Knife for my college-bound sister

Wow, how did I forget about the Ripple???? That just went to the top of my list! I heard it had IKBS, but is it also assisted? And does anyone wanna share some experience with it, as to how good it is?
I owned the top end blue one with the Acuto steel - couldn't stand it. The darn thing had more hot spots on the handle than a waffle iron. It may be ok for smaller hands though.

I don't own it, but I have heard good things....BTW WE NEED MORE PICS!

Oh dont worry. She'll only be using it for lighter tasks anyway. I dont think you can get hot spots from opening packages and cutting loose strings:D

Thanks everyone for the help! I think the lower end ripple is the best option right now, but Im still looking. Keep adding knives if you feel they fit the description:thumbup:

Quiet, Im a bit "meh" on the looks of the mini tuff lite. I know what she prefers in terms on looks, and that definitely isnt it. Im thinking something more "straight" looking as far as overall design, and with a more traditional looking blade shape (traditional is probably a bad word to use in this case). You know, more like a standard drop point or clip point, etc. As far as the overall knife, Im thinking something elegant, thin, and classier might be ideal, considering the situations she will be using it in. But by all means, throw all of your suggestions into the pile. It definitely couldnt hurt!

For under $200, here is my suggestion. First and foremost, remember that your sister does not carry anything in her pockets regularly. There are many times when she does not HAVE any pockets, so it will live in her purse. If she doesn't have her purse, she's not going to have your knife. You want to cover your bases here. Something for the purse, something for the dorm, and something that will go on her keychain. They all have to be cute or they're not going to be used.

1. For the dorm/her room -- a pair of Ontario scissors with the leather sheath.
2. For her keychain -- SAK Classic Edelweiss. Otherwise go with something pink. Or get the animal prints one in Tiger. There's one in Watermelon that has a fingernail clipper.
3. For the purse -- Opinel #6 in stainless

Scissors -- $35
SAK -- $20
Opinel #6 -- $15 give or take

Bonus Pack

Fenix E12 mini flashlight, AA. Give her a huge pack of Duracells or a charger if she will remember to charge it up, $30 plus batteries
Thermos Stainless Steel Commuter Bottle, 16-Ounce, Raspberry, $30, will fit in car cup holders
Rainbow space pen with two refills, $40 with the refills give or take
Pyrex one quart measuring cup. Good for nuking Ramen. $7
Aerobie Superdisc. $8
Cute pink flash drive -- $20 give or take
Lipton tea, 300 bags -- $7

All of the above is in the $200 range. Your sister may be very different from the college freshmen girls I know, so if any of this has some value to you then great.

She is so cute though, OK I am backing off, don't mean to sound like a perv. No disrespects meant.

Does the OP have any pictures of your sister? Just Kidding.

Regardless what you get her she will also need a Sterno Stove to cook smores on.

Hey, no offense taken. I like showing her off!

And I don't need to worry - she can take care of herself!

Heres a picture of the pink rat in action:

I think the rat II with pink scales would be "cute enough" that it would get carried.

I audibly LOL'd at a lot of the things in your post, but the part in bold is absolutely priceless:thumbup::D

You perfectly captured it in that one quote! But I dont really agree with the rest of what you said.

Oh and Im thinking that for times when she doesnt have her purse or pockets, she either wont need a knife, or can just carry IWB (unless its a dress or something, then theres no hope)

My little sister leaves for college next week. I gave her a kershaw leek with pink scales. She always seems to find mine when ( I lose it) so I thought ..why not.

How about a pink Kershaw leak? That was my daughters first knife. She works at a fast food chain, and is currently in school. The knife is tuff and works for its intended purpose and you come in at less than a hundred bucks. I maintain the knife for her and cuts the things she needs to cut day to day ie. Boxes, tags off of clothing, or other goods.
I consider it socially acceptable and non threatening, after all its small and pink.

AntDog,
Yup. Im most likely getting her the lower end version of the CRKT Ripple, but Im still looking for others. Her birthday isnt until early September, so I have plenty of time.

Dr.g0nz0 and thefamcnaj,
I like the idea of the leek, but I dont think she will appreciate the looks as much as the ripple. Plus she said that she hates the idea of pink knives.......

Leek comes in purple too I think...assisted open..ok steel and one hell of a point for stabbing soft tissue. But hey...I like kershaw for that kind of price range.

Df2, delica, of even a leatherman just because she will get more utility out of it than just a knife. Custom mini grip or mini barrage?

Oh! Didn't know she didn't like pink knives. Does she like any colors, or just black handle, silver blade type of gal?

The Kershaw Clash is a good knife for girls, or even guys who like a little smaller knife.

I had to go look up pics of the ripple. I had seen em before, but forgot what they looked like. They're nice too!

Oh of course she likes colors, just doesnt buy into the pink thing when it comes to knives. I looked at the clash, but didnt like the assist, and the looks are a little off of what i think she is looking for. Anyway, Im off to bed. Ill decide in the morning:D

The only thing I'm LOL'ing about is that you think you know what your sister does when you're not around.

Gather, forumites, gather.......

Being the resident knife knut in my family, I have been tasked with researching and deciding on a knife for my sister, who is going to be attending college this fall. The occasion is technically her 19th birthday, but I like to think of it as a going away present that she can use throughout her college years.

The ground rules:

Her school doesnt specify blade length (WOOOHOOOO!!!!). The only thing it says is that fixed blades over 2.5 inches are not allowed, and you cant have any autos or any knives that are double edged

Im thinking it should be a folder, and no longer than 3 inches to make it more people-friendly

Im also thinking it should be a "socially accepted color". Not that black, grey, etc, are off limits. I just think its better if its a brighter color that she will be more likely to carry and use in public.

Under $200 if possible, but cheaper is always better, provided that its also good quality.

Im familiar with most of the knives from BM and Spyderco, so try throwing out some alternative options. I very well might get her a BM or spydie, but id like some other suggestions as well.

Best if it has a longer lasting steel, because I doubt she will ever sharpen it. She doesnt currently know how, and wont be bringing the equipment with her anyway. (Which is why I might just get her one of the little pocket sharpeners that lansky makes to go along with the new knife). But really, the steel wont be a deal breaker, so throw your suggestions out there anyway!

Also, err on the side of corrosion resistance when it comes to the steel. She definitely wont be maintaining it as much as most of us do.......

Thanks in advance everyone!

Take a look at the Kershaw Leek Rainbow. It is a beautiful knife and even none knife people ooo and ahh over it. It is also very sharp ;) I can off the safety catch with my pinky and flick the flipper at the same time. Fast and fun.

Why can't we have a picture of her? Just an everyday picture. I know that would help me pick a knife for her.

I sent my girl off to college with a matriarch to scare the boys and a delica to scare the fruit...she had the delica but picked the matriarch out of my collection (includes customs) as a graduation gift. :)
