Okay, so it sounds like people are up for it! Cool! This thread will have all the info for participating. So, follow thiese instructions:

Knife in the Hat (KITH) is an unoriginal idea, but the gist of it is that everbody who participates makes a knife that's up to snuff as per the criteria (see below), we draw names randomly, and the person whose name you draw is who you send your knife to. The basic idea is that you make a knife and send it to another maker and you get a knife of about the same quality and vaue from someone else. It's great fun both to push the envelope in terms of what you make as well as the anticipation of seeing what you get.

So, people who want to participate will be able to make a knife. Last year was all fixed blades except for Chris's cool little folder. I got a sweet letter opener forged from Damascus (pretty damn sharp letter opener) with a stand. Everyone was pretty happy, I think. I know my knife this year will be way better than last year. I may even have it ready already! We'll see. But, we'll need to decide the specific criteria later, but for now it will have to be a full size, usable, heat treated knife of some sort. We'll figure out a general dollar amount to aim for and set other criteria later.

If you want to participate, you must (before November 1, 2003... anyone after can't participate...sorry!:
1) Reply here
2) Email me at agocs_s@hotmail.com with your name, mailing address, email address and Bladeforums name).

Once registration is complete I'll set up an email list and keep everyone in communication, then we can decide the criteria, etc.

For now, I'm thinking early February for the knife to be completed and sent. That gives us a lot of time, and of course we can discuss that, too. So, just reply here and email me before Nov.1 and we'll be ready to rock!

Had to withdraw last time, but definitely want in this time. And enough time here that no reasono I shoudl ahve trouble. Bring it on. :)

Is this open to beginers? I will have Knife # 1 done in a week or two and can post a pic at that point to see if I'm up to snuff. I would love to get in on this put would not want bad feelings when if my knife is not up to the level the recipiant is hoping for.

It better be open to beginners because I'm still only on #4 I think. :) But last one was good enough taht i think I'll be alright. L east hope so, will find out in about 4 months. ;)

Man this kind of thing seems awesome. I am not going to participate on this one tho, as i need a little more practice. But hopefully in a few months ill have a few knives under my belt and ill be ready for the next knife in a hat!Cant wait to see the results!

1) "Kind of knife"- we left this open last year. We had a few neck knives, a letter opener, a folder and a bunch of other great knives. I'd be just as happy as leaving this open this year, too, as long as we're under the understanding that a functional knife of equal or greater value that we set being the aim.

2) Beginners- I've seen first knives that are amazing, so I don't see a problem with this, as long as it's a working knife of the criteria we set up. Go ahead and register and once we get the criteria set up if you want to drop out you can, as long as you do it right away so we don't screw someone in the trade!

While I know that this would require a leap of faith, I was wondering about maybe doing it this way:

1. Anyone who wants to can enter the KITH2 event, at any time up to a date chosen by the organizer (the date that the knives need to be shipped by--not a 'registration' date).

2. On a preordained date (say, February 10th, for giggles), everyone need to have shipped their knife to a neutral third party (or maybe the keeper of the website--who could maybe take a pic or two of each blade?), who will conduct a blind drawing, and then ship the knives, COD, to their individual recipients. I kinda doubt that we'll have a problem finding someone willing to hold all of these purty knives for a little while, until the shipping date!

3. Everyone receives their knife, and evaluates it. Then, by another preordained date (again, for the sake of argument, let's say March 20th), they write up a short review and send it to the keeper of the website, if there is one, this year. Otherwise, they send to the organizer, and he forwards them to the individual makers.

While this does effectively double the post on each knife, it would eliminate the possibility of anyone getting the shaft at the exchange. Also, it would open up the possibility of a fast maker coming up with something in the 11th hour (there are some of you freaks who can turn out a beautiful finished product in a couple of days, and trust me, I hate you :p), or for a slower maker who finds themself swamped with other stuff to pull out without undue embarassment. This will also ensure that everyone should receive their knives within a week or so of the date, since that seemed to be sort of helter-skelter last year. Some folks shipped well before the due date, while others (err...blush) shipped well, after. :o

The downsides to this are, of course, that no one will know who or how many people participated in the KITH2 event until after all the knives are done and sent, but that's minor, and could be remedied with an email to the organizer when you ship off your knife. The other is that someone will holding an awful lot of knives, and I know that this would require a WHOLE lot of trust in your fellow man. Again, while I'd trust pretty much any of you guys to hold onto my knife, I know it's a lot to ask...

Just a thought.

Kal if you wanna do all that count me out. remeber how long it took to do the infamous pass around bowie. I probably won't live that long:D :D :D
