My wife and I were just dating when I bought her first pocket knife. A Vic Super Tinker. I could tell that she did not feel as if she would ever use it but she said thank you and put it her car. That was eight years ago. Today, I would have a fight on my hands if ever tried to use it.
Once, we were at a gun show and she "informed" me that I had to buy her a second SAK. Who am I to argue? She picked out a knife and, like a good husband, I made my wallet weigh a little less. The knife she picked out gets used more than the Super Tinker I bought her. Based on this experience, I guess that my recommendation would be to let her pick out her own knife. Pick a dollar amount you both are comfortable with and then let her shop. Oh, listen to the banter between your spouse and the sales staff. What she says may be very enlightening to you.
On a side note, I ask my wife what she would suggest for your wife and her response was, "Something small and pretty." This comes out of the mouth of a self proclaimed tomboy; who did not even own a dress when we started dating.
I will never figure out women.
