Ken Erickson Knives: A Retrospective

Magnificent blade ! A "stoutie" too, 3/16" i bet or maybe even 1/4" ?
roland

Actually comes in at .130 , just a hair over 1/8 , as is the Saynor. For comparison sake , the liners on this knife are .040. The liners on the Saynor are closer to .025 and brass. This difference of .015 thicker, and stainless instead of brass is where a lot of the increase in strength lies.

I think one of the reasons the blade looks stout is the fact the spine is square, compared to many vintage knives. When you look at most vintage knives with years of use that sharp corner is broke/rounded, possibly made that way from the get go.

The Bolsters are gonna be great, Ken. A Rat-tail and a thread line - nice combination.
C'mon Stag - head on home! Where's that postie Lady when ya need her??

I received the stag in the mail yesterday and this piece looks like it will work best on this knife. This is some John Loyd Stag via Vince. Thanks guys! The hard part is going to be able to split the taper and flatten so as to retain the majority of the bark. The way the tapers are curved you have to wonder if the pruners frame was influenced by the stag? Almost uncanny how close the natural curves to the tapers that I received are to the curves of the pruner.

That's an outstanding piece of stag. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Beautiful Stag, but hard to imagine making it fit! I'm guessing there will be a fairly full "round" handle - I'm on the edge of my chair!!

Well, really disappointed! Looks like I will not be able to get these tapers to fit. Back to the drawing board on this one. I did get close with one set but It meant too much bark taken off. Not the look I am shooting for.

Ken, Looks GREAT! I love old prunners! Can't wait to
see the finished product! Thanks for sharing...

Ouch! I'm guessing the stag needs a larger radius!? (Flatter curve?)

Charlie,

The curve is really good, I need a larger and more "oblong" piece. By the time I got it thin enough I lost too much width. This knife, I think, deserves my best shot at finding suitable stag.

That's what I thinking, too little radius?

The curve (think banana) looked perfect. Maybe just slightly curvier than the liners, but that would just accentuate it more.
I hope you can find some tapers that will work with a similar bend.

I couldn't agree more!

I was pretty bummed when the stag did not work that I received today. I was having a cup of coffee when I remembered I had a few "large" pieces of stag put back in a box.

I am real happy with the look. I was shooting for what I thought could pass as a vintage looking piece of stag. Sorry about the grubby hands, Potassium Permanganate will do that. This piece of stag took it very well and matched the un-sanded areas. Course I have much finish work to go on the scales yet but I think I have achieved the over all affect I was looking for. (note: no pixels were harmed in photoshop ,exposure and clarity correction only).

If you were shootin for the "old English" look with that Stag Ken I'd say "ya nailed him clean" That prunner just speaks to me deep down somewhere.
If I could get my hands on that baby, I'd be lookin for an fruit orchard of some kind or another.
Thanks for takin us along on this journey Ken it's been grand!

I bet you can't say, "Gosh, that's gorgeous," ten times quickly. I know I can't, 'cause I just tried! :p

This was a fun roller coaster ride! I started reading from the top of the page and was all excited about that nicely figured taper and then was sorry that it wasn't gonna fit... and then... POW! Ken, wallops us with a photo of the WIP knife already perfected fitted with a gorgeous piece of stag. I think the deer had this knife in mind when it grew those antlers!
