Kershaw Ruby

Ohh...you guys and your fancy problems. ;)

In all seriousness I hope Kershaw figures this out sooner than later. If they insisted on putting the ball back in their court then they should know how to play the game.

It amazes me to read how disappointing it is to sell a light purchased for $510 to be sold at $675 because some other few sold it for more...

Either you like the knife or you don't. We don't always have to think about the monetary value to judge how much the knife is worth to an enthusiasts.

The supply will dry up within the next quarter...then the prices will go the way of the 0600, Tilt, 3600, and 0777....always does.

Supply doesn't dry up if no one's buying. Knives aren't perishable goods, after all. Unless people start buying, supply remains the same.

"The prices will always go up."

Sounds like the housing market before the crash! Prices don't go up unless demand is greater than supply. By selling directly to consumers through the internet, Kai took out most of the legwork that would've needed to been done otherwise to find the knives at whatever retailers were selling them. Whereas it used to be that high elasticity buyers could wait until the knives hit the internet at a higher price to buy instead of having to call twenty places to see if they carried the knife, they can now buy directly off the site. A high elasticity buyer by definition is going to be willing to give up more for the knife(whether that be money or time), and so likely managed to get one off the website. The remainder of high elasticity buyers are pretty quickly gone from the market when the first few secondary market knives hit the internet. Past that, it's all medium and low elasticity buyers, and as such, they're content to wait down the line as suppliers want to recoup costs instead of making significant profits.

Using the ZT 0454 as an example again, a lot of ZT 0454s that didn't go to high elasticity buyers went to resellers. At this point in time, a lot of ebay ZT 0454s have left the market, waiting until the price rises. This means that there's a lot of supply held in waiting, and so when the low priced ZT 0454s finally sell and price creeps back up again, there's going to be another flood of supply and therefore another supply/demand stalemate. But, seeing as most high and medium elasticity buyers would've likely had the knife by now(assuming no freak influx of really rich knife enthusiasts), we're left with the people who want the knife but-not-that-much... And back to the low prices we go.

With a more popular knife like the ZT 0454, you can probably expect it to rise in value if you hold onto it for a couple years(though who knows how much interest, and therefore demand, diminishes in that time?) after all the rising and falling is over and true supply lowers, but with a less popular and more controversially liked knife like the Ruby... I wouldn't count on it.

I don't claim to be an expert on this, but that's how I see it, anyway. If the Ruby does go to 1k+, then I'll eat my words and be happy that I got one!

I think the system works fine. The server is always gonna lag with that much traffic. And when you have that many ppl trying to add a small amount of any product...there is gonna be problems. They'll never be able to stop that. Atleast ppl couldn't buy a knife three hours after it actually sold out. I'm sure that's the issue KAI was concerned with this time around. And KAI seemed to fix that.

Well I understand initial problems but they should be able to figure out a solution that doesn't repeatedly involve equipment malfunction resulting in unhappy (potential) customers.

That is so very true overall. They should have stress tested a demo environment that simulates various sizes of traffic, situations, etc. Before a critical knife launch, one would think that a ton of testing would be done to prepare for a 'high traffic' special event. I think both the 454 and Ruby have definitely been very far from bug free and it is only going to get worse now that the Ruby is out of the way. The only major one left is the 392 and I expect a lot more people trying to get that beauty over the other 2. Heck, it could be more traffic then the last 2 combined, so lets hope they learn some things and prepare for the next event a bit more.

Still though, they are not an IT/web hosting company. They are a Knife company. And one of the best out there, if not the best IMO, so please keep on building your fantastic knives. I am 2 for 2 and hopping to make it 3 for 3 with the 392 : D

I highly doubt that would have been possible in the past where I had to chase dealers, try and snag preorders, visit as many knife sites as possible non stop for days on end, etc. That whole process was just awful so I appreciate the new way, even with the faults that clearly the community is experiencing.

Touché :)

Guys, KAI links to Shopatron. They aren't handling the purchase process. They just fill the orders Shopatron takes.

Then Shopatron, being in the business of online commerce, ought be able to pull their heads out of their asses for a small-scale online sale and make a website work for 5 minutes.

I'll be trying again for the 0392. I'm not disgruntled against KAI. Still, it is frustrating.

Being a realist, while keeping it away from pessimism and optimism, based on my contacts with both KAI USA and Shopatron yesterday, my order for a Kershaw Ruby 4040 says "Shipping soon" and my CC was charged. I have no idea on the if and when! I'll know I have one when I can actually hold it in my hand! Later...

Anyone have any new details on orders that were able to be completed? Maybe a shipping e-mail or something similar?

I have not received anything new on my end since last Thursday.

I did receive an order confirmation at 18:05 on Thursday and my order status changed from "Processing" to "Shipping soon" on Friday. I checked with Shopatron earlier this morning and they said it should ship out today or tomorrow and the fulfillment of the order is out of the KAI warehouse in Oregon. Once shipped they'll send an email like "Your Kai USA_US order has shipped!" and it will include UPS Tracking. So, give it until end of day tomorrow.

Thanks RamZar! Yeah, that is what I have as well. I figured they would send another e-mail before the actual shipping e-mail is sent out with the tracking number

Based on my past experience with KAI/Shopatron there will only be two emails. One to confirm the order and another when it has shipped. For the in between order status check your order status on Shopatron and your payment via your payment processor. Also, last time it took three business days for the order to ship and another three business days for the package to get from Oregon to Southern California. East coast will take longer to transit.
