Kerry Hampton Knives

Long story short....

Man wants desk knife/letter opener made with walrus ivory that his son brought back from Alaska. An original design that is sabre shaped around 9". I used the 3 5/8" swayback handle shape and designed the blade to flow from that. Ended up kinda looking like a walrus tusk so this is what I called it...."Walrus" ;)

It's 9 1/4" OAL, made with 3/32" ATS-34, covered with some of the ivory. Blade is thin and very flexable. Would make a great filet knife.

That one looks awesome Kerry. I love the long swedge and the subtle yet functional looking guard. You just created a family heirloom. Well done sir. :)

Really nice looking desk and yes, looks like it would be great for fillet knife.

Kerry,

what are your impressions working with walrus ivory?

Ken

Nice job Kerry. I know those long fillet type blades are tricky to do.I also know, they are a very useful style knife.Glad to see you doing knives like that

Thanks for all the looks and encouragement, folks.

Ken, the piece I sliced up was the root of a tusk about 9" long. Due to the hollow root, only about 5 inches of the tusk was usable...just right.

As far as workability, I found the color to be OK but not as uniform as elephant. It is more brittle and seems to be more prone to chipping. It has more of a translucent quality. I like the odd stuff that occurs in the center but I think the outer layers are more stable. I did include the "eye" on the mark side scale for interest and also anyone that knows ivory would recognize it as walrus.

Nice looking jigging, Kerry!!! (And the knife ain't bad either! ;))

That jigging does look great. I'm sure the new owner will be very pleased. (I think I know who is getting it.)

That's a real beauty Kerry! You are making knives that look as good as humanly possible. Your teacher should be very proud. I was lucky enough to fondle one of your knives over Christmas. Fit, finish, walk & talk as good as ANY of the top makers. I'm not kissing a** either. Congratulations on another winner!

Nicely done Kerry! My favorite steel! Bone also!!
My back pocket is poking me - "feed me" it says!!
