just received poor example of custom 110

The fact is in every instance someone at Buck didn't do their job and they knew it when they didn't do it.

I have to completely agree with this.
As a GC I see to many people do not take pride in their work anymore (I didn't say no one does). They think they are paid to show up, or go thru the steps doesn't matter how it got done as long as it's done and half the time if they did it right they think they deserve a bonus. No! That's what you were paid to do. If someone goes above and beyond then yes they deserve more.

While I do hope these are few and far between at Buck it is happening and it shouldn't. I have experienced it more than once.
On a standard production knife and their customized one's I do think it is nit picking if the blade isn't centered, or the grind isn't perfect, excess compound, etc. I wouldn't consider these warranty issues.
But the most of what the op and Haebi described never should've left that way! For that matter it shouldn't even gotten as far as a QC inspector! Fortunately regardless of whether or not it should've happened or not, Buck will not bail on you, and I have seen, more than once, them warranty when it shouldn't have been warranted.
Everyone makes mistakes and I'm fine with that, I have screwed things up pretty good myself, but there is a difference between carelessness and mistakes.

FYI the only knives I buy to collect are Bucks, so obviously they are my favorite.

aint that the truth.

i have to babysit employees often to make sure they do better than average. is what it is........

Not one of you really knows what happens in the Buck factory and what type of quality systems they use. Good quality systems are business secrets and won't be discussed on an open forum.

"The fact is in every instance someone at Buck didn't do their job and they knew it when they didn't do it."

I doubt that every person who produced the subject knife "didn't do their job and knew it..." Lots of times people get distracted and don't know they didn't do their job. Sometimes the person before them didn't do their job, but the person after doesn't know this. Sometimes they do their job but the inspection tool is out of calibration. Remember product inspection catches failures, but the goal is Total Quality so there are no failures to catch.

The only thing you can say for sure is that Management is responsible for quality.

Well........I was just thinking.......

This would be the perfect time to order a custom 110.

You can be sure there's been some chewing of rear ends and everybody will be on their toes.

:)

Is it true the custom shop won't engrave profanities? I hope it's a bluff

Yes, it's clearly stated on their website. "Profanity, inappropriate wording, Trademarked material, images and symbols will not be accepted or processed". Probably a smart move.

' Is it true the custom shop won't engrave profanities? I hope it's a bluff '

^^ Good for Buck!!! ^^

You're not pickin' up what I'm puttin' down. It really doesn't matter if Buck won't do it there is always, especially engraving, somebody that WILL do it.

Well, they don't do engraving, as such, they just give you an option to have a few words on your knife.

And who would want profanity on their knife anyway???

And.......I wonder if offering real engraving might be profitable and sell more knives?

Food for thought, Buck.

Now we are really off message, this thread needs to die.
Have a new beef? Start your own new thread.... :o

The line is drawn...

It was a weird thread from the start......the OP never came back to show pictures of his alleged problem.

:)

But I did. I showed pictures. And I couldn't believe what I got to read. At least there was a knife from the Buck custom shop, that was not worth the shipping to Germany, and there's a second knife, made after the first was sent back, that is a lot better than the first, but not as good as the standard production knife. And the third point: the shipping was so high that it was enough for a share of USPS. It is a bad situation for me because I don't know what to do. I bought the knife for a friend and sent him the second one yesterday. If he doesn't accept the knife, I have to take the full cost of nearly 280 USD for a simple buffalo scaled S30V Buck 501 just because I did somebody a favor and Buck was not able to make an acceptable knife.

probably pay itself off in less than a year.

I think it is better to write it off. I paid dearly for the knife. Let's get back to business as usual. See you next year at the BCCI anniversary meeting. Let's close this unpleasant affaire ---- and the thread.
