Knife for defence against wild critters ?

You would probably want something you can use while on your back or chest...

Here, mountain lions are about the only thing to bring down a human, and they attack from the back and usually go for the neck area.

I'd probably want to use a dagger of some type, short and sharp, but enough to puncture organs.

Wear one of these:

And then carry whatever knife you want. ;)

About the wildest critter we get around these part is the occasional coyote. For them I carry a can of Fox Labs 5.3 OC pepper spray and a Cold Steel VG-1 Large Voyager. I haven't had to use either one yet, but I'm armed and dangerous . . . if you're a coyote. ;)

Hey Stabman,
that's one of the most interesting videos I have ever seen.
Do you know, which 2 knives this guy is wearing? Looks like Muelas, but I'm not sure.

Hello stabman
Are you really going to find out, which knives these are or is it a misunderstanding? It doesn't matter how long it will take, but I only want to know it.

I tried messaging the guy, but he seems to have had a bit of an internet meltdown and backed away from the net for a bit, so I'm thinking he may not respond.

If I manage to find out somehow, I'll post here; I'm curious as to what they are!

Great stabman, thanks.

When I first started my interest in knives, I had no knowledge at all about brands, steel, grinds or anything else, so My first purchase was a USMC Kbar. I figured if the military used it then it must be good. My collection has grown since then but when I go into the woods i still take that one with me for a quick grab defense blade.

Aside from all discussions. If have read an academically report, and the result is, that they have found out, that the penetration depth to kill big game like bears with weapons like spears or blades is minimal 20 cm - or a little bit less than 8 inches.
May anyone agree?

Not very relevant. Killing a bear and defending yourself from a bear attack are very different.

Of course, that's right - and hasn't really much to do with the test. What they have tested is only the penetration depth to reach the vitals. It's only the theory and means the same as - for example - to reach the heart of an adult person, and that is something less than 4 inches. And doesn't mean that you are on the sure side with a four inch blade.

Bear spray. Because I don't want to be close enough to use a knife. I did have to face down a band of marauding racoons who were trying to get into my cooler on a camping trip. The beasts were undeterred by shouts, or even thrown sticks and clods of dirt. When I got closer, the largest one hissed and bared his teeth. Thankfully, no one had a camera phone handy, because the video of a full grown man screaming obscenities at a family of racoons while jabbing a Cold Steel SRK would probably have gone viral.

Take knife and take a stick use knife to sharpen stick to a point! Much better than just a knife. I'm not making a joke but a determined bear or Mt Lion your pretty screwed with just a knife and a pack of hungry wolves your dead. Remember fire is you friend and not the critters. Road flares and air horns are excellent as bear deterrents.

I think the problem with this is in potentially losing the knife. Might as well just sharpen the stick, or attach a cutting stone/flint. A bear bat may be better since a spear may not kill the bear immediately and just enrage it. The bear bat to the head can potentially kill the bear or stun it severely.

A knife is just a last resort. Better to have a gun, bear spray, flare, or a smudge pot with punky wood and tinder fungus.
