KA-BAR Tech Talk

I think this question is technical enough to be posted here. If not please move it to a more appropriate sub-forum.

I’m wondering if KA-BAR has any of their old pattern drawings stored away. I’m specifically interested in the early drawings that apply to the 1217 pattern knives and am interested in the changes that took place during the WW2 production period.
I’m confident that many members of this forum would find any of these historical documents very interesting.

This has probably been asked already but I'll post three questions anyway:

1. When can we expect the release of the new BK-10?

2. What is the MSRP of the new BK-10?

3. Cerakote: Has there ever been an issue with a change of temper, or outright failure, of 1095 CroVan (like in the Beckers) as a result of baking on Cerakote?

sac troop,

Yes, we do. The earliest drawing we have of the F/U knife is Nov, 1943. We also have a Apr, 1944 drawing. I'll talk to the Pres. to see if it's okay to post. If that's a go I'll get Official KA_BAR to post them.

Tdhurl,

The BK-10 is scheduled for April 2013 release. We are fine tuning the sheath right now. The MSRP is $121.45 but you should be able to find it for alot less if you search around.
I've never used any of the Cerakote products but according to their application sheets, the curing temp is either air cure or a 300Deg F bake depending on the product. We temper in the 450-475 Deg F range so you should be good to go if you decide to use Cerakote.

Hope this helps.

Toooj, what's your favorite ice cream and how do you like your steak cooked?

Moose,

Nilla, so I can put all sorts of liqueur on it, med rare. What kind and grade of beef and the wine are more important than doneness as long as its not raw or burnt. Right now I'm very partial to Nebraska Star Waygu from Steve Johnson. Its as close to Kobe as I'll be able to get in the U.S.

Missed you at SHOT. However it was fun to actually see Ethan work.

I have an old USMC Kabar that has worn out leather rings, is there anyone that would consider custom building a replacment grip out of micarta for my USMC? I was thinking it would be pretty cool to have the "stacked washer" look and shape of a kabar, but the rings made from different colors of micarta washers as opposed to leather  (I was thinking like a dark purple, a turqoise, dark purple layer ect. (I know it isn't spelled correct but im too pressed for time atm) I would really appreciate any help I could get, as I don't have any experience getting custom work done, and I am new here. ;) Also this knife is priceless to me, so I would like to put the finished grip on myself as this knife is very special to me.

It is the standard USMC gov't issue circa. 1943. It has been passed down though my family generation to generation and been in four major world conflicts. WW2~ (carried by my great uncle (a machine gunner) who died with it belted to his hip, and my grandfather, who carried it through japan after the nuclear bombs where dropped on hiroshima and nagasaki. He served as a cook) ,vietnam~ (carried by my uncle, but I don't know much of the story there, he never talked about his service. His military record just said he was there. Thats all.) and most recently~ carried by my father in afghanistan) My grandfather, Dick Vanderstraaten left this knife willed to my father when he passed, and my father gave me the knife on a hunting trip a few months back.

I saw that the zombie knives are now being made in the U.S. and i was wondering if there were any rumors or plans to move the hunting line to the U.S. as well. also what is the msrp on the master key tool?

Hey Toooj,

After KA-BAR's, well, underwhelming? sheath-knife offerings at SHOT this year...?

PING!

:D

Thanks Toooj.

A small question that is not very important in the grand scheme of great KA-BAR products; however, there is some confusion in my mind about what to call the various Becker variants. Perhaps too OCD or something. There is a Gen I with a solid handle and a stamped logo. A Gen II with a skeletonized handle and a stamped logo. And now a third one with a skeletonized handle and a laser-etched logo. Would this third variant be a Gen III or a Gen IIa? Does KA-BAR have official designations for these models?

Its a Gen III, Ray.

Kabar has never made a distiguishable designation of the various variation in the BKT line. We have of course, made our own designations.

Its a Gen III

camuley hunter,

We at KA-BAR have talked at length about bringing back the Leather Hunters to the US for manufacturing. There are still too many issues that prevent that from happening. But keep hoping maybe something will change in the future.

zemapeli,

Micarta is easy to find and a good machine shop should be able to help you out with your project...unless you want to do it yourself.

Garandamal,

Still a no-go.

Seeing how I am from Nebraska I should give that a try. I did have Kobe beef once in Japan it is very good.

LG&M,

You should try some. Expensive but worth it. Steve Johnson's family runs it. (Steve Johnson of JAB/KA-BAR knives).

why are the new 1217 USMC so narrow at the base by the pommel, I picked up a new one, and it is thinner, more narrow then mine I have had for 20+ years? thanks for your time Toooj.

pmcconnell,

The blade/tang dimensions are the exact same spec as the original WWII model. The thickness may vary as the steel thickness tolerance from the steel mill is very wide (+/- 0.007" and greater).
The coating can also make the tang look larger and thicker on some batches. The coating has a thickness tolerance that varies.
These are bugaboos that we constantly fight from our vendors.
Hope this helps.
