Kershaw and Gerber both suck?

Always remember that opinions are like a****les. Everyone has one and a lot of them stink.

LOL, my dad always said that! :D

Or my other favorite quote every tiem I asked for something...

he would tell me to stick out my hands...he woudl grab one ha d and say I want you to wish in this hand, thenhe grabbed the other and said crap in this one...see which fills up 1st, lol...

When I was like 8 or 9 I never got it, but I got it when I was like 13, and I stopped asking for stuff and started earning it, lol...

Gerber sucks. They used to produce decent knives, but then, I used to weigh 165 lbs.

What's sad is that Gerber is selling their knives at prices that greatly exceed their worth. (In the latest Smoky Mountain catalog, a Gerber boot knife that's almost identical to the S&W boot knife ($16) is being sold for $47!) Gerber needs to lower its prices to reflect the cheaper components it uses.

Kershaw is a decent company. Its products are bargains. Naturally, a $40 Kershaw is going to be better than a $20 model. Its STORM and BLACK STORM ($30) are especially good deals.

I seem to find a wave of sentiment that Kershaws and Gerbers suck because they are made overseas

You read wrong. Most of the Kershaws I've ever seen have been made in the US. They're reliable, excellent quality blades.

Yes indeed. I have a Groove in 13C26 and all it needs is a touch up once in a while-and I cut a lot of cardboard, and EDC it every day.

To the OP: Stay away from the lansky systems. I have one, and I finally got fed up with it and use the hones freehand now. I want to get a Sharpmaker one of these days...

Well, my Gerber Crusader is one of my favorite knives. It's comfy in the hand, opens smoothly, locks up tight as a drum, takes a ridiculously sharp edge, and holds it for a long time when used for day to day light cutting chores. Last year, I bought a Gerber Air Ranger used off eBay, and it was in like new condition except that the previous owner had partially stripped the heads of two of the torx screws that hold it together. I called Gerber and told the lady the situation and asked her if she could tell me the size so I could find a couple replacements. She told me she'd just go ahead and send me a couple, and a few days later I got a package from Gerber with 5 new screws free of charge. I don't doubt the folks who say they've had bad Gerber experiences, but I thought you might like to hear the other side too. Just my $0.02.

Overall quality is not the same as customer service. I have a Paraframe I combo edge, and other than smooth opening, it was a total waste of time. Permanent surface rust, One of the frame screws simply FELL OUT, and you can forget about getting it sharp. On the other hand, there hasn't been a single thing wrong with my Kershaw, and when I sharpen it (I'm no expert) I can shave with it.

I have quite a few Gerbers
Both USA and China
Hatchets too
I like them all
I have a little Gerber LST that I have had for years
It is my favorite "little" knife
I can get it razor sharp pretty easily
For the price I would definitely recommend them
I have no Kershaws yet
They are a little pricey for me at the moment :grumpy:

I carried a Kershaw Blackout for over two years and it is an excellent knife. Its blade is the 440a but the newest ones are upgraded to 13C26. Also Kershaw has the very best customer service and most are made in Oregon U S A !!!

I have a gerber gator that I have carried for years. It is one of the originals that was made right here in portland. It has been a great knife that I would recomend to anyone.

Gerbers are some of the worst junk I've ever owned. Grade-wise, their knives are in about the same league as those made by Frost Cutlery, except for their Paraframes, which are worse.

I've have several Kershaw knives that are very nice quality, and I really like the Storm and Storm II.

I don't know if any knows this but Gerber recently recalled the Gerber Exchange-A-Blade
Pocket Knife.I just happen to come across this while visiting the gerber website.

Hazard: During use, the back of the blade of the knife can slide past the blade support, posing a laceration hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Gerber has received eight reports of individuals cutting themselves while using the knife, including several individuals who required stitches.

I have never heard of recalls in the cutlery industry before.

Well, the to give Gerber some credit, their higher end stuff still isn't bad. The Hinderer works great as does their multi tools

Don't knock Gerber. If it weren't such a crappy place to work we wouldn't have the wide range of cutlers in Portland. Gerber has supplied a large number of disgruntled, but trained workers to the industry there - Kershaw as well as Benchmade, Columbia, Leatherman and another 5 or 6. So, Gerber has been a tremendous boon the the cutler industry. I do really like my Gerber multi-tool I have one of the original ones that actually is a one hander (a lot of the later models were poorly made in comparison). It's great for light tackle fishing. I normally carry a Kershaw 1560 - one handed and it's comfortable. Something (comfort)I can't find in a Benchmade which is technically superior but not useful to me.

Try the Benchmade Griptilian its a very good fit in the hand. I also carried the Kershaw Blackout (1550ST) its got the same grip as the 1560. I like both a lot.

I have a Kershaw Vapor that I keep in the car, and it is a surprisingly good knife for 19 bucks. It's an inexpensive knife as opposed to a "cheap" knife, if you know what I mean.

I'm kinda new to knives...started off by buying a $20.00 Gerber...then read that Gerber knives stink...so, moved on to buying a Kershaw Chive....now in researching the knive...I seem to find a wave of sentiment that Kershaws and Gerbers suck because they are made overseas....I found the Kershaw to definetly be better than the gerber (mini fastdraw). I also bought a Kershaw Grant county which was sharp as a razor out of the box!

Anyone share this opinion?

I can't find a small CASE lockback or I'd buy it....just to have one. I prefer smaller knives for carry..I'm a professional so hard to carry anything over 3 inches...don't want to scare the white collar crowd if they see it anyway. Anyone know of a small CASE lockback? 3"or smaller handle.

Nick

Hey Nick - welcome to Bladeforums. Check out the knife testing & review subforum. You will find reviews written by knowlegeable and experienced knife enthusiasts, dealers, manufacturers, and makers! There's a world of good info there. Read some reviews, buy some knives, maybe write some reviews of your own. You can become knowlegeable very quickly by hanging around bladeforums. Have fun.

sbl, come check out the Kershaw sub forum, and you will get confirmation on whether we suck or not.

BTW, we don't suck, far from it.

LOL - Touché Thomas.
(already gave my opinion above. Kershaw is good boogie.)

Own some older Gerbers that aren't going anywhere----no way will I ever buy a newer one.

Own a few Kershaw's---won't be buying any more of those either.

There's just better knives out there to be wasting your money on either of these brands.
