KITH, WOO-HOO, my knife arrived

I got my knife today from Mr. Mark Redmon. It is very nice indeed and built like a tank.

Thanks Mark, I like it a bunch. This week end starts the special doe season here in Ok,
I'll give it a good field test.

Greg, I'm glad the knife arrived safely. I was going to check the tracking tonight. Good luck with the hunt! (Nice Ruger btw!)

mrnewberry, I'm glad the package arrived safely and that you seem to have gotten it out of the sheath with all of your digits intact (it was rather a tight fit and I feared I was going to remove a finger when I tried to extract it!)

I tried to give it a 'toothy' edge @ 220x followed by a leather belt stropping, so it may not be super polished and hair popping but my hope is that it will make for a good long lasting utility edge. I sincerely hope you like it and will enjoy using it!

I just recieved a most excellent knife form Mike counts. Thanks Mike. Thanks also to Stacy Apelt for organizing this years event.
The knife is a superb 7" vest bowie of ATS 34, HT by Bos with a stacked spacer guard and a 30 year old walnut handle. Mike says there are flaws but I cant find any. Looks flawless to me. Perfect fit and a mirror finish you could shave by.
He also included a couple handle blocks, wow what a great gift. Thanks!

I received my knife today from Greg Shahan and all I can really say about the knife is WOW!!! What a beautiful knife and sheath combo. The knife is a integral made out of w1 with a spalted maple burl handle. The knife has great balance in the hand, the fit and finish is perfect with a razor sharp edge. What a great way to start off Christmas. Thanks again Greg for the outstanding knife.

My knife and sheath arrived also and I couldnt wait until Christmas to open it. Its from Josh Dabney. Its really hard to believe this is only his 5th knife and the first one that bears his "Makers Mark". This is one to keep and cash in on someday when Josh becomes famous. I have admired his work and have been amazed at his talents in everything he persues. The silver wire inlays are nearly perfect and this is only the 2nd time he has done wire inlay work and the first time using silver wire. He made the sheath also which is in itself a work of art.
Thank You Josh! Its my first "Josh Dabney" and I love it.

Very nice Bruce.

Here is mine. It is from Jason Carter, and it is going to be well used. I plan on taking this one camping with me (along with about 3 others) and I expect that it will hold it's own

It is almost as if the person who draws names said "Lets see, who likes hamons...well, Bailey likes hamons, he can get the Carter" It has a nice hamon (which of course doesnt show up in the picture) He also has a feature I am trying to figure out. The bolster is steel of some sort, and it has brazed? onto it a strip of copper or brass, it looks like brass. Either way, I am not sure how he did it and it is cool as heck.

Thanks Jason, it will be well used.

I received a nice gift package from Eric (Munky88). He is a bright young new maker and he mentioned feeling a little bit "out classed" by some of the more experienced makers. Apparently there weren't as many newbies this year as last year.

I feel quite proud to own this knife. I remember being his age and I remember making some of my first knives and I feel a great honor owning a piece of this young man's history. I hope there are more new makers next year, and I hope they display as much refreshing natural talent as Eric.

The knife is what I would consider to be a medium sized bush and work utility knife with a properly executed scandi grind ending in a perfectly executed zero edge. It cuts well, and is quite robust. The grip couldn't be more comfortable and functional and I feel the kydex sheath is nicely tuned and well done. The steel is HRC 60 D2, the scales are purpleheart.

There were also a few other goodies included in the gift box that I appreciate very much including a fine firesteel with a custom burl handle.

Eric, thank you for the thoughtful gifts, I'll get a lot of use from them.

Matt I apologise I didn't include a letter with it, it totally slipped my mind. I'm glad you like it! I am a hamon junkie myself! The night before it shipped I was touching it up on a worn 600 grit belt and it slipped ruining the original etch. so I re etched the blade for a few hours in warm vinegar. hense the line on the bolsters lol. they are fire blued 1018 steel, and indeed I did braze a brass glob onto them and then shape them. The handles have 1/64" brass liners and asian honey buffalo horn bark handles from Artworkbid.com. I forged the knife from an 11/16" bar of W1 from Fastenal. I'm not the best sharpener yet. (obviously) but I'm working on it! Let me know how it goes when you use it!

Nathan, glad you got it timley. Was watching the tracking number and it seemed to freeze at the postal depot for awhile. Apparently it went from the depot in Canada to your doorstep in 2 days. Weird.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I'm glad you like it. Go cut something!

Were the instructions for the light clear enough? I can try again if need be.

The knifes are arriving as planned. There are still 9 folks who I haven't heard from that they have shipped the knives, but I think that is mostly due to everyone being busy and not emailing me. If you have mailed your knife and haven't sent me a "I mailed the Knife" email, please send me one.It will help me keep track of the KITH. I sent reminder emails to those who I was unsure of.

So far this method of doing the KITH has run flawlessly. If it continues on schedule, everyone should have their knife by Christmas.

Thanks to all who participated.

I got a nice surprise in the mail yesterday! Mr. Allen Newberry sent me one of his slick little pocket cutlasses. I need to get batteries for the camera on my way home from work tonight, then I'll get a picture up. Thanks Allen!

Got my KITH knife today from Steve Schantz (medtech) and I am stoked to get it. Sorry I didn't have time to take a picture yet but it's coming. The knife I received from Steve is a nice little hunter with cocobolo scales.
My eleven year old son was close by when I opened the box and he immediately claimed it for himself after I explained to him why I was getting a knife in the mail rather than sending it out. I think he is sleeping with it, Steve I may have to get another from you just so I can use it. Thanks to Stacy and everyone who participated, this was a great group project and I am already anticipating doing it again.

I am having difficulty getting in touch with a few KITH participants to confirm the shipping of their knife. If you are one of the below people, or can get in touch with them, have them email or call me.

Thanks, Stacy

I enjoyed participating in my first KITH and I hope this becomes a tradition here in the forum. I'm already thinking about next year's... mostly so I won't have to scramble at the last minute!

Stacy, I really appreciate you handling the details and making this happen this year.

This looks like fun. Next year I HAVE to participate.

Thanks for sharing your pics guys. I especially like the write-up some of you did. It is a morale booster for the less advanced knifemakers I am sure.

WOO-HOO I just got a gorgeous knife from Bart Raeven that came all the way over from Germany to brighten my holiday season! It's a gorgeous blade with a very unique half oak half bog oak handle, with a carved oak-leaf on the back. The sheath is fantastic, molded leather with a suede outside and it holds the blade perfectly. I couldnt be happier! I'll have to take some photos when I get home tonight... right now all my workmates are wondering why i'm bouncing around the cubicles like a kid on christmas morning =).
