Ken Onion Knives Stolen

In all fairness, I didn't see Bladeprince commenting negatively on Ken or his knives, only on the idea that a dozen security agencies should have gone off immediately to work on this theft, however significant it is to us, as if it had been a terrorist threat... as in fact we hear even the most immediately responsible officers were slow to get away from their donuts (another cliché, of course)
As for Scott Dog, I remember his year-old grind about Ken supposedly laughing at him at a show for asking about making a leftie knife for him...
that was pretty well cleared many months ago. A laugh can be mistaken as a slight, being amused can be misconstrued as being scornful. The idea of just asking Ken for a personal favor that a million other people have pestered him about before, must seem funny to most observers, however serious the request, and however hurtful the amusement, may feel to the bidder. But Scott Dog has been assured that this was just a misunderstanding since Ken is one of the most kindly and personable of knifemakers, the most fair-minded in terms of selling his knives and doing good with some of the profits I should add. So why harbor such resentment for such a long time? Because it's the only personal encounter with (one of) the leading knifemaker in the world?
As for anyone else who finds the knives ugly, let them think and say so. Ken's knives are coveted too much for him to ever keep up with demand, so if there are people who don't share my/our preference, they're welcome to making it more exclusive.
All this without even addressing Ken personally with all the commiseration etc. expressed above. If I may offer a personal reflection that might be helpful : I still have my custom Onions and might be inconsolable if I'd been robbed of them, but other, only slightly less valuable things have been stolen from me: and I try to be philosophical by thinking that they're not lost, they're just with someone else. It's a fincancial loss, but it won't destroy Ken's business or keep him from making more of the same of what got lost - which may be recovered, let's hope.
Glad to see Ken's still alive and kicking - hope the Onionolic's website will recover as well! :-)

I wasn't going to post anymore to this thread but I wish to thank Tristram for actually reading my posts and understanding my train of thought. I will leave the others referenced in your post to reply for themselves, if they wish. I tried in vain to explain my position but finally gave up. There's no turning the "mob's judgment", if you know what I mean.

Even this "thank you" may bring another onslaught of nasty, misunderstood, comments my way. But the time you took to read and understand my thinking, plus the personal touch of even writing a response in support, deserved at the minimum a public thank you from me. So, again, thank you.

Regards

This thread was the wrong place for anyone to opine ANYTHING other than "wow, that is a terrible loss, hope you get your knives back, Ken".

Ken:

Please accept my apologies for my uncalled for remarks. I've been working a lot lately and not getting much sleep. You are a legend in the knife world and truly deserve every penny you make and you deserve all the attension and recognition that you get. We all make mistakes and my comments made in this tread were inappropriate and uncalled for. Like I said it really sucks about what happened to you. I'll drop the attitude. I'm sorry for my insensitivity. I also apologize to the members in this forum who have also taken offense. Those who know me know that I'm not usually like this.:o :foot:

I know what it's like to get knives lost/stolen. And the TSA in my crappy opinion sucks.

Who ever stole them, definatly needs a case of the brass knuckle dentistry.

Tristam was quite fair and humane in his breakdown.
I read your posts for what they were and didn't think that they were especially disrespectful, either. Definitely not worth all the drama.
Sometimes humor can be taken the wrong way, especially when it's in written form and lacking in any kind of clarifying tone. "Dozens" of law enforcement agencies kind of paints an intense manhunt-type picture to me too, helicopters and speedboats deployed. Parts can be funny even if the whole is tragic. It's hard for some to appreciate or even accept this.
I don't think that Scott, either, was necessarily deserving of the backlash that he got after his admittedly negative comments.
People don't like to hear or read anything but the "correct" words when it concerns a situation that they've deemed sacred.
I have a tendency to aggravate touchy situations, myself.
I hope that the lynch mob lets you down from the rope to spend your future in these forums on solid (and equal) ground.

SO

4 days since the last addition.
Any progress made on finding these knives?
Any new information worth sharing?

