Knife carry w/ backpack

I suspect it may not necessarily be the kydex anchor piece Kiah used. Look at the Mike Billman sheath for my NWA (and JK); it just uses webbing screwed right on. I suspect it is either the addition of the stiff snap buckle or the way the webbing doubles up at the attachment point to effectively make it a thicker and therefore stiffer piece of webbing at that point. Try doubling up your webbing all around. My guess is you either minimize the distance for twisting or you make the dangler stuff enough through the vertical to prevent twisting. I'll think about it, just stepping out.

Also, anchor the webbing as high up as you can, while getting the butt to ride no higher than the top off the belt. Shift the center of gravity towards tip end, and minimize the dangler length. That way the handle shouldn't rotate as easily. Now that I think about it, that's probably it. Look at the mbhanzo and Kiahdex sheaths, both have the attachment at pretty much the balance points of the knives or higher. Yours looks like it's anchored below the balance point, and therefore the knife has a tendency to rotate the handle end down because more of the knife's mass is on that end.

ETA: Use the top two rivets on both sides of the knife for your anchor. You're using two of the lower rivets on one side. All that is contributing to the knife rotation. Screw into the top two rivets or make bridge to use those top two rivets, if your webbing isn't wide enough to span both. The NWA works without the kydex bridge on the Kiahdex sheath because he screwed it right into the sheath at or slightly above the balance point. With the Kiahdex sheath, Kiah used the bridge to put the anchor at/above the balance point.

Rainwalker Creations SKDS (stationary kydex drop strip). Attach with webbing, cord, Tek-Lok, etc. He also makes it with a built-in belt loop.

BF members solving the world's problems once again!

I've finally found the solution which works best for me. I implemented a combination of the advice I received here and on Ban's forum. Special thanks to HikerMano, stingray4540 and many others who put themselves up for public scrutiny by posting pictures.

My solution:
Two paracord loops with the leading loop about an inch short than the back. This keeps the knife vertical but gives it enough slack to rock forward when I sit. It also hangs nicely in my pocket (this works in my back pocket as well). And most importantly it leaves the handle just forward of my pack pocket! Love it!

Thanks again!

Yep that is cool. I have never used the para cord but, but have seen others use it.
Man it looks like you got your set up good to go now:thumbup:

on my hunting pack i hook it to my bottom part of a shoulder strap and tuck it back in a space where my hip, bet and pack meet up. its a small little gap that it fits into nicely

Paul Long offers an extended belt loop on his sheaths for backpacks with wide waist belts. I'm trying to paste below a picture of a Busse I carry. I use several of Paul's sheaths, all of which have outstanding design, execution, and materials, as well as reliable knife protection and one-hand deployment. They also don't swing around and make noise.

if you have 95 dollars you can try the hpg recon kit bag. easy access and it would'nt stand in the way of any belts or straps.

I take a large split ring and put on the sheath loop
I take a large inexspensive aluminum carbiner and clip it onto my waist belt
I clip knife with the slip ring onto the carbiner

So the knife rides on the backpack waistbelt clipped on with a caribiner
When I take off the backpack I take off the knife
I wear another carbiner on my pants belt, and it lays flat under the waist belt

I transfer the knife from waist belt to the pants belt

I use a full-size backpack with waist band. In 25 years, I have never really needed quick access to a knife while hiking. For the last several years, my primary knife has been a Fallkniven F1 and it goes into a pocket on the top of my pack. I don't see it until I stop for lunch or my campsite. I usually have a SAK in my pants pocket in the rare case I need to cut something during the hike.

Not a backpack but...

I went to REI and bought two Petzl Quickdraw Runners (different lengths) from the climbing gear area. Opened up the stitching on one end to accommodate my belt and split ring on the other. Works good. You could use a carabiner in place of the split ring.
