Knife for my college-bound sister

I would go with a delica in blue or purple, or a sak cadet or classic. It would'nt spend too much in case she loses it (my sister lost a kershaw leek that I got her for christmas) and if she does actually try to sharpen it then it would probably be pretty frustrating trying to sharpen something like s30v and its superiors with no previous sharpening experience.

Krissig, getting back on topic, because I think what you're doing is awesome, I got a new one for you: Cold Steel Mini Tuff Lite. It comes in multiple colors, and is a VERY sturdy little blade. Light, and paired with a small SAK of some type, there won't be many jobs she can't tackle.

As a fellow "knife knut of the family", I think you're doing a good thing here.

+1 on that. In fact the regular is so small you might be able to just go with that? I am not sure if it comes in multiple colors though. To be honest I didn't know CS did multiple colors of anything. ;)

In college i could have used a sak with a cork screw and bottle opener.

What about one of the spyderco's with H1 steel. Yellow or orange. has pocket clip so it will always be on her. H1 doesn't rust and is super easy to sharpen. Can also be used as a bottle opener.

And thank you to the helpful majority for the suggestions. I will start looking into some of them. Keep posting!

Oh and the Izula is out, since its carbon steel, and since she will NEVER, and I mean NEVER, wear it as a neck knife. Trust me..... she aint the type.....

Big Red, good to see you brother. I only recently discovered this myself. The Mini Tuff Lite does indeed come in different colors (orange and green are two!) while the Tuff Lite fullsize only comes in one color, black.

Good to see you too man!

I might have to check that out. I don't usually go for mini stuff, but having a mini in green would be cool. The full size Tuff Lite is almost more mini than most minis. :P

I wanted to check out a Dozier folding hunter or two but it looks like even the full size is just 3 inches and I'd like something a tad more substantial. Despite this, I do like well-made small knives like the Tuff Lite. Useful blade shape, wide, light, and I can't imagine anyone getting freaked out by it.

Gave my mom this one for Mother's day, got my sister a kershaw clash for x-mas.

Quiet, Im a bit "meh" on the looks of the mini tuff lite. I know what she prefers in terms on looks, and that definitely isnt it. Im thinking something more "straight" looking as far as overall design, and with a more traditional looking blade shape (traditional is probably a bad word to use in this case). You know, more like a standard drop point or clip point, etc. As far as the overall knife, Im thinking something elegant, thin, and classier might be ideal, considering the situations she will be using it in. But by all means, throw all of your suggestions into the pile. It definitely couldnt hurt!

It isn't elegant, but what about a Kershaw Needs Work? Short, straight wharncliffe style in multiple colors. Low cost, easy upkeep, etc.

That's fair enough. What about possibly a Kershaw Leek or Chive even? They come in multiple colors, and they're small, elegant, light, razor sharp, and assist open. My wife loves all of her Kershaws, maybe one of those would be the ticket?

Im definitely looking into some kershaws. They have a lot of options that I think would fit the bill. Im also thinking about a benchmade emissary or customized mini grip. She doesnt really want anything pink, but maybe one with s30v and either blue or white scales would be good.

TOO MANY OPTIONS! :D

Yeah in addition to Needs Work I was thinking Leek as well. Heck, I don't really use mine, I can send it to her//you if you want... it is the standard color however.

What about the Columbia River ripple, ripple 2, or (if you want to spring a bit more) eros? They are all compact, incredibly light, and a joy to carry.

Aww thanks man. :) Thats a very generous offer my friend, but that wont be necessary. Im not so sure about the Leek anyway. I might wanna stay away from assisted folders altogether, so that she can avoid any harassment over the definition of a "knife that opens automatically" (thats what the rule says).

Probably wise... I rarely carried assisted in college, although I like to think no one would have really cared. Never know though.

I'll definitely recommend the Kershaw Leek, also. There are numerous variants, and the steel is an easy one to maintain with simple tools. For the price of the knife, you could easily get a nice sharpening set/strop to partner with it.

For a specific model, check out the 1660VIB, the Rainbow Leek. I had one a while back, and not a single person took the knife to be the least bit threatening. I think with the finish, they couldn't quite figure out what it was in many a case.

If you have a bit of time to look, for a more unique option, try searching for one of the original Kershaw Zing's. I have an orange handled one with the striated blade that is a great little knife. Very useful shape, and with the color, design, and size, it's very non-threatening.

Wow, how did I forget about the Ripple???? That just went to the top of my list! I heard it had IKBS, but is it also assisted? And does anyone wanna share some experience with it, as to how good it is?

I've had the lower end liner-lock model. Even at that, it broke in really nicely and flipped very smoothly. The frame-lock models have some unique color options, too. They are all un-assisted flippers. The Eros I had was phenomenal, too.

Krissig, I'd honestly be thinking an Ontario RAT II in something like the orange or bright green color. What about a possible SAK? I mean, sure neither knife will last forever without sharpening, but neither would raise eyebrows with non-knife people.

The Rat II is exactly what I was going to suggest. My wife has one with pink scales and she loves it. It's a very innocuous looking knife. Nobody even bats an eyelash when she pulls it out and uses it.