Many thanks for the support. I also use humor in dealing with my own life situations. We all deal in our own way. But in the future, I think I'll keep those types of comments to myself as others may get the wrong idea. I truely did not intend of offend. Thank you again.

And yes there are over a dozen agencies looking into this because there are thirteen knives in a secure area in an airport somewhere were someone with nefarious intent could do damage with them. It is a national security issue . If they could steal my knives they could also steal a handgun or rifle and really cause problems with Homeland safety The system needs to be fixed and this incident just happened to shed a big spotlight on a hole in the system
And my wife wonders why I regard the idea of flying with abhorrence?
  • I don't trust the airlines in any respect whatsoever
  • The airlines treat their customers like cattle
  • You can't carry jack onto the plane with you anymore
  • The baggage system loses, or has stolen from it, an unconsionable quantity of personal property
  • Quite seriously: I nether quite trust the government nor its airport security
I have not flown since 9/11. Actually hadn't flown since some time before that. Funny thing is: I used to love flying. These days I avoid it like the plague.

Heh... These people confiscate personal property left-and-right, then government turns around and auctions it off, all allegedly due to airplane/airport security. Then you see this kind of thing happen. Airport security indeed!

Sorry to hear your stuff was stolen, Mr. Onion.

I sure hope you manage to recover your beautiful knives. I also hope the thieving scumbag(s) who stole them are caught and feel the full weight of the federal government. I will certainly keep my eyes open around the other forums. Best Wishes Mr. Onion. Jim Falor SEMPER FI

This is terrible news. The TSA has never made me feel safer, just violated.
I hope that Ken gets a break on this one, and that the knives resurface. Awful, just awful.

If i see anyone in the S.F. area with a custom onion in their pocket i'll just tackle them and quickly post on BF for reinforcements. :grumpy:

Ken, I think that the theft was a terrible thing and I wish you luck in getting your pieces back. I live near the SF Airport and I'll keep my eyes and ears to the ground.

On a more practical note: Recently I was talking with a coworker about the decline of security for checked baggage; more people with access to luggage, locks with universal keys etc. He mentioned that he had heard that some professional photographers who fly often with expensive equipment have taken to putting in a small pistol with their equipment and shipping the container as a firearms container. This ensures that a TSA take extra precautions around the case. Although the time and hassle involved with checking in a firearm is considerable, it may be worth the extra security it gets you. The TSA has a page on their procedures: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1666.shtm

Scott Dog, your comments are shameful and dissappointing.

Ken, I truly hope that you get your knives back.

Scott Dog just posted a heartfelt apology to Ken and the forum, check post #104 in this thread.

Scott Dog, Thank You for your public apology.

Would there be a way to anchor knives to the inside of the suitcase so it becomes more trouble than its worth to try and take them? Or would this just cause problems with security?

And like everyone else, I am pretty horrified to hear about this. Those knives were BEAUTIFUL, each one was like a little treasure. Very sad indeed :-(

Crap.....Im a little late on seeing this post, but I can relate. I had my entire collection of about 40 current and out of production balisongs stolen about 3 years ago with no insurance to claim. There were some security issues with the place I was in at the time, and I really paid the price. For me, it sucked so bad thinking about it that I got out of collecting all together. Hell, I havent even been here in over a year. I dont know Ken or his work, but got a feeling this is just a shitty bump in the road and he will go on creating beutiful things............

Regarding zippered suitcases, I had a TSA gent show me how a zipper could be opened and closed with a ballpoint pen. I use a hard sided UK case with two Master Locks and have the TSA check it before it goes through. Still not foolproof but as close as I can figure out.

Can someone close to this situation tell us who we should call if we have information about this theft? I don't, but "tackling someone and posting on BladeForums for reinforcements" isn't exactly the right way for someone to go about helping the situation.

If someone actually sees one of these knives, what should they do?

Iv been spreading the word. All the local cuttlery shops know to be on the lookout for your knives Ken.
