One of the nicest custom designs I have seen in a while is Ken Onions Spade model. Kershaw markets the pattern as the Cyclone, an affordable liner lock knife with steel liners, aluminium scales and a Sandvik 13C26 blade.

I think this is a perfect pattern for a high end, hard use framelock folder with premium steel. Our favorite Kershaw rep Tom has expressed the thought that the Leek might not have been the perfect choice for the ti/ZDP project, perhaps the folks at KAI would consider making the Cyclone the next go round?

Anyone else like the idea?

This was discussed already -

I agree this is very good design, however for such wide handle it should be thicker and I don't like framelocks, may be lock bar stabilizer make it better, but current Cyclon with red or orange CF or G10 inlays will be just great!

Thanks, Vassili.

Vassili, I am a frame-lock fan myself, if this has come up before then great, I want to keep the ball rolling. Between the original Bump and the new leek it seems Kershaw has the ways and means, if there is interest that provides the will!

I agree! A Frame-Lock Titanium-Handled Large and Mini-Cyclone with ZDP Steel. Maybe the same with a Spec Bump? A 1596TiZDP:cool: ? How sweet would that be?

Jeremy

Cyclone has great design and it is pretty natural to anybody who hold it to think that it should be in the top line with top steel and handle. I consider it as kind of economy version of ZT. However it is not quite same I think if it will have thick checked titamium scales - Like ZT300 has and lock stabilizer it will be OK. However it will be new model not Cycone, new production process etc.

Thanks, Vassili.

I'll throw this out, which way would you want to see this Cyclone:

Ti framelock, ZDP steel, SpeedSafe On/Off $250 MSRP

Textured G-10, liner lock, ZDP steel, SpeedSafe On/Off $150 MSRP

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a short run of these.

I still want a S30V Blur with a FLIPPER! Need that finger guard! Love the Blur size, but like the index open system.

Actually, Kershaw better slow down with the awesome knives or my wife and three-year old son are going to get knives for Christmas!

Thomas W, I was posting at the same time as you, sorry.

I think I like the idea of the frame-lock more than the zdp steel. Am I crazy? Would S30V with Titanium frame lock still MSRP over $200? Should I be worrying more about the steak than the peas?

I like ZDP I guess, (never used it), but for some reason I just like frame locks more. I suppose an entire forum could be devoted to the liner lock vs frame lock debate...

Either way, I think <$200 should be the target MSRP. So I would buy the 1630GTZDP!

Jeremy

p.s. why don't you send me a Prototype of both and I'll "sample" them for a few months and give you some good, honest feedback:D

Does the SpeedSafe On/Off contribute much to the mfg cost? I could certainly do without it.

Does anyone really prefer the Cyclone to other knives because of the On/Off Switch? I carry the Leek and Spec Bump daily. I carry my cyclone when I am going to get wet or sweaty, not because of the switch.

Not trashing the innovation or merits of the On/Off switch, but I don't consider it essential to anything but the Marketing Dept.

Jeremy

p.s. Thanks Thomas W for allowing my 2 cents and giving us another knife to look forward to!

Ti framelock. It would look good next to my Leek. If you do G10 I think polished would be nice but I would prefer a framelock. I have to say though, I really like what Spyderco is doing with nested liner locks. They are strong and very light.
Thanks for asking,
Jason
P.S. On/Off is nice but not important. I will also help to beta test if you need someone.;)

Ti framelocks are very popular right now, so that would be a sound choice, but i would much sooner go for the G10, personally. Cost is a big issue. Over $200 street gets into my high end semi custom fixed blade territory too much.

I agree! If its over $200, I'll never own it anyway, so I would prefer to sacrifice the frame-lock for the great steel and actually afford the knife.

Thomas, thanks for asking the question.

I would prefer the Ti Framelock, ZDP, SS version. I think this would be a good seller, and a short sprint run would get gobbled up in a hearbeat. Looking at the MSRP vs. net price of the 1660TIZDP I'm betting it would be available for <$200.

The liner lock version, even with the high end steel, would be lost in a sea of black G-10. There are still only a handful of high quality ti handled production knives, and not even your own ZT line uses ZDP.

I would be in for at least two.

I like textured G10 (please can it be orange? and bit thicker then it is now) with affordable price. What does mean textured? If it is SpecBump like it will be just great. This is my first choise.

I will agreed with Ti framelock also (it better be bit thicker then current Cyclone) It will bve my second choise. I just hope that you will sell it over normal www dealers and it will be available for street price.

In any case Thanks a lot for listening to us! This is unbelivable customer-manufacturer relations we have here with Kershaw.

Thanks, Vassili.

My vote goes for the Ti, frame-lock, speedsafe on/off and ZDP. Too much compromise and the knife will not be much different than the already available Cyclone (of course there is nothing wrong with that).

The Cyclone represents a well thought out knife to start with due to it's near ideal attributes as the original poster eloquently pointed out. So lets make it something special - the first option gets my vote - for a few dollars more (I seem to remember a movie by this name).

If I were to get one of these, it'd probably be the G10 one....I'm not one to make a big deal out of framelock/linerlock distinctions. However, the full sized cyclone is too big for me to consider, so it would have to be both sizes to get me onboard.

I think there are other Kershaws that need an update ahead of the Cyclone though.

Thomas W, I'd vote for the TI framlock. I also like G10, so really either would be sweet. Speedsafe on/off, no preferance. As long as you make them in both sizes. I can't legally carry the larger model in my state.

This is sooo cool. Helping a company decide which knives to make! Thanks Thomas W.
