Kershaw Camp 18 fail.

Weird how this knife didn't break with all that cinder block bashing...

Try that with a full size strider with a 7 inch blade or bigger and try chopping with it, then lets see what happens. A small knife like that beng stabbed into concrete when it has the geometry of a prybar should not break.

Regardless, the KErshaw should not have broke where it did. It should have broke at the point of impact if anything. But large blades like that should be HT'd softer and should not crack and fail, but should just indent like most machetes would have done in the exact same scenario.

Oh and anyone that thinks that what the OP did was abuse, well, then they have never used a large blade outside of pictures for the forum.

Why has no one mentioned that this thread should never have been bumped after a year of dormancy just to stir the pot. And some seem to forget cinder blocks have rocks in them. SOOOOOOO, if you hit a cinder block with a machete you very well could have hit a rock in it that will be harder than the surrounding concrete holding it together. Still amazes me though the lack of personal responsibility people have these days. 30 years ago when people broke a tool due to accident they just accepted they made a mistake. Now we see nothing but justification as to why people need not be responsible for their actions.

Someone was probable researching that Kershaw and didn't notice the date. Happens all the time

I know. I just thought it a bit distasteful that after a year of this beast being in slumber it was bumped by someone just so that they could berate what happened over a year ago. Pretty petty. The responses after that IMHO are perfectly warranted as after that initial bump it becomes a current topic again. But the person that brought this to the top just to excercise a bowel movement? Poor form.

So let me get this straight. We are told that we should use the search function, before creating a thread, but then we shouldn't? I posted in this thread because I was searching the forum for info on this blade, as I was considering getting one. There is not very much on this machete, so naturally, the little bit that there is going to get commented on, when someone is in fact looking for information about it.

Hitting a rock with a machete shouldn't really cause any damage that can't be fixed with a few licks from a bastard file.

I think part of the problem is Kershaw couldn't decide quite what to make. The majority of us, I think, look at this knife and think, "Heavier duty machete." But, from the info I've seen, they ran it too hard for that. I suppose they did advertise it as a camp knife, but if I buy a knife that size and shape I don't think you can particularly blame me for thinking it's meant to do similar tasks to just about every other knife that size and shape. And that means hitting rocks and roots and cinder blocks.

Don't see that it matters how the op broke it just looks like Kershaw has some good customer service nothing wrong with that. Probably not the best idea to post about it here though. ;)

I would sure like to see some of that "good customer service" as I am now waiting weeks and weeks for my almost new Thermite to come back either repaired or replaced from a bent/distorted liner.

I looked at the camp 18 online but decided to buy the ontario machete instead !

True story !

I decided to go another route as well. It's between the Tops Power Eagle and Condor Warlock for me now. Or save for a Battle Mistress.

Also, they are called concrete blocks people, not "cinder" blocks! This has to be one of the most annoying misnomers in the construction industry. Cinder blocks haven't been used, or even mass produced, in over 50 years at least. O, and while we are on the topic, it's a circular saw not a Skil saw and a reciprocating saw not a Sawzall. Both of which are brand names, not tool names. Sorry, I find ignorance quite annoying.

Would you care for a Kleenex, er, sorry, tissue?

Actually, it's fairly common for brand names to become common nouns in English. Language evolves and English evolves stupidly fast. No use finding it annoying.

Im not saying the OP lied. But his story changed and has a lot of holes. And having not experienced the problem myself when i combine that with the OPS story, I take it with a grain of salt. Again though, I dont have a problem with your comments or anyone elses except the person who brought this to the top of the heap.

If you want to discuss the knife and the info you want to discuss is pertinent then yes by all means bring it back up and converse. You brought this to the top to say you are no longer considering the knife because of this thread. That is not a contribution that furthers the topic. And even if it did it represented but a fraction of your post. Reading your post you seemed to take more issue with the comments made by supporters of the brand and to bring up controversy with is in anything but short supply around here. And with so little information being available you are going to take everything on the word of a single post made by some dude whos story changed and is a single example of a failure?

That's fair. I didn't pay too much attention to who necroed it, honestly.

That doesn't mean it is OK imo. Deluding the english language is no good for it. This new trend towards brand names and slang becoming words is just ridiculous if you ask me. It's only more western world idiocy. All the dumb hillbillies can't learn big words so we make it easier for them by dumbing it down. It's pretty funny actually. That all doesn't apply to the original cinder block part of my post though. Cinder is the aggregate they used to use in concrete blocks back when coal burning was the norm and there was plenty of it. It hasn't been used in many, many years. For some reason the ignorant carried the name on for 50+ years.

Agreed.

I don't think you can delude the English language, though you may be able to dilute it. You're making prescriptivist language arguments and proper English is NOT a prescriptive language, never has been. Personally, I favor descriptive language as the soul of any language is the ability to quickly make yourself understood. That's why I, and so many others, find it completely acceptable to call them cinder blocks. No one will be confused, everyone will understand and communication will flow freely.

You're essentially placing value on dusty rules that benefit no one, rather than free communication.

I was typing on my phone, auto complete, and didn't notice thanks.

Why continue to use the wrong word though? Just so more people understand it lol? That is a ridiculous way of thinking. Why not educate people so, they don't sound like idiots and use the correct word? You just did it yourself with my mistyped word.

Imo this is one of societies bigger problems. No one wants to do any work. It's easier just to let it go or keep doing it the wrong way. Pacifism, cowardice, and a general avoidance of any confrontation is the norm. People seem to think that if we brush it under the rug maybe one day it will fix itself. It's superdiculous if you ask me. There Websters, you can add that word to the dictionary too. And, I wont even get started on political correctness in society nowadays. I might offend someone because they changed the name again lol.

Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled knife discussion.

Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled knife discussion.

Why not continue to use it? Does it create any confusion or difficulty? As for the work, why wouldn't we want language to be easy? There may be some that avoid hard work, but I don't think making something harder for the sake of it being harder is any kind of answer at all.
