Knife in a gun fight.

Over here in Florida just last week a poor guy working in a convenience store was shot and killed by a robber after he had given him the cash register contents with no resistance. The shooting was witnessed by a customer hiding in the store, and that person said the clerk had not resisted.

That was an irrational action by the robber (more so than the robbery itself, seeing as the security camera is as good as a witness as the clerk). I personally believe you can't preemptively prevent all irrational actions by for instance blowing them everyone you confront away. If you can throw a sucker punch and run away, then go ahead. But if you pull a knife and then they pull a knife (or gun) in a standoff, those chances don't sound good to me. I consider that I've got a lot more to lose than the mugger.

First off... Even though the guy doesn't consider himself a hero for killing the girl - as he should not - he IS a hero for standing for his life and the lives of the people he in essence saved by stopping these lowlifes-of-humanity.

It doesn't matter their race, creed, faith, decent, background, political-party, or status at all - they're criminals. Once they loaded into that car with the mindset of robbing they signed their death warrant, and thank GOD that the Marine - HooRah - had the balls to face them - albeit last resort.

I second that motion that ALL OF THEM should've died as well. They hopped in that car for an unlawful purpose - to rob and perhaps kill, and that ALONE should provide enough reason for all theirs deaths. Too bad they will be able to work out and watch TV in jail and that WE WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR IT NOW!!!!!

Lastly... when you put a knife in your pocket - for self-defense or utility aside - you'd better be prepared to use it, as I do everytime my Benchmade goes on beltline. Almost everyday I prepare mentally with the fact that I may have to defend and injure or take a life. With that thought and responsibility in mind, I venture out to the parking lot with my girlfriend after a night at the movie theater ready to defend her life and mine. Because when it comes down to it, if someone has the balls to attack an innocent, tax-paying citizen, you'd better be prepared to get those balls cut off.

Now if ANYTHING said in this thread qualifies for the epithet "liberal bulls***," it's "someone ended up dying for the money in a wallet."

This scumbag bitch died because she presented a credible lethal threat to an innocent victim, and the victim was not willing to gamble his life on the idea that all she (along with three other armed people) was going to do was take his material wealth and leave him unscathed.

You sound RIDICULOUS when you try to make it seem that this guy weighed her life against his wallet's contents and said, "I value a few bucks over the life of a human woman." He was faced with DEATH at the hands of four criminals, are you crazy?!

When someone threatens you, unless you are a pussy, you fight back! Over here in Florida just last week a poor guy working in a convenience store was shot and killed by a robber after he had given him the cash register contents with no resistance. The shooting was witnessed by a customer hiding in the store, and that person said the clerk had not resisted.

That's what your absurd compassion will get you.

In case you can't tell, I wouldn't give a rat's diseased turd for the life of a person like this girl or her cohorts. I wish all four had been killed, not just her. Humanity simply does not need them. What we need is people who can coexist peacefully with their fellows. Every person who can't do that, who dies, brings us a step closer to a peaceful world.

I do however sympatheize with Mr Autrey in the aftermath. I hope his character and love of life grows and is not burdened too much by the event.

It sounds like you're saying this tongue-in-cheek, and more than a little condescendingly -- as though he has something he needs to make peace with because he ought to feel like he overreacted.

Burdened? I'd feel like a CHAMPION if I had successfully, and with very little personal injury to myself, defended against four armed attackers, killing one and gravely wounding another. (Has the second scumbag died yet?)

I'd feel guilt if I killed someone out of my own greed. I'd feel guilt if I was negligent and my negligence caused someone's death or injury. But if I were attacked by people with guns and other weapons, and I turned the tables on them and killed them?! I'd be elated!

Why you think that this stupid girl's life was worth feeling "burdened" about ending is beyond me. She made her choice. She forced his hand. She got what was coming to her. He had nothing to feel burdened about. He was righteous.

There is another interview with Mr Autry here. He is black himself BTW and sounds like a really nice guy with a family.

I thought I just heard in this interview he had a boxcutter in his pocket...

=========================

The reporter in that clip did say "a boxcutting knife." But every other report I've seen has said "pocketknife," and I THINK you can see a reasonably clear shot of the knife on the video they link to in the third paragraph of this story. About halfway through the video, they cut to some crime-scene footage. Freeze the video when the camera zooms in on the road barrier/evidence marker that says "1." Looks to me like some kind of one-blade clip pocket knife like a Spyderco Endura or something.

My guess is that the reporter in the story Andrew Taylor cites said "a boxcutting knife" because Autry probably told her or another reporter that he uses the knife to cut boxes. I guess that makes my SAK Classic a "toe nail trimming knife." ;-)

You know, it's actually been refreshing that I have yet to read/watch a story about this incident where they go out of their way to explain "why he was carrying a knife." I hate when they do that, as if carrying a knife is something that would need to be explained. I long for the day when I read a story that involves a pocketknife and the reporter says that "so and so was carrying a knife in case he needed to cut stuff, because he's a reasonable person who sees the value in being prepared and in not relying on others to help him out of every damn jam. I carry a knife too, dear readers, and so should you, you pussies!"

MM, thanks for the link. Its hard to tell but it does look like a folder with clip, yet it looks closed which would be odd. Perhaps it is a clip type box cutter hard to tell.

On another link he said living in NYC was what gave him street skills. Walking out from the dark side of sidewalk, stopping to see what caused a cat to run across the road etc.

Knowing Atlanta's media, they probably went with "a box-cutting knife" because it sounded more "PC."

Probably so.

Still, that's better than the other extreme ... over-long explanations of WHY HE WAS CARRYING A KNIFE  and perhaps even a side bar on some "expert" who claims those who carry knives are 53.671% more likely to have that knife turned on them by an attacker, etc.

As a counsellor of veterans and victims of crime I see the psychological scars of violence and how it affects everybody involved. Post-traumatic stress disorder can be very nasty and long-lasting. Many of the veterans I see continue to suffer daily because of their experiences-40 years and more after the events.
I hope this man doesn't suffer through protecting himself.

There's a lot of ugliness in this thread, undeserving of further comment.

But how about this:
“These are the individuals we have been looking for, for the past two nights,” said Atlanta police Detective Danny Stephens. “They’ve were riding around in this area. They were actually robbing people. There’s actually been a lookout for these individuals, and tonight, we caught up with them.”

Speaking of larceny: Detective Stephens is attempting to take credit from a courageous armed citizen. Charming.

I'm glad the Marine did well. I bet it will be a long time before they jump someone again. :)
