Kiridashis! (and tantos and more) Started up!

Chamfering yesterday morning - the butts on these are angular for knocking stuff/indexing but feel great in the hand because they are carefully rounded off while still keeping the original shape.

Just out of the temper oven - these have all been oil quenched after a 10 minute soak in the kiln at 1525 F. I double temper them for 2.5 hours each cycle for a final Rockwelll of about 59.

I like the angular butt, it's practical and utilitarian. That jimping on the handle of that mystery knife looks good as well.

Thanks! I think the kiridashi I have is my most used knife, I like it for scoring and cutting out material. It will almost cut through kydex on one pass and that stuff is hard to cut through! I used to use a band saw.

Thanks on the jimping. That knife has been a lot of fun. I think the spine is really cool, I have a "compound jimped" area that came out great. This one is an integral handle and would be a great take anything and self defense knife. I think it would work very well on the hip in a reverse position.

LOOKS KILLER! I like the swedge on the ray skin knife. It would be coool if you did a video on how you wrap your ray skin handles. I did my first chisel grind yesterday . I will try to finish it up on sat. HAVE A KILLER DAY!

Thanks! I'm really amped with the way the grind came out on this one!

I'll have to do a video on the wrap itself, good idea. Look up "tsuka-maki" for tutorials but they are mostly confusing and meant for dressier swords.

Cool on the chisel grind! Your grinds are looking good!

Still covered in black compound...

This photo makes them look awful, but hey they will look better in the hand! :D

...one more tanto in progress

This isn't the tanto thread (there isn't one yet) but these are in the batch and are .25" 5160 steel as well.

Hollow to convex grind with hollow swedge... zero bevel chisel with bevel on back for sharpening and ambidextrous use. I'm really proud of the grind on this one, it was a tough one.

West System fabric epoxy soaked!

One of the tantos wrapped in red cord has rayskin and the other has grip tape.

3 in W2 - The smaller black one and the black rayskin/green cord ones are available. I still need to soak the wraps and make the sheaths but they are close.

Quick photos... they look way better in person with a nice polished finish. I'll get better pics when they are finished.

modded pic, I enhanced the color a bit to make up for the bad flash I have

They are looking good Daniel!

Man, I can't believe I almost missed this thread, that reverse tanto is KILLER! I love it and the wharn-ish fighter too!

I have a question for you, do you thin the epoxy you soak the p-cord in before applying it? I usually thin it to almost a water consistency with acetone and it soaks in incredibly well and cures nicely but I haven't really seen anyone else do that.

Cheers

Thinning epoxy is usually up to personal preference, or dependent upon whether a complete soak is desired. I know in the fishing rod building world a complete soak in is not desired, as the epoxy's role is not to hold the guide on, but rather protect the thread that holds the guide on. As well, the guide if damaged would be nearly impossible to remove cleanly to repair if the epoxy soaked through the thread. I imagine in the knife making world a complete soak is desired for the best corrosion resistance.
