Photos Kepharts...They just Work

Just a note that your Explorer blade has the same shape as a Kephart, just smaller :)

The smaller blade on my SAK has a similiar blade shape similar to a Kephart but not the larger blade which is more of a drop point.

However, there's no way to carry a full sized Kephart in my pocket or the small pouch in my day pack AND a full sized Kephart would be difficult and impractical to use as a letter opener or a wine foil remover, which is what I use the SAK in my kitchen for most. LOL! ;)

I know there's an edge on it but the "shape" of a Kephart just reminds me of a big butter knife. No offense to those who LOVE their Kepharts but I've got a lot of other fixed blade knives that I use and the Kephart is still not going to replace any of them.

It's just not for me and never will be.

I knew a guy who thought every car he ever owned and drove was the best car on the road. Didn't matter what it was, it was the best.
I don't feel that way with a Kephart type knife. They aren't for everybody, but neither is a Bowie knife. You either do or you don't. I just like them. Period.

I don't like drop points, wharncliffe or those stupid mega choppers either. But I'm happy that those who do can get them.

Feel free to put me on your "ignore" list if you don't want to read anything that I have to say in this or any other thread.
I’m just saying; I don’t like nor discuss politics. Neither do I go to the political sub forum to tell them how much I dislike what they are here to enjoy. You on the other hand have a different strategy.

You just got added to MY "ignore" list and have been reported for trying to make a trivial matter "personal."

sgt1372 sgt1372 was very respectful in giving his opinion, no need to try and run the guy off.

Thanks for your support but I'm not "running off."

I will continue to follow this thread because I'm curious what people find attractive about Kepharts; just in case there's something I'm "missing" about them that might cause me to reconsider them.

I only commented once about my personal opinion about the knife and then responded to some "bait" about my SAK having a blade like the Kephart and to the suggestion that the thread might "not be for me" but otherwise I've been silent.

If you don't call me out, I won't say anything unless I feel that I have something "worth" saying. So, I'm still going to continue to participate in this and any other thread that I feel that I have something to say, whether others agree w/it or not.

I've just SILENCED the the "guy" (I have a stronger adjective I'd use to describe him but I'd get "reported" if I used it) so that I don't have to "listen" to him try to "bait" me anymore. Life is so much more enjoyable on this and other forums when I don't have to listen to nonsense from people like him.

He's not the 1st person on my "ignore" list and he won't be the last.

Just admit it.....you LOVE! Kepharts!!
You doth protest to much!
I dont think you're missing anything..you know they're awesome!
And the only thing you're running off to do is grind ALL your knives into Kepharts!
Now "ignore" me while you buy another Kephart😉
Its a simple design that works well, like a Loveless drop point, a SAK, or a standard Chefs knife, I think what a lot of people like is seeing a design like this that is a pleasing balance between form and function. For me it ticks the same boxes as a F.S. dagger, Katana, a Barlow, a SAK or a old hickory butcher knife, a simple, very functional design that can be used like a blank canvas to express the skill and creativity of a individual maker.
Now go on!...buy a Kephart....or keep bein sad😏

I had one awhile ago and traded it off like a dummy. I actually had thought about getting some longer fasteners and putting some thicker liners on it. I was thinking about orange liners.
Although, I gotta thing for green canvas micarta. :)
Well heck, I found a deal on a BK 62 I couldn't pass up. Should be here the first of next week. I'm going to look for some longer screws and some florescent green G10 for liners to add some thickness. My question is, how do you grind the G10 so as not to mar the walnut slabs?

What do you consider the primary advantages of a Kephart over other blade/knife styles and what task(s) do you think that it's best suited for?.
I hope you don’t mind the late reply and me chiming in.

I don’t think kephart is the best knife - it is pretty darn close to best knife for MY tastes. :)

There are of course different kinds of Kephart knives but I like their versatility the most. My Brisa kephie can whittle and carve well but also is excellent food knife. I’d say full flat convex is not as good for wood compared to scandi but scandis in other hand are just not as good food knives. Also I like the spear blade that is a good mix between having belly and tip control. Also some people like the blade because it’s easy to ”drill” with being centered with the handle.

Another thing I love about Kephart is the very simple handle that allows freedom for your hand. No choils or finger grooves or other hot spots.

But also of course I also enjoy the rather ”plain” old world aesthetics. I totally understand why it’s not everyones thinh but it is mine. 😄

Has anybody tweaked a BK 62?
Mine has been probably more than I have seen anywhere else......

Crag, I remember yours now. I'd dearly love to see your handle taken apart showing what you used for liners and where did you source the screws and nuts?
Thanks brother!

AL, nice review. Beautiful knife! If those gloves could talk. :)

I can take pics, but it's just brass that I made the liners out of.
I love the extra weight and balance it gives the knife.
In that other link I sent there are part numbers to the screws and cup washers. I ordered them from Lee Valley. idk if they still sell them?
I won't lay claim to being the first to use cup washers and flat head screws for knife hardware, but I haven't seen it before, except Mine.

Personally I think it is by far the Best hardware to use on classic looking knives.
I also did this to a Becker BK-15. Looks Sharp!

I have some similar but different hardware I'm going to be using on some upcoming butcher/camp knives I'm making.... I'm really excited to show off.

Thanks! Yes, I am quite proud of my faithful leather gloves! I thought I was crazy to spend so much for gloves but the first time I put them on and put them to work I fell in love with them! I use them in any labors and chores, camping and open fire cooking sessions. I will never leave them out of adventures!
