Knife Fails!

Dear Son:

Battle swords have been made with stick tangs for millennia. The collective wisdom of the makers and users vs your opinion.

There is no apparent logic to the statement that making a knife in Idaho precludes quality. Is this indeed an effort at a subtle shot at Reeve? If so, check your foot for a wound and bleeding.

Working knives - fixed-blade and folding -- have been made without guards or finger choils for millennia, including in the land where Odin was worshiped The collective wisdom of the makers and users vs. your opinion.

The OPs thread dont get me riled up, (though stating ones location as 'Your six' on a forum full of knife wielders might not be prudent and suggests a certain amount of immaturity. Just kidding - you can take it ;-) ). How ever, I thought the above TL quote well written.

CRKs folders leave me totally cold BTW. I had a Shadow, which I quite liked, but it doesnt look like CR makes those billet knives any more.

Combo edges, sawbacks, and the continued use of the term "blood groove".
This. Especially the 'blood groove' part.

-A lot of Asian farmers would disagree.
-Not my thing but who cares?
-Some European cultures view knives with guards to be boys knives.

The biggest knife fail that I've seen(and have been guilty of) is thinking your preference is the way things should be for everyone.
Oh!? Which European cultures might that be? Im not disputing - merely interested.
In that case, a whole mess of Mora Work knives just got put out of the reach of adults in Scandinavia and else where in Europe....

In northern Europe, a modest-length fixed blade with a guard is commonly called a "Scout" or "boy's" knife. The official knives for Scouts in Finland, Sweden and Norway have guards, even though the boys are taught to use draw cuts.

That was not always the case. Here is the Finn Scout Knife from the 1930's:

TL, Im not disputing that boy(scouts) knives are made thus, but plenty of other (if not the vast majority of) ordinary user knives for ordinary people/adults have some kind of guard these days - also in Europe.

You see that even in Scandinavia (especially Sweden/Norway) and Finland, where the traditional user knife often had no guard. Most Mora knives these days have some kind of guard or at least a small 'bump' to prevent fingers slipping too easily onto the blade.

I very much doubt that you are being looked down upon, if you carry a knife with some kind of guard or that others might consider your knife a kids knife, if it had a guard.

A choil is a small or large notch at the handle end of the blade meant to allow the sharpening of the full length of the cutting edge. . . .it has nothing to do with fingers

If the choil is enlarged to be used to "choke up" for more control what is it called? Common usage seems to be to still call it a choil as far as I've seen.

If your hand slips in a draw cut, a finger guard is of no help. If you are stabbing with a knife without a guard, you are driving the wrong way on the freeway.

I'm talking about hitting a table or something unexpectedly, you know, _accidents_.

"finger choil"

Thanks for answering the obvious. :) My question was for Mr Russell who said the choil has nothing to do with fingers. I assumed there was something else it's supposed to be called when it's there for fingers, like "finger cut out" or "finger choke up point" or something like that. Guess we can just keep calling it a finger choil until wiser minds educate us.

I always thought it was referred to as a sharpening choil on the blade, and then just a choil when it's behind the cutting edge... Hope that makes sense... :)

That's what I always thought too Czech.
I don't see him as a troll at all though.
Many people only like "Full Tang" knives.
Several CRK fans are not a fan of the stamp, he wasn't saying anything about CRK knives or the quality, just that he didn't like the stamp.
And many people prefer a choil or a guard of sorts for extra safety.

So, he's truly not hurting anything, I think people are making a big deal over nothing. I've been here for over two years and people do sometimes get overly sensitive about things that are NOT meant to be a stab at anyone or anything(pun intended). He simply was listing his opinion about things he doesn't like and asked for other opinions. No need to call him a troll.

I think you're alright Odin's Son, you're not hurting anything, just go on with your thread in a mannerly fashion as you have been and you're good to go.

Too late, he's been "sharked".

Bull. I liked the M16. If they made more them with better steel in Taiwan, the whole line would be much nicer.
Wanna buy one? Lol! The M16 is the only knife purchace I've ever really regretted. I can't get it to take an edge. When the edge gets fine enough to start thinking about getting sharp, it chips away and you have to start over.

You posted a picture of a SAK, which is a folder. Since you only posted a pic, I cant deduce your point in regards to fixed Scout, youth or knives for adults with or without guards.

You post is invalid, so here is a duck wearing a Wok on the head (insert appropriate mental pic, as I couldnt be bothered :D ).

This clown has been banned three times here by 3 different moderators. He then proceeded to post poor reviews on my private business on several venues. Time to let his attention seeking threads delve to the depths.
