Well, we aren't married, but calling her my "girlfriend" feels too cheap, "significant other" sounds like I'm bringing home someone of my same gender, and we're not engaged but it is very serious... Close enough. ANYWAY. ON TO THE ACTUAL THREAD.

A while ago, I gave her a SanRenMu WA3-401:

It's a small knife, good build quality. It was no special occasion or anything - we weren't even dating at the time - I just asked if she would have any use for it, and gave it to her.

Since then, she has had it with her at all times, day and night, using it whenever possible. She has named it Marvin, and after about 3 months of carrying it, she has decided that Marvin needs a buddy.

Some relevant points:
- She REALLY liked how smooth my Roommate's Shirogorov clone was (ceramic bearings) - ease of opening and closing is where my suggestion below fails.
- She likes utilitarian blade designs, like sheepsfoot and wharncliffe, etc, but I think she'd be down for pretty much anything
- Ergonomics are key. She has smallish hands and is a smallish person.
- She works in an office, and also has two other jobs; she works for the apartment complex she lives in as a cleaning service, and she also does market research for internet businesses. The knife needs to be relatively office-friendly, but still useful. For example, Marvin was used to scrape off some grout that maintenance workers failed to clean off of a bathtub in an apartment she was preparing to be photographed.

With those criteria, I suggested the Cold Steel Tuff Lite and the mini version (colors!) - I've had plenty of experience with the full-size model and can only speak glowingly about the ergos and utilitarian nature. On top of that, it's cheap (she's a bit scatterbrained and can lose things), light, sturdy, easy to maintain, secure in its lockup 100% of the time, non-weaponized, and offers a full-hand grip without being too large of a knife.

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of other obvious options, though! I really could use some input here. If nothing else, thank you for reading this far.

Get her one of those pink handled micro Recons. But whatever you do, keep it under $50, so you won't get upset when the day comes that she misplaces it.

Its a bad thing that she's experienced a clone of an expensive knife, she will inevitably want the real thing. Then you'll have to buy it AND a ring. And pray that she doesn't lose the knife.

Oh, and make your own life easier by getting something that takes an edge quick... You'll be the one sharpening it.

My lady absolutely loves the mini stryker tanto from Benchmade. Smooth as butter and she walks around just openong and closing it haha. We picked it up for her at bladehq. Other 19th an that her favorite is a custom delica. Hope that helps

Dude ,you seriously aint hooked her up with one of those TI Chaparells?;) That is a perefct chick knife. But yeah very spendy.

I really dont look at small blades much but for cheap and small would also say cold steel(hold out III). If can think of anything else will report back.

If she'd carry a fixed blade would get a "no frills knife"(or something else) from Nighthaxen for $40-50. Small, pretty and made of 51200 steel.

Or maybe a BK24 and make some nice custom scales for it.

Benchmade benchmite aint bad either if you can find one at there original price.

How much and how bigs the limit?

Swiss Army knife? Maybe a Signature? She might find the scissors, nail file, and ball point pen handy.

Some have some fancy colors too depending on the model. I'd suggest getting one with scissors and nail file for sure.

2nd choice would be a purple Delica 4 FFG (or another of the colored Delicas)

My "wife" (similar scenario to you, no ring but pretty serious, but with a son together; baby momma makes her sound like a hood rat though, anyways), she loves the Kershaw Leek I got her, quick flipper, small bit not "too small", great "chick" knife I think (smallish hands), got one for my little sister too who also loves it... Tons of options too, get her one in her favorite color, or one of the fancier little composite blades, and it won't break the bank.

What, no cork screw??? the Huntsman...

Wowser! An ebayer just included one of those with my purchase as a 'thank you'. I am very impressed with it.

For her, how about a Spyderco Ladybug or Dragonfly, maybe one of the LB/DF Salt versions?

My wife has a Delica in purple. And yes I no some chicks don't like girly colors but as it turns out some do! The Delica comes in so many variants. Stainless Steel might be nice. One of the classier smaller Benchmades might be nice, a 707 maybe?

My wife has retired after teaching first grade until age 70. While teaching she never wanted a knife for fear of forgetting it was in her purse and taking it to school. I just bought her a knife at Blade and she is going to carry it. It is a Busse "Smokey", a small fixed blade in Elmax. I am giving her a choice between the Smokey and a Game Warden. I kinda hope she chooses the Game Warden because it is in INFI steel and I know that at some point she is going to pry something. Please no lectures about a knife not being for prying because she is not a knife person and it is going to happen regardless of what you or I think.

I picked up one of the new Kershaw Shuffles with the purple scales and blackwash recently for my wife. I included it with a purple Olight keychain light for our 5th anniversary present(yeah I am that guy). She loves the shuffle and this is actually her second one. So now she has one shuffle with customized pink/purple/black scales and the new purple blackwash version that she rotates. The shuffle is inexpensive but a great edc. The blades sharpen easy and the edge last long enough to be used daily. We both like the grip and the ergos are actually really good for such a small knife. These are so inexpensive that you can pick up a couple and still be within budget. Not that it really matters but, most of her coworkers are women and they really like her little shuffle too.

As a side note- My wife dislikes all the pink things that are just pink to be "girly" but loves purple- who knows?

Edit- As another side note- I debated between the tuff lite mini, shuffle and leek when buying her first knife. The tuff lite mini looks good but I just wasn't sure and I really liked the looks of the leek and that it was made in the US, but although my wife uses a knives responsibly and daily at work, she is very clumsy and the leek had "puncture wound" written all over it. So i went with the shuffle and it turned out great.

I just got my GF a Spydie Ladybug 3 in ZDP-189 as a birthday present for about $40, arriving tomorrow.

I handled one in-store and liked the ergos a lot for such a small knife.

I think that's a good price for such a great steel.

Just thought I'd offer a lady's opinion. I second the leek, that is my primary beater knife (in purple, lol) and it has never failed me. It is easy to sharpen, a decent size but doesn't scare people and holds a great edge. I also find the Spyderco Dragonfly to be a good fit for my hands and at the risk of sounding sexist, it's very "girl friendly".

If you are going up the pricing scale, I LOVE my new small Sebenza 21 (I got the leafy / vine engraved one). It is the perfect size, opens like a dream, is durable and feels amazing in the hand. Note that I tried the Sebenza 25 and found it not nearly as smooth and greatly prefer the 21 though maybe it needed break in time, but I wanted it to feel smooth right out of the box.

Hope that is helpful!

Thank you. The "doesn't matter as long as it's pink" replies that always accompany these threads make me nuts. If I gave my wife a pink knife, she'd stab me with it.

What knife do you get a woman? The same one as you would get for yourself.

When I think of a knife in my wifes hands all I can think of is something very dull. Sorry, couldn't resist. No offense intended.

I got my wife a Kershaw Camber a few months ago. It was a replacement for the Cryo she's been carrying for over a year.

The Camber is a little larger, but the aluminum handles keep the weight down and the Trac Tek inserts help with grip. Also, it's made in USA meaning better QC (though Kershaw does a phenomenal job with their imports), and the best part is the steel is S30V so I only need to hit the stones every few weeks.

ETA: Here's a pic! It's like the Blur's baby brother

We end up selling a lot of women Spyderco dragonflies. U could get it in zdp and it would stand up to the crazy things women do to a knife. Plus most guys forget that a lot of women's clothing has no pockets, so the thin dfly carries in the waistband easy and the wire clip makes it harder to distinguish as a knife.

My gf has a few she really likes...
-mini grip
-rubicon
-blur

But for the love of all things holy, dont call her your wife after 3 months lol
