Since we haven't had a pet peeve thread in a long time, let's get one started again. So what do you guys dislike that has anything to do with knives?

To start, a few guys here in our area fancy themselves as hardcore, bad**s knife fighters and go around bragging about the knives("tactical" folders) they carry that they don't even use to cut paper. They show it often to their admiring courtiers when they hold court. A year or two later they sell the knives to new and aspiring knife nuts(mall ninja in their case) as like new and unused with matching prices of course.

Are they any good? There's a lot of good kali/eskrima pratitioners where you're from? They must not be from the tone of your post, but I'd be leery (personally) on calling out a knife weilding Filipino.

Some of them probably are. :p

Doesn't make it any less ridiculous to me. ;)

Emerson skull beads and that entire death cult crap.
Chisel grinds on knives like the ones on American kami knives. (Big letdown)

Re-curves, thumbstuds, short thumb ramps, knives without a flipper, kick or finger choil, handle material being passed off as blade steel.

Almost forgot, small blades (anything under 4").

My biggest pet peeve is the general direction the market has been going in: overly thick, tacticool crap that is useless for most things a knife is supposed to do for you. No, I do not live on a medieval battlefield, and if I want to be chopping logs, I will use my $18 hatchet, thank you. Give me a nice, thin, agile slicer that I can use for 1001 different tasks.

Selling 'survival' knives to middle-class suburbia is like selling chastity belts in a brothel. With one difference: the ladies would not be retarded enough to actually buy one!

I can't stand re-curves, combo edges, chisel grinds, "self-defense" oriented mall ninja blades, or skull crusher pommels. And, with some exceptions, If it wasn't made in the U.S.A. I'm not interested.

Sheeple.

Restrictive knife carry laws.

Chisel grinds.

Weak / flimsy lock.

Slick / smooth scales.

Crappy clips.

Really off-centered blades.

Bad edge grinds / burnt edges.

re-curves that are so extreme you cant even sharpen your knife
knives only offered in combo edge/combo edges in general (leatherman!!!)
FRN that isn't properly backed with a liner and the whole knife bends when you use it
knives that are only about 30% actual cutting edge
bead blasted finishes on otherwise awesome knives (kershaw)
overly rough handles that go past the point of grip and are just pain
the fact that sspyderco charges almost 10$ for a new clip
benchmade not making tip up frame/liner locks
tip down only knives
folders with obscenely thick grinds

Yeah, that sums it up pretty good along with a couple others like topics

"the best knife for under $50"

"the best EDC knife for under $50"

"the best EDC knife"

Seems like you've been just waiting for a thread like this :D

Knife:

Serrations of any kind -- they all SUCK
4" long blades that are 3/8" thick, or anything similar to that
Is there REALLY any GOOD reason for a blade thicker than 1/4"? On ANY knife?
Factory produced fixed blades that cost more than most of the custom makers on here.

Knife related:

When someone says "I have $75 to spend on a knife.." and more than half of the recommendations are for knives that cost $125 or more. Yes, ESEE, Busse, Scrap Yard, and Swamp Rat are great, but they ONLY HAVE $75!!!

On the flip side, when someone asks for suggestions and then shoots down every one that is made. Why bother asking then?

Pet Peeve:

People who receive a knife with a minor flaw and immediately have a meltdown and start a thread with an inflamatory title like "[INSERT BRAND NAME] SUCKS!!!", especially when the thread is posted before the poster has made any attempt to contact the seller or the maker's customer service.

+1 on that! That crap happens way too often.

"Experts" who are anything but experts, especially ones who purport to give definitive opinions about knives and steels they've never used.
