Knife for my college-bound sister

Hey man, we're just trying to cover all bases :D Compared to the knives I prefer, I find the 0566 a little small, so "small, light, and people friendly" is entirely relative. ;)

I'd say go for the Ripple, as you said, and if it doesn't fit, you'll have plenty of time to explore other options.

Oh jeez guys, what about "elegant, small, light, and people friendly" dont you under stand??? LOL:D

0566??? 0801???

I have a 0566 and the thing is a tiny bit large for even MY hand. Its WAY too big for her. And she definitely doesnt need something that weighs over 5 ounces and has a 3.25 inch blade. And that thing would definitely not be very people friendly. THAT would be something people would spread rumors about....

Think slim, light, fast, people friendly, and sleek. No pink, no weird blade shapes (Im talking along the lines of reverse tantos, most spyderco blade shapes, and wharncliffs) She doesnt like any of those styles.

I still think the best option is to grab a lower end liner lock CRKT ripple (the 2.7 inch version), and see how it looks and feels, so I can decide far in advance if its good or not. Otherwise Ill have to order something to replace it last minute if I find out its not what I wanted

When I designed an emergency kit for a college bound girl, I picked a red handled Vic Farmer. Because it’s so generally useful.

I thought I might get static about the lack of a corkscrew. But college kids go for screw tops, or wine in a box.

I also recommended a small multi tool.

What about the Gayle Bradley?

Hello all,
I am new to Bladeforums but have been a knife lover for years. I am glad to be a new member of this awesome community.

IMHO a simple Opinel #7 in stainless or 'carbone' (love the way that rolls off the tongue) would be an ideal daily use knife that is very light, unobtrusive and not the least bit threatening. They have a certain finesse and utilitarian beauty that I love. You could also lightly hand-sand it and apply a hand rubbed oil finish and mod it so that it is a one-of-a-kind just for her!

As far as fixed blades are concerned- I really like the Emerson or other LaGriffe offerings out there but the Emerson clearly looks like it's made to get down to business fast. Though mine could double duty as a protective blade I find it very useful in all things blade-needy such as cutting twine, mail, cardboard as well as other general tasks.

I hope this helps- my daughter is off to school as well. I should start modifying an Opinel tomorrow!

Best,
FLoutdoorsman

This is a knife forum. It is already decided that i am getting her a dedicated modern one handed opening knife. I have already thought about multitools, saks, etc, and come to the decision that those are out. Please stop suggesting them. Within the parameters established, go ahead and suggest a knife. But please stop trying to convince me that (blah blah) is all she needs....

Thanks in advance everyone!

I know one brilliant, gentle young woman, 4.0 in high school; now has one year of college completed in heavy-duty math/science in a large city university. She has several folders, but prefers her switchblade. I think that she can take care of herself. I certainly hope so.

What school is she going to that you feel she needs a knife?? I'm sure there are more practical items a first year student can use,

What could be more practical for a young woman...than attempting to protect her life against the crud of this world?

My girl who lives in a dorm carries the Benchmade 551 grip. She picked one up in a store and said I don't want any other knife. I loved her choice. Long enough of a blade for good self defense and good utility. Literally the smoothest knife I've ever felt. When I disengage the axis lock the blade flies freely like butter. Terrible detent though.

I'd recommend a Kershaw Skyline. And she can get whatever color G10 she wants pretty much. I mirror polished my blade and internals, it doesn't come like this out of the box. I got mine for $30 but that low price is NO reflection of it's quality as it is a fantastic EDC and fits most if not all of your criteria. Not threatening, very lightweight, unassisted opening that's extremely smooth, takes a RAZOR sharp edge and keeps it very well with the 14C28N steel and I haven't had any problems with corrosion even before the mirror polish and using it as my EDC very often and putting it through the ringer for awhile.

^^Thats a sick skyline:thumbup:
Thanks :D Definitely one of my favorite knives. I like it more than most if not all of my folders including the ones that cost A LOT more. That's why I put the time and energy into polishing her up. The Skyline is an amazing knife. Soon I'm going to buy another one...or two. :)

Thing is, we aren't here to suggest a knife for ourselves. We need to put ourselves in her shoes here. The info is there, just gotta think outside of the box.

What about the kershaw chive? I know women pockets on clothing are often a lot smaller than men's pockets. It comes in pink too which most girls like.. And it's very comfortable especially due to its size

The Spyderco G-10 Dragonfly is an ideal purse sized knife. (I've given four of them as gifts to female friends and family)
