Kelly Axe Mfg Co/Tool Co/Tool Works/True Temper

Hi and thanks guys. I haven't used the Kelly Perfect Barco yet. It came with an unfinished edge. The bit is blunt, almost a 1/16 inch flat grind on it. I was told that it was shipped that way so one could finish the bit the way each customer would prefer it. I haven't touched it yet.

I had also read somewhere that Barco was going to stop making the Kelly Perfects so I bought a Kelly Perfect Dayton and a Kelly Perfect Michigan for my collection. Sorry the Michigan isn't in the pictures. The bit on the Michigan came the same way.

Since I have several Perfect users, so I'm going to leave the Barco's as they came, in new condition.

Thanks for the kind words, Kelly are my favorites...I have many more that I need to take picture of and post here...Someday...

My regards, Tom

I will edit this with pics tomorrow but I picked up a Kelly yesterday marked in a way and a profile that I have yet to see. Profile is something of a tomahawk, upper and lower edges do not look machine forged- not that even. It also has rounded ears ?? I had only seen that on Swedes. Weight should be around 3-3-1/4 pounds but is mounted to hard to be sure. Marking is printed and close to poll- pretty faint but legible "KELLY'S FLINT EDGE" next line below is "CHARLESTON W VA U.." has was appears to be a "P" on the opposite side and has a steel cap in the eye. I do not think the handle s original as it has the clipped fawns foot but the cap fits the eye exactly so I think it was carried over.

Any idea what this axe is? Axe apparently belonged to W Coulter at one time as he stamped his initial and last name on head.

Thanks,
Bill
Bit to Poll- 7 1/8"
Toe to heel- 4 1/2"
Poll 2.5" top to bottom, 1 1/8" thick
Bottom of ear to top of eye- 3'
eye .85 X 2.53

Thanks Square_peg. Rockaway.....cool. Same guy I usually buy local handles from was holding his own old Plumb 5lb axe he rehafted for me and also had this one. Coat of paint obscured all but the W Coulter and he just threw it in for cheap. Wire brush showed the faint markings. I REALLY like this axe, handle is split but I will fix that.

Not to be a thread dredger, but this thread is suddenly of relevance- looking at a Kelly 4-1/4# double, and it's got the Charleston stamp. Any info on collectibility/rarity of the
KELLY FLINT EDGE
CHARLESTON W. VA USA
stamping axes or a timeframe of their production? I ask least know it's 1904-1930, but I would imagine it wasn't the exact same for those 26 years.

Hi. I am new to the forum. I just bagged a Kelly Falls City Axe and a True American Hatchet on my last metal detecting trip. I am posting some photos of the same model Axe I have that unfortunately is in better condition than mine. I am hoping for some help identifying its age. I hope my photo links work. I may have to change Facebook privacy settings. If there is a way to import pictures directly into post, I will need help.

This is all really interesting. I found a True Temper Kelly Works Red Warrior double bit in the metal bin at the local recycle place. I cleaned it up, sharpened and rehung it and it's been my go to splitting ax for the last couple years. Can't seem to date it.

Here is a Kelly's, Flint Edge, Hand Forged.
It seems that Kelly wasn't the only axe maker to use "Flint Edge" as part of there stamps. Geneva Tool Co also used it and atleast one other manufacturer that I can't recall at the moment. Maybe just as part of AA&T Co before Kelly bought them?

Older post, I know. I'm a new member and was working on a Kelly Axe and Tool CO. Hatchet. Would really appreciate ANY responses. Thanks in advance guys. PS how do I post a pic? This thing is sweet, educated guess 1920ish.

I have an axe with copper look blades that label on front reads The Copper King Kelly Axe MFG CO and it also is stamped with True Temper and back is stamped Kelly Axe & Tool Co Charleston WVA USA. I am trying to find out more info on the axe I have... I'm new so I'm unsure of how to upload pictures here.

Hey operator I have a Kelly champion and my dad has a kelly 2 bit but the writing is gone just wondering may even how old they really are and maybe the value I will send a picture when I can

Kelly red warrior double bit and Kelly works flint edge true temper. Both bought in rough condition from a flea market. Stripped the rust and polished them up.

Wow Josh. Both of those are keepers. The Flint Edge Connecticut is especially good-looking.
