Hey Dunk. I think tomorrow's forecast is for 103F all the way up here in Bell County, about 50 miles north of CS.

My Saturday schedule consists of "light work" - constructing a couple of windows, loading up and hauling a couple of front-end loader loads of rocks and busted bricks don to a wash spot in the pasture, stack some more 8x8x16 concrete blocks into shapes resembling raised garden beds, and bolt a dozen or so 2x8s to my knife/tomahawk throwing backstop. Hopefully I'll get that done before noon when it gets too hot to work in the sun. The afternoon will be less strenuous - a little laser etching on some Norse Hawk heads, sand (and maybe stain) the handles for aforementioned hawks.

Sunday, after church, I'll probably put the first coat of paint on the backstop.

It's gonna be too dang hot to replace pasture fences, work on tearing down 3 old barns, cutting down hackberries in the pasture or filling the new raised beds with dirt, mulch and sand. All of which are on my "Perpetual To-Do List"

Missed this earlier.

We're only supposed to be 102 tomorrow. 103 Sunday. And 104 Monday. It's like winter in Minnesota - except in complete reverse.

I should probably take pics as I go along.....

Please do. I'd be interested to see them.

And I'd bet wearing both would be like trying to wear old-style "knights of the Round Table" style plate armor.

This would be pic worthy as well. :)

Same here, except our forecast is 1 degree higher than y'all's each day, e.g., 104 Sunday, 105 Monday with MAYBE a chance of rain Thursday or Friday. Maybe a snowball's chance in hell of rain, but a chance. :D

I think they make combination vests. I don't have to worry too much about getting stabbed, there isn't much opportunity for that.

Is it true that Kevlar won't stop a knife? I've heard the fabric can't handle the point of a knife while the width of a bullet keeps it from penetrating - even if you still get the full energy transfer.

Truth. Kevlar is slash resistant but not stab resistant as a stand-alone product. In fact, the freshly woven panels are melt-cut using a heated shear.

My body armor [with plates] will stop a .30-06 AP round and anything that is pointy or edged - but only if it's hit in the plate. For stab resistant, you need something like these:

Not much opportunity for getting stabbed is good. The closest to being stabbed that I've been was when I managed to run a 12" garden spike through the bottom of my tennis shoe, all the way through my foot and out the top of my shoe.

It hurt a little bit.

Some chance is better than no chance. Unless it makes it 105 and 100% humidity - which just sounds horrible.

Absorbing the force of a .30-06 sounds horrible as well. I don't even like it when it's spread against a whole butt-stock - much less concentrated in just the size of the bullet itself.

And yet more horrible-ness.

Smiles and rainbows and ponies anyone? Anyone?

For rifle rounds, steels plates are probably the way to go. Heavy, but they spread the impact out and can take a few hits even though I think they aren't rated to. Ceramics will stop the first round but they shatter so a second round will got through. Then there was that dragon skin stuff. I haven't really studied much on the subject in a while other than guys on youtube shooting stuff out of curiosity. I just wear what they give me.

When I used to do some stuff we had two different vests depending on where we were and what we were doing. Regular Kevlar level 2's with lbv and gear (weighed 30lbs), and a full plated (front back and sides) level 3 with lbv and gear (weighed 55+ depending on gear).

Washing the carriers was always a pain :( glad I dont have to do that anymore :D getting the Kevlar out is easy, stuffing it back in is a pain.

On our kevlars we used a thin piece of sheet metal as stab plates. Only problem with those vests is the stab plates only covered the heart. But like Hoss; there was little to no threat of a stabbing.

Even if you do get stabbed or shot, they pretty much have to get you right in the heart or brain for it to be fatal, so long as you get quick medical response. It would suck tremendously to have that happen but the odds are very very high that you'll live. I read somewhere that in the US 95% of gunshot wounds are survived and I believe stabbings are about the same. I read about a prison guard that got stabbed 44 times and lived to make a full recovery.

But nobody ever gets close enough to try it anyway. Most of the time when I'm interacting with people they're in their car coming through a gate so it would be difficult to open the door and jump out with a knife before I could back up and put something between us while drawing my weapon. Meanwhile there's at least one other guy there covering my back for just such an occasion so if nothing else my death will be avenged. Much more effective to just shoot me, which also won't end well.

Id rather not find out haha!

Like our marriage vs. Single debate. I sometimes miss the others side, but now take comfort that my chances of getting shot are alot lower lol

My odds of taking a bullet didn't used to be all that high. But with all the wanna be terrorist types randomly trying to kill anyone in a uniform, ya never know.

I found a big-ass anchor the other day. I may have to enter my own contest! :D

Sounds fair to me

There ain't any round here :( I found one that is about an hour away from me, but I'd find larger if I hung around Lake Ontario for a while.

I may have to post a big ass ka-bar with a tiny anchor... Just to stick it to the man.

I am sad - oddly enough, there are no large, metal anchors to be found in the middle of the continent.

Make it about scale. Find some tiny props to surround a small anchor with and set the knife so it looks like a perspective shot.

Aren't tent pegs, "anchors"?

Or, try to find some old retired landlocked sailor, start getting him talking bout the good ole days, and take a pic of his arm. You can't talk about that sort of thing without seeing an anchor. :D

Well, going back to Dunk's Q about weekend plans, well, you know the old saying about mice/men/plans. :(

I got 1 of 3 windows assembled before my brad nailer blew a seal and is down for the count.

Went to load up the pile of busted bricks, concrete blocks and rocks for dumping into a pasture wash to reduce erosion and found that the battery has a dead cell. Need a new battery.

Went to attach 2x8s to my knife throwing backstop and the chuck on Dewalt cordless drill locked up and I can't change bits, so rather than having 1 drill set up to drill pilot holes and the other to drive screws, had to keep changing bits back and forth, so I didn't finish that project. (I was temp holding boards up with screws and following up with lag screws for primary hold).

Was using a ratchet wrench to drive in 4" lag screws and the guts of the ratchet went flying all over the yard.

The only projects I had scheduled for the day that ended up accomplished was watering my watermelons/blackberries and grilling 2 NY strip steaks for supper.

What's an ass anchor?

Dang Z, can't you do anything right? :D
