Kerry Hampton Knives

Wondering where folks that make handmade custom slipjoints get the bolsters, caps, and shields for all of the knives you make? Just curious. Do you make them too? Thanks.

The way we do it at the Wilfred Works is make the bolsters and caps out of sheet stock 410 SS and solder that to liner material. Some guys use thicker sheet stock and mill the bolsters out integral to the liners.

Some of the shields we use come from Case or outfits that cut them out with EDM or waterjet methods and have matching parser plates or templates. The parser plates are then used to cut out the pocket in the handle material.

In the case of rough handle material like that amber stag Khnutbuster I just finished last week, that shield was hand cut from .060" 410 SS stock and final shaped by filing it with a hardened shield template. The pocket in the stag hand cut with chisels.

Thanks for the information. Makes me appreciate all of the Wilfred stock I see on BladeForum all the more. Impressive!

elliot love the knife how did you get the patina so even?

Dennis, if you're referring to my "Lanny's Clip" from Kerry, he did an acid etch on the blade and spring in the interest of forestalling oxidation/corrosion. (Looks good to boot.):thumbup:

Thanks for the look Kerry. So no worries that you dont carry properly, Cant see that Lineup get any better. Im impressed that that was your first knife, I imagine one has to look thoroughly to se the improvements you do by growing experience considering that being a firt one. And your source for inspiration cant be higher. Im looking forward for the time coming when I will se one of your knifes in my hand.

That's one sweet "first", Kerry.

So that's really where all this started from... my, my, my, my, my.

There are subtle improvements that have taken place over the last 3 years, mostly in fit and finish. As always...thanks for the kind words.
