Just saw Bear use his knife on tv....

bear is probably an excellent survivalist and if he was really lost in the wilderness i doubt he would be squeezing elephant crap and running around like a chimp on meth. most people tune in to see his antics and that's what pays his bills

Exactly. If anyone here were in a survival situation, they would be lucky to have Bear by their side. His show is his JOB. He does it to make a living for himself and his family. There's no point in bashing the guy for that. It's a he'll of a lot more interesting and fun than my job.

Agreed.

You've got to realize though that some of the stunts he pulls he does for the ratings and $$. I don't know if anyone saw the episode where he stripped his clothes off and ran around in freezing temperature. Comon.

Why he show is still on is simply because it is entertaining and somewhat informative. People aren't going listen (let alone remember) to his advice; but they will watch him. There are better sources to learn survival information than Bear; but he is certainly qualified. Not to mention that the camera work and scenery is fantastic. You don't see picture quality like that with Les Stroud.

Got to admit thought, guys got some stones.

that's because les is alone filming and surviving ;)

i probably wouldn't/couldn't do half the stuff bear does on TV.

dear lord I hate them. The one where he lit his arm on fire to stop the bleeding = worst idea ever! These people are going to get idiots killed. Granted, I am all for idiots dying because they are stupid but I just don't want them dying in the woods where I hike and bike and hunt. Let them die on escalators at the mall where we can clean it up easily with bleach.

The only way to stop any adrenaline junkie is to rip their nuts off lol.

All jokes and puns aside, what does everybody think about the usefulness of the Grylls ultimate survival fixed blade knife?

I think for the average city dweller who gets outdoors every once in a while, knows nothing about knives and wants a 'survival knife' for their trips its a pretty ok piece IMO. I may get some heat for that but I don't care. I mean, I know people who think Gerber makes the greatest knives on earth and nothing can beat them. It catches the eye when your walking around the knife isle, its big, has some pretty nifty items (Fire-steel, whistle, diamond stone) for the ill-experienced, and it's put out by Bear Grylls! It's the guy on the tv we all love to watch, we all want to be him right?

For us knife-nuts, its a gimmick and a cheap piece of work (ignorant assumption for we as a culture I cannot speak for us us knife-nuts). We can get some better blades for that kind of money. For the ill experienced and those who aren't outdoors alot, its a 'big' knife that can do what they ask it to.

That said, its good for the general public and their kids wanting to be the next Bear Grylls. That's my .02

I've not done much with the fixed blade yet, but I have used the USK sheath folder for a couple of months now, and as much as it even surprised me, I kinda like it.

I used it to clear out an overgrown landscaped area, hacking a bunch of small maple saplings and some vines and the blade finish got scratched up, but the lockup is still rock solid and it sharpened back up fairly easy.

A buddy of mine actually picked up the scout and is in love with his.
