Kershaw Volt anyone?

The CPM-D2 is not the cutting edge in either the Volt or the Speedform.

Oh darn.

It's a european version of 20CV.( the same way RWL 34 is the same as CPM 154) An excellent steel made famous by Rick Hinderer in his XM-18. SOG has a team leader fixed blade in this steel.

It's in most updated steel charts listed as 20CV. A bit more wear resistance than S30V, not as much as S90V. Good stuff all around.

The El-Max I've seen the chemical makeup in it, but I'm not experienced with it's performance.

Now that sounds interesting.

What might be the purpose of using such a high quality steel (CPM-D2) for the spine of a blade? It seems like it would just increase production costs unnecessarily. I doubt that it provides an aesthetic improvement over other lower costing alternatives. Is there a utilitarian advantage?

My take on it is when you make a top shelf Martini, you use Cerignola olives. Not the ones in the gallon jars from the bulk grocery store.

It probably has something to do with the bonding technique Kershaw uses.

There was some mention of having to find compatable metals for the edge steels.

CPM-D2 is probably one steel they had around that allows a proper bond.

It is definitely because of the bonding process, not all steels bond. You have to use compatible steels from what I've been told.

Whether you end up liking the Volt or not they will definitely be hits.
CB Blade with a CB handle, 2 different steels and titanium and G-10. 5 yrs ago I would have never thought it possible.

Pieces have been cut and are currently being cut. In time for Christmas? Maybe

Got one of each of the Volt and Speedform on pre order. I am don't think I've been this excited for the release of knife before letalone two. I'm definitely jazzed to get these.

One site already has them for $126 (no backorders accepted) with an all Ti handle listed. Arrival date 1/1/2010. Hopefully the price will be around $140 in general. Have been on a waiting list for this one since it won the Knife of the Year Award. Are they all Ti or a G-10 inlay? I have seen both versions in print in numerous places.

I wish they were free. Sadly, no.
I hope they stay above the $150 range. Cutting them too cheap is not good.
Besides, buying cheap isn't always the best route. Take a look at the GB&U and Hall of Shame here.

Oh man, the Cadre is sweet too! Thanks for the pics. I haven't personally been as taken with the Speedform, but I bet my mind would change if I could get one in my hand. The handle looks a little reminiscent shape-wise of the BM AFCK, which I know a lot of people like even though it looks funny to my eyes with the big choil back from the blade.

I hear you on the pricing, even though it is hard not to go for the cheapest price around, so long as you aren't unduly risking getting shiested by a place you don't know. I really hope these guys are big successes for Kershaw so we can expect more designs in this vein. Maybe they will have some little brothers in the future? I think the Volt and Speedform would work really nicely with blades around 3" too, more like sweet gents knives. Keep it up!:thumbup:

Are you referring to the Speedform? Sounds like it with a lower price and all Ti handle....oh, and the knife of the year award :)

All three of these knives look great. Except for the color combinations :barf:
And the OCC logo. double :barf:
Maybe they're will come out with a more normal looking version next year, kind of like they did with the Tyrade. I'd like that a LOT.

Are you talking about the etching? I personally like the color contrast. Now I could be wrong, but I believe the only reason that the G-10 Tyrades were produced without the etching were because the blades that were used for the G-10 line were rejected from use for the Ti version because of an issue with etching those blades. If I'm wrong please forgive my ignorance, but I could have sworn that I heard this.

I believe that the G-10 Tyrades were the only CB blades done by Kershaw without the etching. I thought the ZDP Shallots weren't etched, but after looking at them again it looks like they are lightly etched.

I might have to get a cadre and have some different scales made for it. I don't like the OCC logo, but I really like the blade shape and overall design.
