I would say it all depends on how much you watch TV and the size of the room you watch it in / how far away you sit. If you find yourself watching movies alot, and you have HD cable; then you will want the better quality higher resolution. Why skimp out on the TV why you are paying for the services? If you JUST watch basic cable and rarely watch movies I'd go for the lower resolution as it doesn't make too much of a difference.
And it does make a differenceregular TV at 720p feels like watching TV. HD channels on 1080p feels like you are looking through a window.
