Just saw Bear use his knife on tv....

Bear gets run down a lot, but isn't it good for all us knife nuts, that somebody on TV uses his knife as a tool without all the weapon stigma? We would collectively be worse off without him.

Just sayin'....

I doubt he makes millions either via Gerber. I am no knife maker, but some of the custom guys do make considerable money with royalties from knives made by CRKT and others. The more knives they make from your patterns, typically the more you make. So how much? I was told by one of the Graham Brothers (The Razel's) that they make about a new pickup a year in royalties a year of so ago, but some do much better. Since then, CRKT has added more of their knives. I would assume they do a bit better now.

Yep, buy that. Bu they (and I love their work) are not carrynig the name recognition of Bear, and don't have a popular tv show. Plus, Gerber is a bigger name than CRKT (I love both of them too).

And laughs at all the goobs laughing at him.... all the way to the bank. Can you do that?

Doesn't make what he does in the show less stupid. :p

They may both be geniuses and millionaires in real life but I'm talking about the content of their shows. I guess you'd do what bear and Mr. Bean do in the same situations huh? Just because they're laughing at the audience all the way to the bank, huh? Nice role models, huh?

BTW, I don't watch those shows so I'm probably not one of the goobs he's laughing at. ;)

I think crkt is bigger now than gerber. they were good back in the day but in my opinion all the gerbers ive picked up (multitools, knives) they were all pretty crappy and i was not happy with them. I did like me gerber shard but that was replaced with a leather man squirt. Its got scissors. and i think that jimh0220 might be a famous sombody who has a pretty entertaining show on tv. but i havent watched man vs wild since the episode where he was ice fishing then ate the fish alive. I did see parts of the one with Will Farrell.

Really? You look for roll models by watching tv? THAT is funny. I like the show Bear does, because, in spite of the of the staged antics, there is some interesting stuff there too (IMO). I was not ever saying there is a brilliant show there (Bean is brilliant, just not my type of humor). I just commented that he was smart for using his own product on his show.

I find my role models in better places (like here!). You keep on looking.

Look @ my sig. I did kill Kenny, ya' know. :) I'd be interested to see which co. is actually larger. Since Fiskars bought GerberI suspect it's them, but that's just a guess.

BTW, actually I am Les Stroud. Or maybe Cody Lundin. Not sure which yet. Also, they both have drunk their own pee too fyi.

I used to like Bear's show but as time went on it got sillier and sillier. Initially, I found the show to be interesting and informative, but as it progressed he started doing "stunts" and foolish things. For me it ceased to be an informative survival show and morphed into Jackass. Apparently, this change garnered higher ratings for Bear, but for me, it made his show unwatchable.

Bear has the skills, but his style isn't for everyone. For me, I can't watch 10 minutes of him but I can watch Dave and Cody for an hour. That hippie is definitely a fire god.

To me...they are all acceptable edu-tainment. Some of them I like more than others, just like I like, say, Pawn Stars more than American Pickers. They are just shows.

That said...if any of these "survival" shows actually talked about how to go outside and NOT get into these "survival" situations, rather than how to save yourself from being an ill-prepared goofball....then you got a show, in my book.

oh yeah, and he has a tv show that has to be making him millions too. And a contract with Gerber making him millions. And you can survive drinking your own pee. Any of you aholes have the cajones to do that on national tv. BTW, did I mention he makes milliions? You guys are suckers who don't get it. He gets it.

i'm with you...i like his show; even if some of the situations are staged to illustrate the point, he does the work and the "stunts"; he walks the walk AND drinks the pee...and i like his cloths (love the shirts, got plenty of them)...but not the seal carcass shirt, that i got to pass on...

oh yeah, that is a great show too; what a pair up...barefoot hippie guy makes the show really funny sometimes...his feet must hard as a rock and splayed out bigtime

Provide proof of this. If you're talking about the solar stills they've done then you don't know anythig about physics. Bear is an adrenaline junky who has turned his sport into money. Is it brains or dumb luck? I'm thinking dumb luck. Is he stupid, I don't think so but he's no whiz either. If making money is proof of brains then you'd have to lump in all reality tv personalities. Most of whom are dumber then door knobs.

les stroud drank his own pee once. but he distilled it in a solar still and he had been in the dessert for like 5 days. i think les stroud is my favorite. and i guess bc friskers bought gerber is why i dont like them anymore haha. tho crkt and gerber are a more accessible knife brand and there materials and price points reflect that. the only crkt knife i didnt buy to destroy was my k.i.s.s. ineffective as a knife (too thickblade!) but really good money clip and it looks fancy

Agreed 100%, I just do not believe the average person would sit through that kind of show however. I think that it is Bear's stunts and shenanigans are what make his show so popular.

It's kind of like Mythbusters, it actually used to be about busting actual myths and inquiries of pop culture, now its 'lets see if this scene in a movie is possible' or ' lets see the closest distance a sniper can be to where you could dodge his bullet'. It's for ratings, its what the masses want. I still watch it every once in a while but it's not the same.

All in all, a show like that wouldn't survive sadly...Not too many people (not provable data, just ignorant assumtion at this point based on social observation) want the information when they turn on the television, they want action and excitement.

sorry if I ranted a little :p
I'm not trying to be an a-hole

his stunts and recklessness make the show, i view his show for what it is, mostly entertainment. i was watching bear this weekend with a friend and i said that in a real survival situation you wouldn't do most of what you see on bear's show, he takes too many unnecessary risks. if i want to see and learn proper survival techniques, i pop in a ron hood dvd.

That's called drinking water not pee.

Kind of like when Cody used that can to convert the saltwater to drinkable water, right? I cannot come up with the correct terminology here for what he did...Can you help me out here Shotgun?
