Specs say 8cr13, unfortunately my friend wants something with a lock as well. Thanks for the heads up though, its been added to my Christmas list!

Just got a Swabbie. What a beastie slab of steel. Gotta get out and destroy something NOW.

will have to be of the swabbie only, it's raining outside....gotta forage for stuff that can be safely destroyed indoors :D

The Swabbie is so much fun, Zulu! In fact, "Swabbie" has turned into a verb synonymous with "to destroy."

For example, "I swabbied the **** out of some bamboo."

well, I swabbied one empty pill bottle, 2 bottles filled with water and some vegetation when the rain stopped...fun indeed!

talking about these awesome blades and seeing how the Johnson line has gotten bigger in my collection (potbelly, war sword, swabbie and parangatang), where can I get some black scales? I really like an all-black look.

The JAB Potbelly is a real interesting knife. I like it a lot. Hopefully I'll be able to add one to the stable soon. And the Parangatang? That's a fun blade as well. It just sings through material.

I just got my first Ka-Bar and I thought this would be a good place to say "hello." Been lurking here and an occasional poster. Longtime knife lover but only recently turned it into sort of a hobby.

A friend recently retired from the US Air Force and he still goes to "The Base" to pick up certain things like meats and smokes and alcohol and stuff. I asked him to keep an eye out for a good price on a leather handled full-size, FU knife. That was about 6 months ago. He called me last Saturday and told me he picked one up for me. Yes, I could have gotten one on Amazon or something but I really appreciated getting it from someone who actually served and who got it on a military base. I know it's corny but I really appreciate the tradition this knife represents.

As to the knife. The serrated, Full-Size, Army, FU knife. Love the leather handle and even the sheath. Just feels great in the hand. It will replace my Buck 119 as my camp, day-hike, do everything fixed blade for a while. While I appreciate it's place in history, the knife will be a user, not something to keep hidden away as a trophy of some sort. I look forward to putting it through it's paces and to spending some time on this forum.

Take care all!

Thanks for stopping in. Glad to hear you are liking the knife. Little known KA-BAR fact: the reason KA-BAR doesn't make a US Air Force version of the Fighting/Utility knife is the result of an Air Force policy that forbids the use of the Air Force name or insignia on any weapon. KA-BAR did make an Air Force version for approximately one year but was informed it was a no fly zone. And now you know the rest of the story. Look forward to chatting with you. Thanks again.

Does that apply to the USCG version as well? The USCG version seemed to disappear just as quickly.

KA-BAR 1217 spotted. I was watching Black Hawk Down on Netflix and noticed a 1217 within the first 5 minutes. One of the pilots had it strapped to the front of his flight vest.

It does not apply to the USCG version. That one was a casualty of non-existent sales. Unfortunately when you are in the business of mass production you need sales to keep the machines running and there was never enough interest in the market to support a USCG model. That being said, if you can find one out on the 'net I would recommend picking it up. They have found a niche in the secondary market.
