Knife for my college-bound sister

Probably wise... I rarely carried assisted in college, although I like to think no one would have really cared. Never know though.

When I used to carry a scallion I had quite a few people call it a switchblade. It annoyed the crap out of me, it's like someone calling your ford a honda!

The ripple is non assisted and the easiest opening flipper I own. I really do love it. I carry it as my "gentleman's knife" when wearing a suit is mandated. I haven't noticed it raise an eye brow in an office setting.. as my zt350 has many times.

I've had the lower end liner-lock model. Even at that, it broke in really nicely and flipped very smoothly. The frame-lock models have some unique color options, too. They are all un-assisted flippers. The Eros I had was phenomenal, too.

Hmmm...... Im kinda liking the lower end model better tbh. I prefer the liner lock to the frame lock on the more expensive one. Plus the aluminum will make the lower end ripple lighter in pocket. I just KNOW shes gonna love the looks, and at the moment I really dont think she will be able to appreciate the difference between the ripple and a more expensive knife. I think it will be more than enough knife for what she will need it for. Now i just have to decide whether to get the 2.7 inch, or the 3.1 inch........hmmmm....I think the 2.7 inch may be just a little too small, but the 3.1 in may be just a little too big:( Although she does have tiny hands

Multitool, multitool, multitool. In my opinion having and especially carrying a standalone locking knife is a liability that is not worth the risk.

Mkay? Two words. Blade Forums. You are not in the majority here my friend.

But I do agree on the idea of a multitool. I was thinking about getting her one of the leatherman s2 or c2 juice's, but she always wanted a dedicated folder.

Accidental double post. I should have specified that I meant in a college setting. College kids are nasty about spreading rumors and other distasteful stuff that might be compounded if they know she has a "big scary knife".

Funnily enough I bought a Scallion at the local sporting goods place there one weekend when my mum came up for a visit. Now there's a harmless looking knife. Some people just don't know.

The most useful blade I had in college was a multitool. You could get about any leatherman and a benchmade mini grip or Spyderco delica in your color of choice well within your budget and have a lot of bases covered.

Agree on the suggestions of something with a bottle opener, what else do you really need in university? I know you're looking for something of great of great quality, but she most likely won't carry a large folder, whereas she can throw a SAK in her purse and grab it out night for beer time. At least she will get use out of an SAK.

Ok well fair enough. :)

I dont think it will be a problem though

I'm not sure why you'd think that. A knife can be used for so many things, how could it be a liability? Krissig is here asking for advice, not damnation. A young woman with a good head on her shoulders isn't a liability whatsoever, and having a pocket knife with her won't be an issue. I think we on Bladeforums forget that for every time one of us was greeted with "OMG is that a switchblade???" or "OMG why do you have that weapon!!!!" there are countless times where a person will take a knife out, use it, then put it back in their pocket and no one will bat an eye.

It's quite possible that this young woman will use this knife for years without ever being looked at twice.

Yup. But to be completely honest, shes currently about the LEAST self-reliant person on the planet. Hate to say it, but shes the person who would die first if the you know what ever hit the fan. I personally believe in being prepared and self-reliant, and that having a knife is a vital part of it. She has always wanted a nice knife, so I am glad to take this opportunity to educate her on the importance of self reliance. Hopefully this knife will be a step in the right direction for her. And it will allow her to complete all of the cutting tasks she would normally have to fumble around for scissors to complete. I dont think anyone will be spreading rumors about her having a 3 inch knife in her pocket or purse
