WOW!!! I am just amazed!!! I'm just starting to get into collecting handmade knives and I think I am in love!!!

I never realized the work and attention to detail that goes into a build like this! JUST WOW!!!

Mark,
Very exciting illustrated story and demonstation of your skills. I am eager to see the happy end. Also a nice add-on for the lucky future owner of this outstanding piece

Hello Mark,
Still tuned in here waiting for the next segment of your informative and out right gorgeous knife build.

I usually reserve the term gorgeous for ladies!;)

I went over the whole blade again, sanding out any scratches and fixing any minor problems. I etched it and buffed it on the muslin wheel. I etched it again lightly and hand rubbed it with 8000 grit paper to highlight the high spots.

Then I made a thick clay with satanite to bed the edge of the blade in to keep from over tempering it. I put some waves in the clay for added interest. There will be a hamon but what will be more visible is the difference in the color of the steel.

Using a propane torch I heated up the blade to an even purple color.

You have to be careful not to over heat the blade.

It's about ready. Extra care must be taken at the tip, because it's thinner, it's easy to overheat.

The true color doesn't show up well in this picture but the "hamon" does. We might need a real photographer to bring out the true colors.

Next, finishing up the guard and butt cap and fitting the inlays.

Thanks for watching.

That's a different technique, Mark. I've seen it done with the edge in water, but never embedded in satinite. I'm assuming that technique would work on plain carbon steel as well, giving a hamon?

I've been following this thread for a while now. It was actually the thread that inspired me to figure out how subscriptions work on this site. And I have to say that I think this has been an absolutely amazing WIP. I mean no denigration of the knife when I say that it is not something that I would want for myself, but whether or not I would want it, the artistry you are displaying with this knife is undeniable. I really think this has been an amazing work to follow, and the knife is truly stunning.

I am sure it would work on all steels, it uses up the satanite but I always have holes in the forge lining that need patching so I just put it in there when I'm done.

Mark, I just went through this thread from beginning to end. It's a real treat to watch your work progress. Great WIP thread and beautiful knife.
