Just saw Bear use his knife on tv....

his stunts and recklessness make the show, i view his show for what it is, mostly entertainment. i was watching bear this weekend with a friend and i said that in a real survival situation you wouldn't do most of what you see on bear's show, he takes too many unnecessary risks. if i want to see and learn proper survival techniques, i pop in a ron hood dvd.

Amen brother

Agreed 100%, I just do not believe the average person would sit through that kind of show however. I think that it is Bear's stunts and shenanigans are what make his show so popular.
...

All in all, a show like that wouldn't survive sadly...Not too many people (not provable data, just ignorant assumtion at this point based on social observation) want the information when they turn on the television, they want action and excitement.

sorry if I ranted a little :p
I'm not trying to be an a-hole

Not at all on the "rant/a-hole" thing! In fact, I agree with you entirely. The shows are about entertainment. And they are entertaining...I find some more entertaining than others. I enjoy Dual Survival thoroughly....I love to see hijinks those two are going to get into next.

And more power to all these guys....take the money when you can, I say! Good for them! They have created a booming business the knife industry hasn't seen since the Rambo knife days. It's good for everybody.

Well...maybe not "good" for internet knife discussion forums...if I see another "I want a survival knife" thread, my head may explode! :D

That's called drinking water not pee.

:D When did one's level of outdoor expertise become measured by ones ability to distill pee into potable water? :)

Seems like an expert wouldn't have to distill their own pee in a survival situation! They wouldn't get in one in the first place.

But like DeadFall said...that's not much of a show....Cody and Dave sit in front of a tent drinking beer and eating salami and cheese. Checking in with the wife and kids on their iPhones. Checking their email.....

I'm the complete opposite of some of you guys.... I can't stand the two dudes in "Dual Survival", especially the hippy guy who won't shut up about converting his friend to being a long haired no shoe wearing hippy.

Well said! I am very honestly jealous that these individuals can make their living doing what they do.

(I love combing through the survival knife threads occasionally though, they are hilariously repetitive.)

I actually enjoy Dual Survival the most because it reminds me of myself and a friend of mine :D:D It was a very cunning move to place such polar opposites together for a survival show. They balance each other out very well IMO. I can't wait for a new episode.

The problem I have and I think most people have is that it's presented under the guise of teaching the watcher survival skills. Although he does some good survival techniques, they're peppered in with dumb and downright dangerous things. If it was just a guy running through the forest it would be a fun show. The problem is that the idiocy is presented as a how to. I'm waiting for the first lawsuit from the parents of a kid who dies trying to rock climb a waterfall because Bear told him it was a better idea then just walking around.

I like all of the shows. They all offer something a little different wether it's heavy on information (les stroud) or entertainment (bear). I've been kind of partial to dual survival lately since you can see the two guys play off of each others knowledge and skills. Mr. Bean is great too...he used to crack me up as a kid.

Now if we can get Mr. Bean to go on an adventure with Bear and have them drink each others pee....thats good fun for everyone!!

Agreed, Shotgun. I think Grylls is in a slightly different category than the other "survival" shows in that he seeks out the "extreme" technique (like climbing down the ice waterfall)....where the other shows avoid the "extreme" technique. I like it less than the other shows exactly for that reason.

But...more power to him too. And to Myke Hawke too....he's provided me with endless entertainment as I repeat his name to myself and giggle.

heh, heh..."Myke Hawke"....snort

What were we talking about?

And I prefer Cody because A) He seems to be the most knowledgeable one out of all of them B) He has my sense of "gallows" humor and C) I'm a minimalist hippy type too. Though you'd never know it by the way I act. ;)

When I first saw him on Bizarre Foods and they said his name I thought they were joking. Then he started talking with that exaggerated low voice and then I knew it was a joke. Bwahahaha!!!:D

That's, hands down, the single most worthwhile and intelligent post I have ever read in a "Survival Show" thread.

You, my friend, are awesome.

I don't think there is anything else to be said on the subject! Stick a fork in it...it's done!

Get it??:D
Too far??

Kind of like when Cody used that can to convert the saltwater to drinkable water, right? I cannot come up with the correct terminology here for what he did...Can you help me out here Shotgun?

Just regular old distillation. But turning salt water into potable water is called desalination.

I'd bet the camera man has 4 or 5 extra Bear Blades in his pack. Break one, no problem.

...if any of these "survival" shows actually talked about how to go outside and NOT get into these "survival" situations, rather than how to save yourself from being an ill-prepared goofball....then you got a show, in my book.

I totally agree. They should teach about basic things you can carry which would help in a survival situation. Then maybe they could contrast two scenarios where one guy is prepared and another has to improvise.

You mean like the kids that got killed by laying out in the middle of the road and trying to dodge cars? Like what was show in the movie "The Program"? It's sad that you can get sued for other peoples stupidity....
