Would fit nicely in my western's :D The problem would be seating it to make it comfortable :D
 
Quick question: What companion knife goes in the little sheath on the BK9 sheath? It bothers me a little that I now have to buy another knife to go with this knife! ;)

The BK13 Remora...now in the same 1095CV as your BK9, but is clear coated. Depending on the vendor, you may get the 440 stainless version that might still be floating around.

It's a great little Blade and that sheath is made specifically to fit the Remora.

Awesome. I saw it on Amazon and ordered it. I noticed it has holes like maybe someone makes scales for it. I suppose you could make your own as well. Are you/did you put anything on it? Thanks.

It sits pretty deep in the BK9 sheath. I don't think it'll fit in there with any scales or a wrap on it.

Time to vent: mega busy week at work. Not gonna bore you with details but it's insane.
I get home, late. Recorderd the new ep of the walking dead yesterday. For some reason the cable provider royally f*cked up in the programming, so it only recorded the first ten minutes. Oh well, download time, I thought. So I'm ten minutes from the end. Adrenalinerush, super exciting... Laptop crashes. Fml. Reboot, safe mode, all that good stuff. It starts updating windows!!! 20 minutes into the update, still nothing. Totally out of the experience now, it's late, gotta get up early... Some sh*t is gonna fly through the room real soon.
 
aw, that sucks man. I do all my watching late at night, so I know what it's like to have the internet screw up and force you to go to bed unfulfilled. Stay strong, it's just one day.
 
Hello fellow KA-BAR owners, I just received my BK9 yesterday and would appreciate some feedback on getting the best use from this wonderful knife without wasting a lot of money and time running down blind allies. I had done a good bit of reading on the BK9, its sheath, stripping the protective coating, inducing a patina finish (how long does this last, does it need to be redone periodically), new scales etc. Upon receiving the knife and sheath I am extremely impressed with the product, it speaks of quality.

First, does the knife need to have the protective coating removed? I like the appearance as it is but I have seen in various videos that the knife really starts to look beat up after awhile with the factory coating. Is there a way of maintaining the original appearance or restoring periodically. I know there are coatings (ie Duracoat etc) which I am sure can be made to look attractive after the factory coating is stripped, but I imagine that it needs maintenance to retain their appearance. If the coating situation is a never ending touch-up situation I would vote for stripping and adding a patina. Is this what most people who have the BK9 do?

The sheath seems to get a lot of criticism. In looking at it it looks like it could be easily modified by adding some additional grommets along the sides or some Ranger bands to make it more functional, or better clip closures. My sheath holds the knife firmly and there is no rattling noise. Has anyone modified the sheath along the lines that I suggested and how has the sheath held up? Some of the sheath solutions are twice as expensive as the knife which doesn't seem to make sense, although they do look quite attractive; however, this is not a beauty contest.

The scales on the standard BK9 look good although they are quite smooth and would impact gripping, which can be addressed with a Ranger band. What is the benefit of the micarta scales, or is this more a dress up of the knife.

If one does strip the factory coating and puts a patina on the blade, how long does this last and what up keep is necessary?

Last but not least, what other suggestions do you have that would add to the enjoyment and usefulness of the BK9?

Take it out just like it is and process some wood. The BK9 works very well in stock form yes people including myself have done mods. But USE it first then decide what if anything you need to tweak.
