Knife Fondling?

I don't know that anyone sees a point in it. It's just something (or nothing) to do. I admire my knives the way I might admire a sunset, or the view out my window. Beats a poke in the eye.

I relate it to a sort of nervous tick of sorts I guess. Just like a person that repeatedly clicks a pen, over and over.

Except clicking a pen isn't fun/satisfying like a knife is. Clicking a pen over and over is a habit or a tic, but opening and closing a knife to enjoy the craftsmanship isn't weird. Not all of us get to use our knives often so it's better than just having them sit around.

I got the disease bad. It's usually my Buck Vantage small. What are flippers for? Also my Buck 444 lock back. It's more of a challenge with a knife like that.

Opening and closing a knife one handed engages the same part of the brain that likes to flick pens, zippo lighters, balisongs, roll coins between their fingers, spin kung fu medicine balls, etc. For some people, holding an object in hand helps their mind focus.

I getcha. I don't flick my knife as much as I tend to just hold it closed in one hand while I'm reading through a thread or watching TV. I may open it now and then, but usually slower and more methodically than I might if I was actually going to use it. For me, it's much more akin to still holding the TV remote even though you haven't changed channels in over an hour.

:D that makes much more sense.

Just went out back and took a picture of both knives I've been fondling while on BF, the Les George Rockeye and McGinnis Limiter.

The Limiter seems to always be in my hand because of how fun it is to flip open. The detent is unlike any, not letting the knife deploy unless it's going to rocket out. Gerry is a master at making the perfect detent for a flipper.

The Rockeye is my "go to" knife for those harder use tasks, and has handled them all quite well. A favorite of mine and one of the only customs I've kept from the past 6 months of buying and selling.

Spinning my deluxe tinker on the desk, then spinning a smaller SAK on top of deluxe tinker.

I don't fondle knives. If you want to call me a liar, so be it. But I don't. One hand is almost petting my bull mastiff.

What Knife are you playing with as you read and post on the forums? I know you're holding one, and if you're not you're a dirty liar :D
I'm typing one handed and flicking open and closed my new Doug Ritter Mini Griptilian.
My new large Sebenza. I can't seem to put it down.

This one today, next to me on the couch while on my tablet and at my laptop:

I find it fascinating that it exhibits one of the smoothest pivots I've ever experienced, including my Ripple and ZT560. It feels utterly frictionless. Weird!

Amen. I've played with my Manix 2 LW more than any other knife, probably. Mine is also just *crazy* smooth, and that BBL is just way too much fun too mess with. Only knife I still consistently flick anymore rather than open conventionally.

edit:

Actually, you've got it. My appreciation has matured a bit, and I'm not quite as flick crazy as I used to be. I definitely find myself simply holding and occasionally--and as you said, methodically--opening them while I'm reading or talking on the phone.
