Knife flaws that bug you the most?

Blade play really annoys me, and I'm also very displeased when I receive a dull knife. Kershaw, Spyderco, Cold Steel, hell, even MTECH of all companies sharpen their knives at factory, so when I get a knife that's dull out of box I find it quite annoying.

Pocket clips that look like an afterthought, in placement and design. Why would you want a sharp point on a pocket clip?

Poorly executed and uncomfortable pocket clip, blade centering.

The DOC is a knife I would have loved if it weren't for the stupidly uncomfortable pocket clip - and I had the one with the REVISED pocket clip. Still uncomfortable. Try again, Microtech. You can precision machine fantastic knives, heat treat with the best of them, put crazy yet functional grinds into a blade, make very comfortable and well-designed handles, but you can't get pocket clips right for the freaking life of you. The DOC is still uncomfortable and the Whaleshark's pocket clip, while slightly less problematic, isn't mounted flush to the otherwise very smooth and streamlined handle. It seriously looks like an afterthought, and continues to several versions later.

Off centered blades drive me crazy, I cant stand that. It is just as easy to center the blade so why not do it? Blade play is also a big irritant, I am fine with very slight play but anything more than that is unacceptable, once again theres no reason to not make it the right way the first time. I am very picky about F&F, quality and country of origin (mostly usa but japan is another favorite) so if those essential things are missing then the knife is worthless to me.

Just to add on I hate blade play as well and the blade not being centered doesn't really bug me unless it's to the point where the blade scratches and scrapes on the liners I can't stand it when I'm opening the knife and you can just feel the blade grinding against everything

Edited to add: the few here trying to bust people's balls for only wanting to buy made in the USA blades and for the idiot who thinks that's racist can eat a dick.

Lock my account if you want.

Fng out

I'm glad that I've learned early on in my time here that this forum is just like any other gun/knife/gear forum out there. I'll keep my opinions to myself from now on and just read so as not to be called out for only wanting a made in the USA blade...heaven forbid

I feel you, I mean me myself I don't care where it's made but that's me and if you only like USA made knives then there shouldn't be an issue with that it's your personal opinions and preferences and you are entitled to them wether anyone likes it or not

I like the part where you gave the mods permission to lock your count. That was my favorite part. :)

Knive pet peeves? In order...

- Terrible clips. Crazy wowy zowy extreme looking, high riding, poor tension.
- Tip down carry only. I ignore knives completely if this is the only option.
- Blade play. Seriously, right out of the box?

I will never understand this.. Dullness is not a flaw!! It's a knife!! They are meant to get dull.. If they don't your not using them.. And isn't that the point?

It's like saying a car with less than a full tank of gas is flawed.. Learn to sharpen your knives and maybe it won't be such a "flaw"

A dull knife that is brand new is definately flawed imo; it means the manufacturer didn't think enough of his customer to provide him with the quality
he has paid for. Would you like to pick up a brand new car with the needle on empty?

Lets put it this way when do you expect a shirt, pants, phone, gun etc to be their best? When it's brand new

I disagree with every example you gave. I like my shirts and pants most when I have worn them in a little, so that they soften up slightly and conform to my body more. My phone gets better and better with every system update. Guns tend to settle into a higher level of accuracy once you put a few hundred rounds down the pipe.

And for knives? Every knife I have ever had gets better when I get the chance to break it in, clean it, lube it, sharpen it, or modify it. I have never held a knife and thought "Yup, that's perfect. There's nothing I would change about it."

Have you tried the mini matrix? It's one of my favorite pocket clips!

Too small. Anything at 3" or under is pretty much a pass for me. The only current exception is my Tuff Lite and a possible future exception is a SJ-75 that I'll probably get if I ever lose or finally wear out the Tuff Lite.

Chances are that I'll just get another Tuff Lite, though. Truly, one of the best cutting tools I've ever handled, and at a price you can't argue with.

Not everything listed below qualifies as a flaw but they are knife related annoyances.

1) Chinese knock-offs. The people who make them should die screaming in a car fire.
2) late lockup on liner locks
3) Titanium being advertised by the ignorant as an indestructible material from the gods.
4) Blade centering issues.
5) Sticky lockbars.

This year they should be releasing the full size matrix, so maybe you'll get a chance to experience it anyways :) The tuff lite is the only cold steel I've ever considered buying, I may have to get my hands on one of those...

Bpeezer that's your opinion and we could go back in forth with each other but at the end of the day what everyone thinks is totally different from others and if that's what you think than by all means Stick with it no issue with that

Agreed  I know plenty of people with your mindset, and plenty of people with my mindset.

You won't regret it. It feels like a natural extension of my hand. I had several co-workers comment about me having the knife open in my hand while I was doing other things - I never cut myself or accidentally cut anything else with it, though, while doing that. It just fits so well, and is the only knife with a choil that I really like at all.

Yeah, I've experienced a full-size matrix. It was a ZT 0777M390.
