Recommendation? Knife for a Police officer

^ someone barely beat me to it

But my first suggestion would be an Al Mar Eagle Ultralight - though it pushes your budget $25 Damn good, classic knife.

Second would be an Mcusta, MC12, can be found for around $100

I have personally dealt with the owner of the company - good knives out of Japan.

Boker makes a few offerings in that prices range..but honesetly, (sometimes) i wish i was an L.E.O just so i'd have a utilitarian excuse to use and carry a Spyderco Police.

GOVX is a popular website but if you do some digging (google) - there are countless manufacturers that offer discounts, albeit not advertising it. For instance winkler knives gives 25% off to le/military .

Oh, the discounts I know about, but you also said they would customize handle materials at no cost. Who does that?

I've got a cop buddy who's into knives. His daily carry is a plain Jane Delica. He does occasionally carry one of his multiple Spyderco Lum Tantos or a Spyderco Stretch.

A simple phone call is all I’ve had to do. I have not received gold inlay engraving or ivory scales but if a reasonable request is made they are more obliged to assist - common business sense if they want to stay in business. Remember we are profit and they have the overhead....

The question is who did you call? I have literally never heard of any manufacturer or dealer offering a service like this. The closest I can think of is the customization options that Benchmade and Buck offer on a few models, but they certainly don't do that for zero cost.

I can certainly vouch for the Viper Ten. Great smooth knife and flips like butter... canvas micarta available in a few different colors as well. Stretch the budget a bit, but if you Shop around you can find deals. When I got mine collectorknives.net had a really solid and competitive price.

The Mcusta Tactility is an awesome bet as well.

If budget is pretty tight, I'm about to buy a Kilimanjaro Winkler DW for myself:

Because I've had nothing but good results from their cheaper line stuff that uses 7cr13mov. One of the better quality budget companies I've encountered, and I've owned 3 now, (and still own 2). I'd love to see what they do at the next level. I'd love to try Aus10 steel. And I'd love to own a "Winkler" without spending $3-400+...

*I also own the Kizlyar Vega, which is a very robust liner lock with an awesome blade profile that has held up extremely well with everything I've thrown at it over the past 2 years as a work knife. It's tip down if that matters to your friend, My only complaint was the micarta was a little roughly finished in the drill holes. Easily cleaned up with a small round file though..

I have gifted a lot of folders for law enforcement officers. What I have found is quite logical. For the most part, they already have a knife...that they like. A "good" aka expensive knife in not desired since it may be dipped into all sorts of bad goo in the course of a day's work. For those beginning (broke) officers who are walking around with a five-dollar piece of junk, perhaps a Spyderco Endura is a good choice. Nothing too fancy; nothing too expensive.
