Grip this weekend.

Regards,
Gary

hvydrop,
You are a lot of talk but don't back it up with any facts. Sounds like you just like to complain. I'm not sure what you expect from a $20 knife but I was impressed as hell with the G-10 Cara.

Well I opened up my Father's Day gift to myself and all I can say is I'm impressed! I can not believe this knife cost $19.95. The Cara Cara in G10 is one solid knife!

There is no noticeable blade play. It locks up rock solid. Lastly, it has the feel of much more expensive knife. I would recommend this knife to anyone looking for a medium size EDC knife who doesn't have $100.00 to spend.

Job well done Spyderco. I will just have to live with the fact that I put some money in their pocket....

"Here's a thought.....for the small amount you paid for it, I'm sure there are plenty of our men and women in harms way over in Iraq that would appreciate the performance of the Cara Cara."

Hmmm, here's a thought, accept the fact that people will not always agree w/ you. I'm a former Combat Infantryman [OEF], who is a disabled veteran and served in the US Army. I personally would not send a knife that I know is crap to any of my bubbas in the box.

The freedom of speech means the freedom to disagree, and the few that are harping on me because I've rightfully come to a different conculsion than you about this knife are nothing more then blowholes for this cheap product. Now I love Spyderco, so if they'll give me refund or exchange, that would be cool.

P.S. Let us not forget the men and women in harms way over in Afghanistan

Hi Hvydrop,

Thanx for your time in the service. Appreciated.

I might mention that we do send quite few byrds to the Middle East. Our troops do seem to like them.

Spare me sal, send me a free knife and I'll tell you I like it. But do you know the capcity in which these knives are used? Hmmm, I'd imagine [from my personal experience] their opening MRE's back at an AF. I sure as phuck wouldn't daisy chain that POS cara cara to my IBA or belt loop and start rolling out of a fire base.

Truthfully sal, I was starting to get into spyderco's again, just bought a native (good lil knife BTW) and was getting ready to buy another endura (one of my main EDC as a Paratrooper), but your lil indirect slap at me and the other general attitude of [most of] your brainwashed consumers has left me feeling sour. Maybe that's a sign that my money should go else where.

FYI, sal I'm sure you realize that from the my intial post, that I was never here to "Diss" this knife.

Damn son, you need to shop the market a little better. Can you list ANY other $20 knife that holds a candle to the byrd line? I sure as shit can't. Basically you're looking at Gerber folders and other generic brands (low grade buck, schrade and all the other off brands). But hey, to each their own. If you want to hate quality go for it.

You are one angry person. :D

Do recommend a $20 folder though that is of higher or equal quality with the Cara Cara. Please do cause I want to pick one up ASAP.

Did you ever try to send it in to Warrantee and Repair, like I mentioned earlier? They may send you off a replacement that lets you know why the rest of us are impressed by the Byrd line (including some troops, I'm sure). Also, you never answered what problems you were having with the blade performance. I am just curious if it was bad edge retention, burring, chipping, all of the above? It may have slipped out with a bad heat treat, who knows. Either way I think sending off the knife to W&R is at least worth a try if you got a bad apple.

Pearls to pigs.

Goes to show you how being a cordial, gentelmanly, corteous, respectfull, ethical poster at the forums (not to mention, moderator and biz owner) is al but lost on some.

hvydrop, could you share with us where has Sal made an 'indirect slap' at anyone besides you?

Do you think that among the thousands of posts he has, you will be able to find one?

Do you think that this is an honor that has being given to you?
Do you feel 'special'?

Just to clarify, the knives given away in our OIF/OEF programs are the US Made Tan Native. The byrd knives that Sal refers to are being purchased by men and women currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan (in addition to other locations). We do have some idea as to how the knives are used, we are lucky enough to receive correspondence from many of the men and women using our products (both Spyderco and byrd). We're very proud of how both lines have performed for those who need them the most.

hvydrop, thank you for your service. You and others in service are why we do what we do. We appreciate you.

My Dear Friends,

YOU'RE THE ONE COMPLAINING BECAUSE I WON'T JUMP IN ON YOUR F'N BANDWAGON!!! PULL YOUR HEAD FROM YOUR 4TH POC AND REALIZE THAT NOT EVERYONE HAS THE SAME FREAKING OPINION AS YOU!...<snipped>...but your lil indirect slap at me and the other general attitude of [most of] your brainwashed consumers has left me feeling sour. Maybe that's a sign that my money should go else where.

If someone has a problem with a Spyderco/Byrd knife, it should go back to Spyderco W&R. Period. Anyone not willing to put forth even that much effort is the source of a lot of their own problems. ;) Mistakes happen. Even in the instances of the best QC on the planet things slip through. I for one am willing to give any company a chance to make it right. I have sent a couple of knives to Spyderco over both major and minor issues; I have yet to be disappointed by their customer service.

Are we truly brainwashed consumers? Possibly. However, given the sterling way Spyderco, especially their W&R Department, has treated both myself and most everyone else I know I can understand a certain loyalty to them, can't you?

Given the vast majority of the ~$20 knives I see from time to time the Byrd line stands well above the rest of them for fit, finish and overall quality of components. I have the satisfaction of knowing I have a rock-solid warranty in the event that I do have an issue. I get all of this for about $20? The Byrd knives are an alternative line for the ELU not willing to spend even $40 on a knife, and I for one feel that they fill this niche admirably. I recently ordered a Byrd Cara Cara G-10 (I already possess several other Byrd knives as well) and will be very interested to see if there actually is a real issue with this knife as perceived on this thread. If this one knife is your only experience with the Byrd line I would encourage you to check out some of the others in the line and see if they are more to your tastes.

As far as your offhanded comment concerning a "slap" from Sal, get real. In my several years on forums he frequents I have never known of him to take a "slap" at anyone, no matter how deserving. :D I will also mention that in reference to your earlier post, YOU seem to be the only one present who refuses to agree to disagree politely without getting hot under the collar and resorting to name-calling, n'est-ce pas? :p

Speaking of byrd knifes, I just picked up 2 PE meadowlark. It reminds me of the very first spyderco I got (ladybug) when I was like 14-15. Fun little guys, one for my gf, and one for my mom.

Seeing this thread got me curious about Byrd knives. I got a couple, was impressed and just orderd a bunch more last night (a combination of Cara Caras, Meadowlarks and Robins). I'll keep some for myself and give some to friends as gifts.

Kudos to Sal for the great knives and manners.

Keep up the good work .

Hi Hvydrop,

No offense intended. Sorry it was taken that way.

I don't think that you came here to "Diss" the model. I do think that your analysis was a bit surprizing.

Whatever standards you are personally using to judge the byrds are yours, and I can accept your opinion.

We feel that we have set a new standard with the quality / price of our byrd brand.

As you mentioned, we can respectfully disagree.

I hope there are other Spyderco models that will please you.
