Okay, I said I would follow up on the "What to do?" Post. Here it is. Unfortunately, my computer blew out sometime in summer and I lost some of the emails and exchanges.

Started back in March '99 sometime when the REKAT Carnivour first came out. I received an unsolicited email from Matt Wilson/Kansas Tactical that he had two Carnivours for $130. Here is the email:

>>

I called him up and (un)fortunately got one. It came with significant vertical play and a bent tip. There was actually a thread in REKAT talking about it along with a picture posted by Matt himself. This thread seems to be lost. But another thread with reference to it: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001704.html.

As soon as I got the defective Carnivour, I went about sending it back assuming that the some UPS guy played with it though the box looked untouched. But I wanted to give the benefit of doubt. I called Matt up immediately and said there was problem. Matt said perhaps I should send it to REKAT. I said I just got this from him and that I would prefer to send it back to him rather going to REKAT since they have nothing to do with the problem (unless Matt had sent me a defect with full knowledge...) My assumption is that Matt could get insurance reimbursement from UPS as the sender. I immediately sent the carnivour back to him -- I have the insured receipt from USPS -- and emailed Matt from work to confirm the carnivour was on its way to him. Here is the email:

If REKAT fans remember, the Carnivore was behind in production for awhile. So rather taking a reimbursement I was willing to wait til Kansas Tactical got their new carnivours and then get my replacement.

Well, months went by. Understandable since alot of dealers were waiting for the REKATs. But then Matt either posted on his site or send an email saying he was no longer carrying REKATs. I called and asked why? He reported that he had problems with REKAT's QC. I responded, "too bad" but then can I get a reimbursement. I didn't get it in my next credit card bill so I sent an email. Here is the email:

Hi Matt,

Communicated several weeks ago about reimbursing my credit card account for
$130, since you will no longer carry the REKAT carnivour and will not be
getting a replacement for me. I didn't see a credit in my credit card bill
today. Just want to give you a reminder.

Please email me when this is done. Thanks.

Hi Matt,

I'm checking in again to see if you have reimbursed my credit card for $130
for the returned carnivour. I would appreciate a response as to whether this
has been done or when you plan to do it.

Thanks,

david<<

Other emails were sent which I no longer have either because they were not saved or gone with the blown computer. SOme recent emails include these:

>>Subj: Reimbursement for returned Carnivore
Date: 10/8/99
To: wilsons@kstactical.com

Matt,

I've tried to contact you several times by email to ask for a reimbursement of $130 for the damaged carnivour I received and immediately returned to you last March. Perhaps, you did not receive these emails. But, please get back to me by Wednesday, Oct 13, with a response.

If I don't get a response, I feel compelled to seek recourse through other means, and to apprise to others of the less than satisfactory dealing I have had with you on this matter.

sincerely,

david moy<<

FINALLY, I GET THIS RESPONSE FROM MATT WILSON:

>>Subj: Re: Reimbursement for returned Carnivore
Date: 10/9/99 12:50:32 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From: wilsons@kstactical.com (Kansas Tactical)
To: DYSMOY@aol.com

David,
I will mail you a check on 10/15. Sorry for the delay. Please also reply
with your mailing address just for security.
Matt

Matt,

I have yet to received the check. Please respond by Wed, Nov 17th. I have been more than patient. After said date, I will contact the credit company to seek their help in getting a reimbursement, I will notify others on your customer list regarding this situation, and I will notify the knife using - internet community in Knifeforums and Bladeforums about the situation.

I prefer not to go that route as I do not particularly want to damage other's livelihood.
This situation, however, seems to warrant more action as reluctant as I am to take those...

In my other post, Nakano said I should know what to do with this problem since I am a "vet" in the forums. Truthfully, I didn't know what to do. In fact, Matt Wilson and Kansas Tactical was the first time I ever did business over the 'net. In between, I have done business with SkyLandscutlery.com, Knifeoutlet.com, ABC-Direct.com, Northwestcutlery.com, PVK&T.com, Arizona Customknives.com, Gurka House, HI, BF forums and others. All have been more than satisfactory. So I know there are more reputable dealers than not out there. Had this negative experience transpired sooner, I would have been turned off to e-commerce. I get hoping/believing that Matt would live up to some ethical standard. Coupled with my inexperience, I totally procrastinated in going public. But, alas...

Many BF and KF members are on his mailing list. TO you and others, this warning has been posted!!!!

You had better take care of Davis Moy and his $130 refund...promptly, I might add. What the hell kind of business do you run anyway? A bogus one
I'd imagine. -AR

Well, at least he knows someone else is aware of a poorly handled business situation.

I hope this helps David recoup his $130.

You've made me smile again Jackyl. You seem to stomp right in where most would never go!

Well....I just can't stand for the crap that goes on sometimes, I'm really not an idiot. After all, I'm in the middle of a lawsuit against the body shop that ripped off my new truck and have ery little patience with people who like to screw the innocent around.

It's time to get what's yours man...-AR

I will be contacting the credit card company tomorrow with what I have. As to Matt/Kansas Tactical belonging to an professional association, I don't think so, or least not that I noticed. Anyone else know?

please post his email address so more of us can email him and maybe he'll get the hint that it's hurting his business not to refund David's money.

<EM>Good grief!!</EM>

Why is this seller apparently committed to a self-inflicted disaster?!? He won't get to keep the money (with which he could hardly flee to South America anyway); he'll be flagged in the credit card dB; and potential buyers are going to view him as a crook.

I have a suggestion for future transactions, use American Express. (no I don't work for them) They have the best track record for going after problems like this one. I had a problem with a dealer last spring who turned out to be totally dishonest, they screwed other people out of thousands. But because I used AMEX, they fell right into line and I got my money back, while others did not.

Text of my note to Mr. Wilson:

"This is becoming somewhat high-visibility. I think it's in best the interest of your
business to graciously refund Mr. Moy's money ASAP. If, however, you feel that
being portrayed before the most dedicated members of this hobby as irreputable is
something that your business can withstand, then hey - it's your tax return...

I hope that things work out amicably for both of you.

Sincerely,

Brian Turner"

Good luck, Sing!

Wow! I take it personally when someone from "Kansas" attempts to screw the public. What is the address for Kansas Tactical. I've never heard of them, but that doesn't mean anything either. Maybe they have a store front?

Folks,

Thanks for your support! I did contact my credit card company. They said to turn in the relevant information and they will make a decision in 30 days. The service rep said I should have acted sooner. I said I had agreed to wait for a replacement for the defective product and took the man at his word. Then I trusted he would credit my account when him said he no longer carried the product.

A lesson learned.

I will update when I hear from the credit card company.

Question: He does mass emailing. I have email addresses to many of his customers/potential customers. Should I "spam" them with a warning?

Sing -

Consider his potential customers warned. Don't actively endeavor to hurt his business, or take an action that could be interpreted that way.

Suprisingly, I haven't...maybe they show their faces at the local shows...I'll look.
