Knife for Afghanistan

Another knife I like a lot is the Scrapyard War Dog. It's a beastly tough knife and very light weight and versatile.

Contact Randall, as an active duty person you can get one pretty quick. Options are limited in that program but you'll have a solid knife if you want a Randall. I did that program and took a #15 with me to OEF.

Nothing against the other suggestions, it is a lot of personal preference.

I've been reading this thread for a few days now. I guess I wouldn't be willing to lose anything more costly than an SRK and don't really imagine I'd enjoy humping it around much. It's not likely to leave you hanging. How many guys said to themselves "Damn, if only I had the Winkler I'd be able to do XYZ."?

Carry the SRK on deployment and leave the Randall at home to "heirloom" to your kids. Just tell them you dug foxholes with it- they likely won't fact check you.

I've been deployed once. That was a spelling issue on my part. I mean in general in use I've never had a rust issue.

So, a spelling and grammatical issue, then. After all, with one deployment, you'd have said "on my previous deployment" or "on a previous deployment", instead of "on previous deployments".

It's ok, a completely common error.

I am thinking that a decent folder (Benchmade, ZT, Cold Steel etc) might be the ticket or just a plain Jane SAK. You don't want something that is worth a truck load of money out there in the middle of the boondocks. If I had a penny for all the "lost" gear in the military I'd be sitting pretty and then some. Some baby wipes would be much more desired and useful than a high priced Randall out in an area where all water has to be trucked in.

Consider the weight issue...although an ASHBM might be cool to use, the mass of said blade would be prohibitive. I have an ancient five inch blade by Kinfolks which would be a slicer and a half in a pinch. I believe I gave about forty bucks for her if memory serves...and she is light enough to carry all day/night.

Buck 110?

Get something that looks badass. Something talismanic.

Check out the busse sales subforum here on the exchange to find something that fits your personal taste. There’s a lot of good/great ones at or below your price range, and infi will do whatever you need it to do. If you don’t have one already, a leatherman 200, wave, rebar or even the smaller pst (lightly used) are great and useful, in addition to a nice, if even slightly used(pre-tested) busse or swamprat or scrapyard knife.

You want a 6" fairly rugged knife? Just today I ordered a Cold Steel SRK with the SK5 steel for $35. Yeah, the glass-filled sheath looks good but can/will dull the blade. But it's a beater and no great loss if it disappears. I prefer slightly thinner blades, but it is a bargain.

My son carried a Boker Applegate-Fairbairn dagger in Iraq, but they were cheaper back then. I don't think he really used it, just made him feel good. I was lucky to get it back after he was killed. A 3-4" fixed blade (some ESEEs are nice) and a SAK or some pocket knife would be far more useful day-to-day.

I'm the CMFTW knives guy. I was 11C/B in Mosul 03-04. I can build you a bitchin combat/utility for well under your budget.

This is what I built for myself. It's on my hip right now.

Well That is just Outstanding of you Charlie Mike:thumbsup: I for one was not in service therefore I have no useful input for you Slayer but I would like to say Thank You for your service and thank you all who have served. Remember to take lots of pics to show your future kids.
