Knife Fit For a Rock Musician?

Interesting query. Rock'n'roll to me has always seemed like do what you want and make it sweet and who cares.

Either: Jimi Hendrix have-the-finest-Stratocaster-and-then-set-it-on-fire with a middle finger to whoever cares or pull a Cobain and play the hell out of a crappy Japanese Jaguar -and still flip a middle finger to whoever cares.

I guess "rock'n'roll" would be to pick whatever looks and feels cool and to then abuse it as if it were free.

I would probably pick a black blade Benchmade 710 (and scratch the hell out of it opening beers and any other thing I could think to use it for) or a Buck 112fg (and scratch the hell out of it opening beers and any other thing I could think to use it for).

Then make out with one thousand groupies.

Best of luck in your decision. Party on :thumbup:

Depends on the subgenre, and there are enough to make your head spin. Classic rock, I'd say a Victorinox SAK of any kind, Buck 301 or 110, Cold Steel Ti-Lite or maybe a Spyderco Endura SS. Nu metal has me thinking of the Cold Steel Spartan, GI Tanto or Shanghai Shadow. Funeral doom metal puts images of the Spyderco Matriarch in my head.

Anything with a bottle opener!

I suspect a lot of guys love rock and roll, but not many have lived with a band. If I was a rocker, my knife would be something that fit with my instrument. So for a lead singer, I'm thinking inlaid sebbie, or something similar, classy but solid. maybe for a punk band instead of the old style stiletto switch, I'm thinking custom emerson. For the guitarist, depends on the ax, a strat guy is going to carry something like a razel, sharp corners and mean, where a tele guy is going to carry something long and slim. A bassist is going to be looking for a big ZT or SOG, like a pentagon2 something that goes bang when the blade lands, maybe an manix2 XL. Drummer is going to carry a multi, since he's gotta be building that kit. but they also carry a stick bag, so I'm thinking a Gerber mk2 in there.

I don't think rockers are going to go for the mall ninja stuff, you spend that much time picking pedals and skins, its about how things work, not what they look like. Those guys pick gear for a reason. Party rockers are going to carry pretty knives, while the punks are going to be looking for weapons. You know those black metal guys all just carry short-swords or smatchets anyway! Grunge rockers might carry more utility sorts of blades, but I'm thinking it would be something like a delica or endura. just something to get the job done. I'll bet Lemmy would have carried a Buck110 for a long time, maybe in one of the fast opening belt sheaths, but I can also see him being a knuckle duster kinda guy. Even theatrical rockers like GWAR might carry something from a Kit Rae catalog, but I wouldn't be surprised if they sprung for live blades. Might look silly, but don't argue with the result. The only band I can see carrying cheap gas station knives is KISS, and only because Gene Simmons would have had his face painted on them! And the Nerd-core guys are carrying Vics and LMs, along with enough LED lights to run half the show!

Asian Fender Squiers & Gibson Epiphones exist coz they're at most 1/2 the price & at least 3/4 the quality of the USA items.

I would get something like Case backpocket perhaps.. Maybe a bit towards country, but still more rock than modern folder. Just my opinion. :D

I believe Axl Rose has a custom XM24 wharnie so how about a Hinderer XM with some steel flame bling?

I just saw that the price limit was brought up later in the thread not in the OP. I'll have to think

Well a certain Emerson would not be too far off the mark as it was influenced by Keith Richards, the Gypsy Jack. I'm a rocker myself toured from 1999-2008, I carry a Southern Grind Bad Monkey. R.I.P one of the Kings of rock n roll Lemmy!

Some knives worthy of re-mentioning. Benchmade 710, Boker Kwaiken, Cold Steel Ti-Lite (find an aluminum one, if you can, or even the old Titanium one).

Some new ones to add: Gerber Applegate Fairburn Combat folder, Any Benchmade Balisong, preferably with a pocket clip, even the old trusty Buck 110, if you get the Cabela's version with black S30V blade.

I remember Ted Nugent was quoted as saying that one of his favorite knives is the Victorinox Farmer SAK.

My older brother isn't a rock star, but he has been a rock musician (guitar) since the late 1960s, and still plays gigs in local cover bands to this day. The only knife he carries is a Victorinox Classic SAK that I gave him.

Although country singer Blake Shelton isn't a rock star, his favorite knives are Case pocketknives.

I've read that David Crosby likes carrying custom folders.

Leather Jacket and Flannel Shirt...

Chuck Taylors and Ray Bans....

I'd say you need a titanium framelock, bearing pivot, VG-10 steel, only a couple ounces so no weighing him down...

This cat's got Boker Urban Trapper written all over him.

What rock star budget is $125? I am confused.

Are you a rock star, are you trying to find a budget knife that you think a rock star would use?

I think the only constant here would be that these popular stars pride themselves on trying to be unique and wacky. Therefore trying to narrow down what a whole class of rich people trying to strive to stand out would use as a tool would be very difficult. Most probably have cooks, nannies, tour managers, roadies and security that set up their daily stuff for them. They probably dont open many boxes for themselves, or pick out their own clothes and makeup for that matter.

When I tried to search for more pics for your thread last night 99% of pics related to celebrity knife photos had to do with plastic surgery. That should be very telling. On a side note, OJ Simpson is selling an apparently very valuable knife at an auction for 5 million...

As a drummer playing rock and jazz, gigging locally and small tours, my favorite knife to take along was a Benchmade 940-1.

Depends what kind of rock... for 80s heavy metal/thrash metal, go with the biker's classic, the Buck 110. For prog rock, something elegant and over-engineered, most ZTs would fit the bill. And for black metal, I think an axe would be more appropriate.

Sticking to the price range - my vote would be an Emerson CQC7 or a mini cqc15 if you can find one in your price range. They seem to fit the bill IMO.

My brother-in-law has been a professional musician for 40 years. He currently carries a small Leatherman when on tour. Before that it was an SAK.
