Kelly Axe Mfg Co/Tool Co/Tool Works/True Temper

Hi. I am new to the forum. I just bagged a Kelly Falls City Axe and a True American Hatchet on my last metal detecting trip. I am posting some photos of the same model Axe I have that unfortunately is in better condition than mine. I am hoping for some help identifying its age. I hope my photo links work. I may have to change Facebook privacy settings. If there is a way to import pictures directly into post, I will need help.

Just looked you up on QRZ...KK6DZA here, I was wondering how long for me to run into another HAM! Also I could not open pics.

Here's a Kelly the worlds finest I picked up for 5 dollars at a yard sale

Gotta love it when you come home with something like that. Yard sales are you best prices but you have to look at a lot of them to find anything good. I hit 4 sales yesterday and came home with nothing at all.

Hi, I am new to the forum and am wondering where the best place would be to sell a Kelly Black Raven double bit axe? I am in Canada and not too keen on using eBay.

Great for him by the way with
fantastic information.

I received a Kelly Works Champion hatchet from a family member. The handle is clear until the top 2 inches where it is green. The steel still shows some of the worn green paint. Anyone know when this model was manufactured?

Value of these is horribly inflated via by collector appeal and demand. These were not top-of-the-line Kellys either! I don't think the Canadian market was privy to very many (if any) of these because there were probably tariffs at the border and there were 1/2 dozen Canadian makers of axes (Welland Vale, Walters among them) supplying the local market at that time. Kijiji is a Canuck Internet sales site phenomenon and if your search word is "black raven axe" chances are you'll get to see every listing that comes up right across the country.

Found an old axe head, single bit, while demoing one of my great grandfather’s old barns. He was a logger here in South Louisiana in the 1940's and 50's. His father was a logger also. It was very rusty so I have been soaking it in evaporust for a few days. Finally getting it cleaned up enough to see a makers mark. Only markings so far are simple block letters maybe 3/16" tall along the edge of the poll. "KELLY WORKS". No other visible markings at all. I will post pics after I get home this evening and give it good washing. Everything I have seen here has significantly different markings. These appear to be hand struck.

Eddie.

anything True Temper is good enough for me.
True Temper would be a no brainer nowadays.
thanks for posting all the cool info

I think it may actually say true temper across the top of "KELLY WORKS". It's very faint. Got her re-handled today. I'll take few pics later. And cut down a 12" sweet gum for good measure. She feels pretty good in the hand. I was amazed at how clean the edge actually was after the rust was gone.

I could not have found this thread at a better time! I'm currently trying to locate a Kelly Michigan or Western double-bit that is stamped as being made in WVa. I NEED one for my users collection.

I have been shopping for a Kelly Perfect Jersey pattern. While browsing that big auction sight, I have noticed eye ridges in these. Well some of them with 6 some with 4 and some without. Just curious if this could be a way to better date them. Also what some of you more experienced axe men prefer with or without the eye ridges.

Thanks
