this is one helluva WiP, Keith!
I'm totally digging the scabbard, it's gonna be sweet!

Nice.....I always used red felt in my wooden scabbards....bought scrapes from the local billiard distributor.

Yes I know its been quite some time since I last posted any more work on this project. Firstly the scabbrd I made ended in the trash, so I had to make another. Secondly, and heres a tip, don't get anything cast in copper. Apparently it is the worst alloy to use when casting as it oxidises at melting point, along with other nasty problems. I know this as we had to get three sets cast, first two had porosity all over the place, finally the last cast was a bronze alloy that came up trumps. Live and learn they say. I will say that it is complete, finished, caput and all done :)

So here is the final chapter (at last)
I made the scabbard out of White Beech, its fairly soft so I gave it multiple coats of supa glue. Hardened up nicely.

Time to overlay the scabbard with some leather, section by section, streching the leather as much as I could.

Here it is all stiched up with a Mokume Gane Chape and a closer look at same. Copper and Sterling Silver in this case and some other pieces for the frog

So now that I have all the handle pices time to start shaping it all.

The reason for the gloves is the spacers are G10 ( horrible stuff to work with) and its bloody cold!
Time for some hand profiling.

Rounding out the spacers

Gotta go for now. Some more later. Thanks again for looking
Cheers Keith

So excited!!!

A little bit of polishing

Handle sanded and coated in Danish oil

Time to peen the tang

All done

Cheers Keith

ps Here are the final specs. BL, 10 1/2" 275mm. OAL 17", 432mm. 0.378", 9.6mm spine at the Habaki. Weighs in at 1 lb 11oz, 750grm.
Clay hardened W2, copper and G10 spacers. Buloke burl handle. Timber scabbard overlaid with leather. Sterling Silver and Copper Mokume Gane Chape and frog fittings :)

Hello Keith!

Brilliant piece and awesome in progress images! More than appreciated!

The scabbard alone is breathtaking! 😮

Can't wait to get my hands on this beauty! :)

All the best,
Alex

Amazing. I have never seen anything like this rendition. Beautiful work, all around.

Thanks for the comments mate. I must admit I wasn't aware of the fact that tradionally the tip is left soft (note to self)
Cheers Keith

This project turned out to be a real head turner. I went back and edited my phone/auto correct nightmare.

I was not critiquing the hardened tip at all. It is what I prefer, especially with a beautiful hamon in mix!

Absolutely crackin' mate! As much as we all knew that this one would be cool when finished, well it's even cooler than expectations. And what a way to celebrate that "rare-as-rocking-horse-shit" buloke burl! And what about that scabbard!
