Kershaw Tyrade's in black G-10 are here

Crap, I was trying to be happy with my JYD CB. Thinking it's really close to the same size with the same steel and then I started reading this thread with people talking about the orange one, and comparing it to the ZT line. Then darn if I didn't just order one from KW.

You did a good thing Flashpoint, an honorable thing!:D

Its funny you mention this - I was kinda thinking when this knife was in the discussion stages, its release is going to hurt sales of the JYD II CB...I mean I know there are some differences, but IMO, not enough to warrant one if you have the other.

Lucky for me, I don't have a JYD II CB...so I am looking foward to my Tyrade G10 :)

It might hurt some sales short term, but with all three handle materials being limited editions, and the total being produced at less than 1400 pieces total, you probably will not see all that many of them. I get that total from what I've read of 900 black, 300 tan, and 150 orange being the numbers produced, and If those numbers are correct, then I guess that means around 1,350 original Tyrade blades didn't make the cut on the blade etch.

I never heard anyone say exactly why these blades failed the blade etch QC, but I quess the CPMD2 didn't turn out to be dark enough to contrast against the 154CM steel. But I should be finding out in person in just a few more hours!:D

My Tan Tyrade will get a vinegar patina when it arrives, and be one pile of sexy beast. :D

Tyrade is in the house! UPS dropped it off about an hour ago. I can honestly say that Kershaw has outdone themselves with this one. My first impression was the heftiness and my little scale tells me about 7 ounces for the weight. Other measurements include a .156" blade, liners at just under .080", and G-10 scales at about the same thickness as the liners. Total thickness is just over a half inch at .540", and it is nice and flat. The blade finish is nicely done and is a flat gray in color. The pivot has p-b washers and the blade opening is very, very slick and hard hitting. Of course I tuned mine down as I tightened the pivot to my liking. Lockup is really excellent with the liner engaging just to the right and leaving about half of the blade tang to handle any liner wear. blade grinds are even on both sides and the edge just pops the hairs right off. I only have a single complaint and it concerns the pocket clip. I was hoping for something the likes of a ZT like clip with a bit higher mounting. Now this is really a personal preference and it may not be a problem for most. It is set up for tip down and tip up though, and I am sure STR could whip up something to my liking. As it stands about 3/4" of the handle sticks out beyond the clip when mounted tip up, but it is a narrow 3/4" sticking out. The tip down carry allows about 1/2" of handle to stick up, but it is nearly twice as wide. The clip itself is fairly long and has the spoon shape so common to many Kershaws. All in all I am tickled with this knife and as I said earlier, Kershaw has really outdone themselves! These knives are going to be hot!

It was my understanding that they used up all the handle material and there were blades left over.

Funny that you say it rides high. Unless they made a foldover pocket clip, there isn't enough handle material to mount the clips higher. I'm fine with the tip down leaving about 1/2" because it's minimal and I like it.

Hey 2B. I got that info from the original post Thomas made back in Feb. Not a thing wrong with the steel or the construction method, I guess it was just the color contrast. I am posting from my phone, but I will try to link that when I get to an actual pc. The more I sit here and play with this knife, the more amazing it is that Kershaw is selling them so low. I honestly believe if I knew nothing about this knife and walked into a store where it was in the case at $175 or so, I would buy without hesitation! Truely awesome, and the clip complaint will not stop me from carrying it. I will cover the clip withe 3M tape I like to use, and I will happily carry it! Can't wait for my orange and tan to get here now.

I recall reading about the Vinegar dressing and the composite blade - what does it do again? And what steps are need to be take to accomplish this?

You've got to eat a lot of pickles. Hope you like green steel. ;)

Here is the quote Thomas W. posted about the blade etch not passing QC. Nothing wrong with the blade physically, just the light/dark etch contrast.

Ok, here is the deal, these blades originally didn't pass QC because the etching wasn't perfect on them. They were scheduled to go into the original Tyrades.

It's either this finish, bead blast them, or we scrap them.

As far as the scales, we have the G-10, the liners would be fairly easy. We could keep the price at a minimum this way, and still have top notch materials.

The " It's either this finish...." refers to the stonewash finish.

So they took lemons and made lemonade.

The outcome is another Kershaw offering of a fine knife at half the price of the other guys. I like it.

I can't believe it, I never do this, I impulse bought today. A Black G-10 version. Looking forward to seeing this thing in real life. Definitely going to be the beefiest folder I have to date. Can anybody compare the liners to another Kershaw? I have handled the JYD2 and seen the considerable thickness of those, is the Tyrade as thick? I had really been leaning towards the new lightweight Presidio in 440c. But the price was near the same for that wicked composite blade and G-10 over Noyyl GTX kind of clinched it for me.
Thanks,
K

Crom, The liners mic out at .076", and are the same as the ones on the JYDII. The blade of the JYDII is about .123" thick, but the blade on the Tyrade is .156" thick. Side by side you can really see the difference between the blades and their respective thicknesses. The G-10 handles are the same thickness, if not a tad more than the lines, so this makes for a nice handful of knife at .540" thick overall, but the flatness helps it ride unnoticed in my right front pocket. I don't think you will be dissapointed at all!

Btw, another thing I noticed on this knife that I have not seen Kershaw use before is; the screws that bolt the entire knife together are the three along the top of the spine. These screws go from one side to the other and there are screw inserts in the G-10 handles that the screws tighten into. Never noticed any Kershaw with these before, but with a fiber backstrap this is the only way to get the knife together and to get it tight.

I'm still blown away with this thing. I was not going to edc it today due to the clip allowing more handle out of pocket than I'm used too, but then said the heck with it and carried it anyway! I did get to cover the clip with some of the 3M Stair Step tape I like to use on my clips and that made some difference and the 3/4" of the back handle that is sticking above the top of my pocket really is not all that noticeable being thin as it is. I have it set for tip up carry.:thumbup::D

Did it come with the Kershaw pouch? What's the purpose of the tape?

Mine arrived this morning. It came in the Kershaw box with plastic wrap around the knife. No pouch.

This is a massive folder, just the way I like them. It's on a level with my Chinook III, although it is more of a match for the Manix by blade and handle shape.

ohh man i can't wait for mine...how does this compare size with a 0200?....anybody have both?....ryan

Cutter17, thanks for all the info. If you are able to upload some pics that'd be great. One (ok, 2) last question, is the clip the same as on the Ti version
and did it come with the zipper pouch?
thanks,
k

Dang, just saw Esav's comment on the sans pouch, sorry!

Just got mine this AM; great way to end the week!
Opens fast with a bit of kick and an extremely satisfying 'click', locks up solid, very sharp, very nice overall!

It's now riding in my front pocket, and I can't wait to use it on something.
I hope none of the enginerds I work with tries anything funny today.

I'll post or add to a review in the appropriate sub-forum after I've had a chance to carry it for a bit.

:D
