Some KA-BARs given to me by my grandfathers. The one on the left we found one day in the woods while hunting, you'll have to excuse the 'sheath'. ;)

I got a new Ka-Bar! :)

Kabar #1217 Combat Utility; I stripped the finish when it got to the point that it was wearing through to the steel underneath. It doesn't show up in the pics, but the blade has a nice unusual two-tone appearance, and the buttcap has a plum-bronze look. The blade and leather handle were lightly scrubbed with 00 steel wool, then the leather washers were sealed with beeswax.

On the sheath, I radiused the edges, brushed the rough side with a stiff brush, then scrubbed it down with saddle soap. After I let it dry, I spent a half-hour hand buffing every surface I could get to with an old cotton diaper.

The overall result is a cool retro look. I'm going to leave this one as is.

Here's what it looked like before, when the finish was a little more intact and the sheath was still somewhat dried out (The KBD1 is stil a work-in-progress):

Here's a picture of most of my Kabar Mk2s (or equivalents), or as I put it, my Kabar Kabars, since some people insist on calling any any knife resembling a 1219C2 a Kabar, regardless of when if was made or by which manufacturer. :D I said "most" because I just remembered that I have a couple of 1217-USMC/1219-USA stamped reproduction versions at my mother's house and 1 each 1281/1282 D2 versions out in the shop.

All Kabar Mk2s.jpg

The left column is all post-reintroduction versions, ranging from the NIB 1970s version (still in it's box) down through a 5017 (1217 in Kydex), 1211, 3 1221s with all 3 sheath variations that I have found (I really like the NextGens - the 2 with dirty handles and Kydex are my bad weather users), then 3 reproductions from the 80s, 90s and 2ks. The last 2 are my day-to-day dry weather farm users.

The other 2 columns are all WW2 versions. The sheaths are the ones that came with the particular knife adjacent to it (all are period correct except for the top right -a guard marked version that came with a non-issue, hand-made sheath). I only have documentation for 3 of them as to who the WW2 veteran was who carried them in WW2 and/or Korea.
