Recommendation? Knife for dad's bday

You can order it from Ontario's site, just toggle the choices to "Coyote Brown" and "Serrated" The Photo doesn't show but if you put it in your cart it will show "Coyote Brown Serrated".
There are other sites but forum rules don't allow me to post the links.
I'm gonna go with the Ontario rat w serrations. Thank you all very much, I got great recommendations, I'll probably come back here whenever I need one for myself hahaha
Thank you!!

For my use, I prefer the D2 for edge retention. It is not as easy to sharpen as aus8, but that is what I would pick.

There are also great options from. Spyderco and others in that price range.

... Same question about the RAT, how long do they last, if used as I mentioned above?
Thank ya!!

In this price range, some of the highest quality comes out of China. While there are serious problems with the Chinese government, remember that there are some good Chinese companies staffed by honest and talented Chinese people. Civivi arguably offers the best value in the price range we're discussing here. Definitely take a look through the current list of Civivi knives at BladeHQ. If you see anything you like, don't hesitate to try it out. BTW, I won't be the first to question the need for partial serration. I moved on from that well over a decade ago and ended up never missing it for EDC. Is there a reason your dad needs it?

The Ontario Rat knives are made in Taiwan. Based on my experience, they are well-made and reasonably durable. The blades are thin and slicey. While they don't have the "drop shut" action of the Civivi knives on bearings, the manual action snaps open beautifully due to the geometry. My main complaints are that I don't love the overall aesthetics, I prefer a deep carry clip, and the jimping on both the thumb ramp and lock bar is a little sharp.

As far as steel, I actually prefer the AUS-8 Rat. There is a lot of hype involved in budget D2. Edge retention tends to fall short of the hype and that can make it a poor trade-off versus more challenging sharpening and less resistance to corrosion. Based on independent testing, Ontario's foreign heat treatment seems pretty good for both D2 and AUS-8 with the latter actually beating the former when comparing a 15dps polished edge against cardboard. (I'd also choose Civivi's 9Cr18Mov or 14C28N over their D2.)
