Photos Kepharts...They just Work

I was contemplating on acquiring a Becker at some point. The wood scales look classic but I know I like micarta too with a good feel.
I had one awhile ago and traded it off like a dummy. I actually had thought about getting some longer fasteners and putting some thicker liners on it. I was thinking about orange liners.
Although, I gotta thing for green canvas micarta. :)

Ok, my BK62 came, I like it, kind of understated at first to me, but it is growing on me the more I handle it and cut paper (remember I am an armchair user at this point) and try different grips. I like the rounded edges not to hurt the thumb in a choked up grip, but i I agree with another comment I read how I wish part of the spine had a 90 degree edge for scraping or for the fires steel.

I can add one for you

That would be cool, a little farther up to the middle of the spine but not too close where I naturally place my thumb. Let’s talk when you have time and you can play with it too. :)

I have a BK62 so I wouldn't need to play with it much. You could sharpie up the spine where you want it sharp and I could grind that for you.

I get that the Kephart is a "traditional" design but, I'm sorry, it just doesn't appeal to me.
Personally, I think it's a beautiful design. But I don't like them based on looks, I like them based on function.
Hey, to each his own. What's your favorite knife?

I've never owned/used a Kephart but I don't see how the blade design would be more functional than any number of other fixed blade knives that I've owned/used.

It should be a good slicer/cutter w/the flat blade edge but the shape at the tip seems too blunt on most models (for piercing or fine tip cutting and seems destined for misuse as a pry bar.

What do you consider the primary advantages of a Kephart over other blade/knife styles and what task(s) do you think that it's best suited for?

Agreed but i don't have a single "favorite" knife.

It depends on the style/function and intended use/purpose for which it is designed.

99.9% of the knives I own are strictly collector items that I'll never use and I have many "favorites" among them, including autos, balis, folders and fixed blades.

However, among the knives that I actually use on a daily basis, my "favorite" knives would be a Swiss Army Explorer, a cheap Henkle s/s pairing knife and a medium sized carbon steel Chinese cleaver.

LOL! ;)

I still love the Kephart design and in terms of form or function the BK62 is the best choice for me. Many of the other kepharts lack the tapered spine and that is honestly such a big advantage for prolonged cutting behaviour / feel / fatigue.

And yet it doesn't go along on a lot of trips with me. Why? Because it's 1095 and rusts. If only it were a better steel. I'd pay extra for the exact same knife in a great stainless steel. Then it would become my no. 1 fixed blade knife of all time.

Consider the CPK Kephart in CPM 3V. It's not stainless but has much, much better resistance than 1095. The overall feel is pretty darn close to the BK62 to me. I would have to look but I'm pretty sure they did some in AEB-L as well.

I think that's the reason, right there. The beauty of the Kephart comes from using it and realizing what a simple but versatile design it is, not from looking at it on a shelf.
