Knife for my college-bound sister

I'd recommend a Case mini copperlock. I have two, and love them. Perfect size, nice looking scales. But then, I prefer traditionals.

Hmmm...... Im kinda liking the lower end model better tbh. I prefer the liner lock to the frame lock on the more expensive one. Plus the aluminum will make the lower end ripple lighter in pocket. I just KNOW shes gonna love the looks, and at the moment I really dont think she will be able to appreciate the difference between the ripple and a more expensive knife. I think it will be more than enough knife for what she will need it for. Now i just have to decide whether to get the 2.7 inch, or the 3.1 inch........hmmmm....I think the 2.7 inch may be just a little too small, but the 3.1 in may be just a little too big:( Although she does have tiny hands

I don't think you can go wrong either way there. I found the larger model just a little small in hand, but for small hands, the 2.7 may be perfect. It really is a very light little knife - quite easy to slip in your pocket and forget about until you need it.

That raises a really nice idea - the price of the Ripple is low enough that you could also pick up a pretty nice little traditional for a total well within your range. That would give some great versatility for any situation of carry.

The only thing I'm LOL'ing about is that you think you know what your sister does when you're not around.

Bro, I meant it as a compliment. That line is spot on in terms of what she, and many other girls, are like.

All I'm saying is that I disagree with your choices for the knives I should get. There's nothing wrong, but I think I know better than you which knife she will like. Oh and your post contradicts itself at least once, in how you say that she often won't have pockets or a purse but then recommend getting her a keychain knife, presumably for when she didn't have her main knife......buuuut, if she didn't have pockets or a purse, where would her keys go?

I think you are looking too far into this. She wants one dedicated knife, so that's what I'm gonna buy. If she doesn't carry it at certain times because she can't, then who cares. She probably won't need it in those situations anyway. She doesn't need a multi knife system

But thank you anyway for the suggestions:)

I would say something that commands authority, but will not scare people. Something that will stand up to the treatment it will get from a college student. I would say a ZT 0801, it's a little over your 3 in length requirement, but it is a stout blade and under $200. Another good one would be a spyderco gayle bradley, it's a tough folder, but also elegant, this also goes a bit over you 3 in length, but still under $200.

Along those lines, I would add a ZT 0566 - a good deal smaller in hand than either of those, yet very stout. ELMAX would also provide great corrosion resistance and edge holding for her, too, being a lower-maintenance steel. Moreso, there is the new carbon fiber model, which I find dresses up knives a good deal and takes away any scare factor.

Oh jeez guys, what about "elegant, small, light, and people friendly" dont you under stand??? LOL:D

0566??? 0801???

I have a 0566 and the thing is a tiny bit large for even MY hand. Its WAY too big for her. And she definitely doesnt need something that weighs over 5 ounces and has a 3.25 inch blade. And that thing would definitely not be very people friendly. THAT would be something people would spread rumors about....

Think slim, light, fast, people friendly, and sleek. No pink, no weird blade shapes (Im talking along the lines of reverse tantos, most spyderco blade shapes, and wharncliffs) She doesnt like any of those styles.

I still think the best option is to grab a lower end liner lock CRKT ripple (the 2.7 inch version), and see how it looks and feels, so I can decide far in advance if its good or not. Otherwise Ill have to order something to replace it last minute if I find out its not what I wanted

Mcusta Tsuchi in purple or green. $100 shipped and you won't beat the f&f for the money.

Kershaw Leek (Orange, Teal, OD, etc.)

Kershaw Skyline

Framelock Ripple (Copper or Blue)

Benchmade Emissary (470 if you don't want black)

My lady has a decent size collection but usually reaches for her Tsuchi in green or an orange Kershaw Leek.

Thanks^

The mcusta suggestion opened a whole new realm. They have some decent designs that she might like

I still think the ripple is the best option though. Either that or the BM emissary

Mcusta is a very good suggestion! They are damn near flawless, and something your sis will likely hang onto forever. I have had a few and they are superb.

MOKI knives, traditional looking with different options on handle material.

Be a GOOD big brother and visit the following;

http://www.corneredcat.com/

if you will read or browse this site, you may decide to buy her the book "The Cornered Cat" or suggest that she look at it or buy her a Kershaw DWO[Delly Wade Officer] in pink.

One of the most useful things anyone can give a loved one is an awareness that there is danger in our world....and it may be closer than most people believe.

Best.
